Germans in the Poorhouse - and an interesting selection of German newspapers' comments

Markus Germany.jpg Last week a report about poverty in Germany was released. This report started a big and important discussion about the "underclass" in Germany, which hasn't existed yet but now unfortunately exists. Many important newspapers and magazines in Germany were discussing this important society topic.

France: a principle - the right of asylum

Lucie-France.jpg Here is the story of a Romanian who had to escape from his own country because he had been a victim of an injustice. He was thought to be a member of the mafia by Romania's economic police.

Press Freedom in China

Ella-Uk.jpg From the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's English language newspaper, here is an article on press freedom in China which is itself an example of how much Hong Kong differs from the mainland. It also illustrates the Chinese government's control over the presentation of history, as well as the media.

Should Japan Go Nuclear?

Misuzu-Japan.jpg For these past few decades, Japan has maintained its three non-nuclear principles of not producing, possessing, and not introducing nuclear weapons into the country. I strongly believe that Japan should never go nuclear because it is the only country that has had a tragic experience of being attacked by atomic bombs, and we should be proud that our country has never kept nuclear weapons in Japan. So we should keep our non-nuclear principals and oppose the nuclear race within the international community and make people understand that nuclear weapons bring only tragedy similar to what happened in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Former President Vaclav Havel

Jan.jpg Vaclav Havel was one of the most important – if not the most important – figure in the fight against communism and liberating central European countries at the end of the 80s. I decided to inform you about his birthday and include a link, which briefly introduces Vaclav Havel. This link also provides a few other links with details, because I think every person seeking a liberal education should know Havel’s name and have some idea about what he has done.

The Oil Prices Dilemma

John.jpg The price of oil has recently declined by more than 25%, and ideally this should reflect on consumer prices. However, oil traders in Kenya are still charging prices set during peak prices. The government has requested oil traders to reflect the drop in oil prices on the prices consumers are charged. However, there is widespread reluctance to reduce prices. As a result, the civil society in Kenya is threatening to marshall mass action to demonstrate against the government's perceived reluctance to come to consumers' aid. It remains to be seen how this will resolve.

Mau Mau veterans to sue Britain over torture and illegal killings in Kenya

Ella-Uk.jpg There is very little discussion in the UK about Britain’s colonial past. Every so often, a story like this will emerge which highlights how much remains unresolved and how disinterested the UK is in even acknowledging its responsibility. The British High Commission’s grounds for defence reveals a great deal about the British Government’s attitude towards the issue.

The Swedish election

Josefin-Sweden.jpg A couple of weeks ago there was a governmental election in Sweden. There are elections every fourth year and the Social Democrat Party have been in power for a really long time and are always expected to win. But this election meant a change. The winners were a coalition with the Moderate party as the biggest of four parties, and means a shift in Swedish politics from the left to a more moderate or rightwing agenda.

Abe, Bush vow to take “decisive action” against North Korea

Misuzu-Japan.jpg Japan has been threatened immediate and stern measure over North Korea test, although the Prime Minister, Abe, had taken over post Koizumi. However, I think the issue will stay for long andwon't be solved until Japan roots a fundamentally warm relationship in entire Asian countries.

Lake Issyk-Kul!!!

Dmitriy.jpg One of the beauties of Kyrgyzstan is the Lake Issyk-Kul. It is a gorgeous lake, it is very popular, but due to its location, it does not attract as many tourists as it could. The suggestions in this article reveal some possible ways to solve this problem, which will make the lake Issyk-Kul the center attention of the country. It will increase and improve tourism for the country as well as its economy, which would not hurt the country.

News: by hazard or on purpose?

Lucie-France.jpg This article deals with the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior, the Greenpeace vessel, which took place in 1985 in New Zealand. Two French government agents had been found guilty for the July 1985 bombing. Two decades after, New Zealander Police said that they would re-examine files after Gérard Royal, a brother of the French presidential aspirant Ségolène Royal, was identified as one of the bombers. I chose this article for the reason that it is interesting to notice how mass media use restricted information they can get. In this case, the matter for them is not the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior nor the fact that they found another culpable involved in the sabotage of that vessel.

News selection from Ukraine

Natalia-Ukraine.jpg Hello!
The word "news" itself seems to be very political, at least for me and, I believe, for many Ukrainians as well. Two years ago we had presidental elections (3 rounds!) and Orange Revolution. And in spring 2006 we had parliamentary elections. There are still a lot of arguments about how the country should be governed and what politicians should do. As George Burns put it "Too bad all the people who know how to run this country are busy running taxicabs or cutting hair". It is very true to the situation in my country today=) Everyone has his own opinion about what should be done=)

Tradiciones en Oaxaca

Mariana-Mexico.jpg Despite of all the social and politicial problems that Oaxaca is facing nowadays, the traditions are still being preserved and people are getting ready to celebrate one of the most important traditions in the year "El Dia de los Muertos" (the day of the Dead). Even though the Dia de Muertos celebration takes place during the first two days in November, from this point on you can feel that "air" of the Muertos. Actually for me, everytime I go to the cemetery during this time of the year I experience something new. The theme at the cemeteries changes with all the colorful flowers and the dances performed there.

Manchester Bomb

Tori-uk.jpg Hey everybody,

I've chosen the following article because I feel that the Manchester bomb was a major turning point in Manchester's recent history. In my opinion it actually ended up doing the opposite of what the IRA intended, thankfully there were no casualties and it strengthened us as a city and greatly improved the city centre.
