Hi all. As you may have heard, the classroom was vandalized last night! The perpetrators broke a bunch of stuff but were kind enough to place their beer bottles neatly in the wastebasket.
Other than that excitement, it's been a rather quiet morning - several people in here working.
German TV, which was working yesterday, was blank today - so Natalia and I messed around a bit and it is now up and running.

Kelsey's Shift 8-9am
Happy Friday! There was some "excitement" in WLT 21 this morning. We'll see how that goes.
I started filling in the chart for class orientations. If anyone wants to continue with that you can. You just need to cross reference the times that classes came in (on the Lab calendar) with the times classes are offered on the registrar's website....then fill in the date and check them off. 8-P Have fun! I did for what little bit I was working on it.

Hey. Natalia and Kindrichka are having fun with the blog, its pretty funny. I am excited about the party on Saturday. That will be fun. Today I helped in the Lab and enjoyed Natalia's and Kindrichka's company.
Check out this funny link of some old Swedish rock bands. With names like "The Gert Johnnys" you know its good...

dimka's shift
Talked with Natalia and Shahad about World news poster design. worked on language professors, it is now done for those whose pictures we have. It is saved in LLC folder under FACULTY PICS.
Posted by dsemenia at 04:50 PM
Wed 11:30-3:00
Talked with Natalia about Winpitch, the programming seemed a bit sketchy when I tried it out. Helped add comment boxes on the World news, and read through the posts.
Amadou dropped off a video for the French class, and asked that Kelsey take attendance. I put the video on the whiteboard and wrote a note just in case.
Posted by anave at 02:48 PM
Wednesday
a student was in listening to French blackboard audio
Natalia sent out emails publicizing both the first edition of WWN and the second week of the language blogs.
Sidney came in to pick up her cd/dvd(?)
the beautiful list of current language classes is on the table, so eventually we need to look up and mark down which classes have already been in.
To Do List: If anyone can look at the WWN blog and figure out how to make it accept comments (and how to make the comments link show up on the page!) that would be fantastic and I would give you a kiss on the cheek.

Hey everyone. Today was a great day. I worked on some blog updates and finished the Russian blog. Other than that, I fielded general questions and helped with everything and nothing in particular. I forgot something else that I was going to say. Oh and my birthday is November 2nd.

Beyza and I had a pretty quiet shift. We accidentally locked Natalia out, and a couple of students came by to use the computers.
I made a chart with all the language classes, that we can fill in as they come in for orientations. 8-)
Now, Natalia wants to make a list of everyone's birthdays. So, you should all post your birthday on the blog!!!

Kelsey's Shift 1:30-3:00pm
It was fairly busy in here. There were four or five students who came in to work. Also, Karen was in and out with her tutorees. Conliffe and Amadou both came in as well.
I pretty much spent my shift working on the class orientation checklist. 8-)

Today I covered Kindrichka's shift and uploaded vista mp3 audio files to blackboard. Maria Blanco came in and wanted her dvd's of the office and that 70's show. We don't have a copy because any computer that we tried to copy them on didn't work. Weird disks or something. Have a nice day

PCTV on the computers is very pixellated on all channels. Why? Why, I ask you, why?
Also, the german channel (54) is not working, so Natalia and I messed around with the receivers upstairs and it turns out the guy has to come back and fix it for us.
When we reimaged the computers, Korrektor got lost so we reinstalled it on computer F and may add it to a couple of others.
Figured out entries and pics for WWN.
Connected a mic to computer N. The remaining one needs to be connected to K (plug it into the pink hole!)

A girl came in trying to get to some audio files for Russian. They weren't the ones on blackboard, and they weren't the ones on the other CD we have, but the might be the ones on the CD she has at home... Natalia will talk to Prof. Conliffe at some point and figure this out so we know how to help people next time.
Another girl couldn't use her IM program because it was out-of-date, and only an administrator can update it. We will talk with WITS to find out our position on IM programs, and possibly reserve one computer for them.
Working on WWN stuff to make sure the first issue gets published relatively soon!
Someone came to use Skype on computer N. It worked beautifully.

Kelsey's Shift 8-9
Good Morning ya'll! Happy Friday!
The clipboard is on top of the black cabinet. Whenever you use it, you should make sure to put it back there, so it'll be easy to find for the next person!
For some reason, the DVDs are not being read on Comp. A. We checked The Office on comp D, and comp O and it worked on Wednesday. I am not sure about "that 70s show" though. I tried copying The Office again...but we need a blank disc.

7-9 Thursday
Tried burning the DVDs, but the "that 70s show" disk appears to be blank, and when I tried to burn the Office DVD, an error screen came up and the blank disk I was burning to became finalized with nothing on it, for some reason...Is anyone here good with DVDs? I don't have much experience burning them.
Other than that, a good shift.

Natalia, Jessa and I had a bit of a meeting on Language Blogs. Jessa is going to write the French Blog. As an answer to your questions, Andy, I think that Alex Ford, who also works at the LLC, is going to link the blogs to the new LLC webpage that is currently being created. In the meantime, maybe it would be a good idea to link it temporarily to the old site as well. And yes, we should think of more ways to engage more readers. Any ideas would be welcome.
Also, Florence left her planner in the LLC and will be back to pick it up. It is sitting on the table. And Caroline reserved Walton 21for 9/27 from 7pm to 10pm. I put it in the calender.

Kelsey's Shift 6-9
I came in early to start the video for Fofana's African Film Discourse. I also passed around an attendance sheet for him. 8-P
I installed Roxio Media Creator on Computer O. While I was trying to burn the DVDs for Maria Blanco, the monitor quit working. I checked the connections, and they appear fine, but it still isn't working. I'm not really sure what is going on there? But there was a service request submitted.
Amy, can you take Maria Blanco's discs in to Chris to be copied, please?
Worked on compiling a list of projects we've done...there are lots!

Dimka's shift
Me and Natalia purchased some songs for Spanish department, i worked on Dreamweaver, collected the photos of language professors, but not all of them were available.
Posted by dsemenia at 04:51 PM
11:30-3:00 Wed
Busy day, configured Chinese input on all the computers, and poked around with the web mail language settings.
Maria Blanco (not sure if the spelling is right) wanted some DVDs copied by tomorrow (The office and That 70s show) I didn't know exactly how to do it, so put the DVDs in the cabinet. She also asked about a CD polisher...do we have one?
Tell me more CJ has been installed for all computers, and works as long as you have the CD.
If anyone has some spare time, could they look at sending main via webmail in different languages? To send and receive in Chinese you need to change the display settings (options->display preferences) For some reason you can look at Japanese characters while set to read Chinese, but when set for Japanese some characters were incorrect.
Also had some questions about the language blogs, but I'll put it in the extended entry section...
Is there any way to see how many people visit the blogs? From what I have heard not many people seem too motivated to look at them, and Willamette being a small school we may not be reaching many people. If this turns out to be true, we may want to work the blogs into our site a bit more (perhaps make a webpage on all the technical aspects of learning a language, and then make a separate forum/blog for experiences and questions people may have.)
As if to contradict what I was just writing...someone came in wanting to study French on her own! whoo! Ended up deciding to audit a French class, but still cool.

What's today, Wednesday?
Hallo.
Spent some time looking over the blogs and previewing the world news - looks like a good bunch this year. Tentative blog ideas for this week: delicious, webmail language settings, Willamette abroad, and your own personal choice!
Explored the Tell Me More German program. On the way I encountered more sound problems with computer O... it can't detect any sound devices, and "the sound card may be in use". Any thoughts?
Between Andy, Natalia and I we are trying to figure out Chinese webmail use. Still working on it. Not all the computers are set up to display PRC Chinese - although it is installed - so that needs to be changed through the control panel.
Also, a party for all the language faculty may be in the works.

9/17 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
This week: Closing Procedures
1. Close all outside doors to the lab.
2. Post information about your shift on the LLC blog
3. Shut down all lab computers (if you are closing for the night)
4. Straighten the lab, and wash dishes
5. Close and lock all windows
6. Retrieve key and faceplate from the pink basket in the cabinet
7. Close and lock the door between Walton 21 and the lab (this door and the main door must be closed before setting the alarm), then turn out the lights, and set the alarm in the computer lab before leaving.
8. Leave the lab, lock the door with the key, and return key to the box on the front of the door with the faceplate secured over it.
As for my shift...I fixed the links to the Wlt 21 sched and the Lab sched. I also made some small edits to the language blogs. Those are awesome guys! Great work!

Missing Keys...
Chris, a non-trad student of Chinese is missing his keys. We looked for them in the LLC. He might of left them in another classroom. If anybody finds keys near computer B or C then that is awesome. If not, he thinks he lost them in another place. I talked to Mr.Bush and Homeland Security--the threat level is green. (Don't worry) ;)

We are very low on coffee, so if anyone happens to be going to the store today perhaps they can volunteer to get some? Also, pizza in the viewing room.

This very eventful shift started out with a fire drill! Scared the living daylights out of me but fortunately there was no fire. For a while I was standing outside wondering our new coffeepot had inadvertently started one.
The water guy delivered water. Nice guy!
At 10:30 Maria Delgado came in with her 3rd semester Spanish class. I was not aware that she would be here, but we are flexible so together we introduced the students to the LLC, our website, and Atajo. She will also be here at 11:30 and 1:50, so I added those to the gmail schedule.
Then when the students were working on the computers, about half of them suddenly shut off - D and E, and the entire window side of the room. Turned out it was the circuit breaker, but the wonderful WITS people fixed it in a wink.
Posted first blog entry. Any idea how we can make the link to the extended entry say something other than "continue reading (name of entry)"? I would love any feedback or critique!

Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm
Going on 37 hours! That is not a good thing...I am not proud. I want sleep. In the meantime, however, this is what I've been up to:
I added the staff schedule to the LLC page. The link is:
http://willamette.edu/wits/llc/schedules/LLCschedule.htm
Please check your schedule and make sure that you are not missing your shifts. It is very important that if you are going to be unable to make it (and have a good reason for the absence), you find someone to cover your shift. This calendar does not have shift covers listed on it. That is an option, however, and I will talk about that at the training tomorrow. If everyone is interested in doing that, I will explain how it is done.
I am also going to start posting/emailing weekly tidbits from our Lab Assistant's Manual. There are a lot of really handy (and crucial) factoids about making the LLC run smoothly in there.
Also, Florence and 3 French students were in WLT 21 for a French movie night. Yay!!

Spent quite a bit of time looking over, under and through Sakai (now named "Scholar" for Willamette). This is a replacement for blackboard that will probably be implemented either next semester or next year. It is free, while blackboard is not, and much more flexible - more like a wiki. Some professors this semester are testing it out, and I'm meeting with Joyce Millen later today to go over some stuff.
Caroline, the German TA, came in to discuss movie night next Wednesday - she will be using either classroom 230 or 235, since Amadou will be in 21.
Helped a girl find french audio files on Blackboard.
A professor unknown to me is transcribing VHS audio using the monitor in the corner.

Good Morning Sunshine!
8-9am shift
Just a heads up, please try to clean your dishes after you use them. This morning, I cleaned a coffee mug and a glass out that were left in the LLC. I also had to throw away a container of left-overs that has been in the fridge since we went to breakfast (8-/).
It was pretty quiet...I met with Natalia, had some coffee, contemplated the universe...

Thursday evening
My first post!
Campus Safety was walking around when I arrived, apparently an alarm went off somewhere in Smullin, everything seemed ok though.
I played around with the Japanese version of the tell me more software, it looked like it would be a very useful tool. (I'd like to try the chinese one next)
Natalia checked in and added me to the language blogs.
Other than that, it was a quiet shift...

Thurs.
A colloquium class borrowed the lab for a library/research introduction, so Natalia and I met and discussed various things including writing the Spanish blog, the Spanish Translation project etc.
Kevin (one of the tech guys) also came in and replaced the problematic audio card on Computer O. He left a list of the Audigy Ports that should probably be filed away somewhere in case we ever need it. The new audio card apparently needed a different instillation disc (I’m not sure exactly what) but the point is that computer will now need to be imaged differently. Not something we need to worry too much about, but in case it ever comes up, now you know. In any event, the audio should be fixed.

Sascha's shift
Hey everybody. Busy and intriguing shift today. Worked with Natalia on the new Russian blog.Coming Soon! Next, we are waiting for Allison Powers to let us access the new LLC Abroad blog to start transferring entries. To answer your question. The reason that we cannot change the site right now is because it isn't under the LLC's access, it is under Centers.
Food for thought:
www.flexcar.com-WU now is teamed up with the popular company.
www.hostelz.com- An awesome sight that has information about all different hostels, rates, and reviews. http://www.isgm.org/music/concertmain.asp- The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. A very interesting website that has excellent classical music podcasts. A gem of beautiful music and art. Check these out!

The language blogs are set up!
I researched some online German resources, including a fantastic German del.icio.us site, and Natalia and I brainstormed topics for the blog.
The Bank has been set up again - if you can contribute some money now and then we can use it to buy milk and coffee. Thanks!

Sascha's shift
L o n g shift today. Tried to rename the BB Nakama audio files and course list for JAPN 131 and 231. Natalia and I collaborated on the upcoming debut of the Russian Blog. Very quiet shift other than that. I am going to start cracking down on students using the LLC's back door for entrance into WLTN 21. GRRR...We're supposed to do that right? Have a beautiful day.

Tuesday AM
Natalia is out this morning, at the dentist. She will be back at approximately noon. Wish her luck!
I checked the french programs in classroom 21 - Correcteur is there, Systeme D is there (although there is no sound - is it supposed to have sound?) and Le Petit Robert is not. Oddly enough, the projector continues projecting even when the buttons on the teaching station indicate that it's off.
A non-trad chinese student was in trying to listen to audio files, but he didn't have a willamette login and password yet so he couldn't get into blackboard.
Looked through our German stuff.

Try to enjoy all those BBQs.
