Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm

I worked with FGR's videos. I was having trouble syncing her hard-drive to ours, though. It stopped in the middle of the transfer and said that it could not finish without deleting files. So, I tried to delete the old files and it says that it is restricted. I'm unsure what to do. If anyone knows what's up with this, please let me know.

Fofana's French Film Discourse class is watching a movie.

A young man came in looking for a VCR on which to watch a Halloween movie....I told him that there are other rooms in Walton with VCRs, but that they lock them.

Please, take a look at the cleaning schedule I posted on the blog (I blieve it was Tuesday?) and make sure that you are doing your scheduled clean-up!!! Thanks! Hope you're all having a Happy Halloween!!!

Dimka's shift

Lucia was working here, then one guy was working on Rosetta Italian, one more girl was working on audio, i think she was listening to some language files on blackboard. Karen forgot her cell phone in the other computer lab, so i helped her to get it.

Posted by dsemenia at 04:33 PM

Wed 11:30-3

Quiet shift, some people came to watch movies in the small viewing room, Scott came to study Spanish.
Worked with HandBrake, I'll talk about it in the extended entry.

HandBrake can be a bit tricky, I'll write down what I did here;

1. After starting HandBrake up and putting the DVD in, click the browse button next to the source menu, and select the folder called VIDEO_TS, it will be under the DVD.
2. Then select the chapters you want to encode; I found it easiest to open the DVD in wmp and play the file I wanted, it will show you what chapter it is on the right-hand side.
3. Select the destination, and choose what file type you want to save it as. I used .avi
4. Then you need to choose your output preferences. I wasn't sure on these, but ended up settling on "H.264" for the encoder (The filesize was bigger than XviD), and "MP3" for the audio encoder. (The computers don't have the codec to play AAC, so the movies won't have any sound if you choose AAC.)
5. Chris suggested changing the "Constant Quality" under the "Video Settings" tab to 100%.
6. Hit "Encode Video," It seems to take around 30-60 minutes to do this, I had to go before it finished so I'm not sure though.

I'm not sure if these are the best settings for editing with Elements, If you need to change something I suggest just encoding a single chapter at first to try it out. (It's a lot quicker)

Just FYI

BOO!!

I am synching FGR's hard drive with the one that we have been using to edit her video project. It is going to take a number of hours, so I am just letting it run on computer N. I will be back in for my shift at 7pm, so please just leave it to finish up. Thanks everyone!

Posted by kherb at 01:23 PM

happy halloween!

Very quiet morning. Ivo was in studying and Maria B-A came came to drop off the dvd for Dmitriy - it's on the whiteboard.

Stay safe tonight, everyone!

Kelsey's Shift 8-9am

Happy Halloween!!! It's a great day for a good costume!

FGR came in and we talked about her video project. She'll be back at 1pm.

Natalia won't be in until 10:30 this morning, just as a heads up. Also, I brought the cleaning supplies in from the booth. I think that we should try to put them under the table with the printer on it....or else just move them to the small viewing room. Any thoughts?

Other than that, nobody came in.

Jan came by and we discussed collaborative efforts for WWN
I had some tea for my irritated throat :(
Whoever is on tomorrow's shift from 1-3, i'd like to note that the viewing room
is reserved for a girl who will drop in at 1pm, so heads up
Natalia left her coffee top thingy here, so none of you vagabonds take it!

Tues 2:30-3:00

Quiet shift, Natalia came in and talked about a few projects coming up.
Also, the google calendars on our website are an hour early, probably because of daylight savings. (The actual gmail calendar is fine though)

Sascha's shift

Hey. Justin came in to work on Arabic Rosetta stone, Mizusu came in to check email, Valentina is in here talking on skype to her friend in Italy, Keeing (the new Chinese professor) was here to ask about playing a Chinese DVD. Turns out that it doesn't work on our DVD player here in the lab, but works on the one in the small viewing room. Kelesy knows some more details and is taking care of the situation. Other than that, it was a quiet shift. I published my Russian blog too. Sweet.

Sascha's AM shift

Quick notes:
The printer jammed bad this morning. After about 15 minutes of fooling with it, I called in backup. Carter came down, (or his twin brother) and we worked on it and got it working. For future refrence, this printer is aging and we need to help it out by fanning the paper BEFORE we put it in the paper drawer. This is a crucial step. Also, I watered the plants in Walton 21. Natalia, the printer needs more toner soon... how do we acquire new toner?

Posted by aschilba at 10:08 AM

Kelsey's Shift 8-9:30am

Another Spanish Translation group came in for an introduction to the Dubbing project (the first group came in Sunday night). I am assigning each group to an external hard drive, which are stored in on of the plastic boxes under computer A. If any groups come in asking for their drives, please make sure they grab a cord with a USB end to connect to the computer and a power source cord that connects to an outlet.

10/29 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits

G. Correspondence
Communicate:
1. At the beginning of each shift, make sure to check the LLC blog and your email. These are the most important means of communication between co-workers, management and Willamette staff.
2. If you are asked to do something during your shift, or asked a specific question, please respond specifically to this in your shift blog (i.e. “I finished installing Atajo 4.0, and it is working on all PCs")
3. At the end of each shift, you are responsible for posting a blog for the LLC staff.
--- This should inform others of special incidents, problems or questions which came up during your shift. Blogs should also let the person after you know if there is something they need to get done and what you accomplished during your shift. Even if this is just to state that the lab was quiet it is important to keep updated on other students’ projects, problems and solutions, and everyday events.
--- Your blog entry should also include the names and projects of individual students who came in to use the lab.
4. The LLC email address is llc@willamette.edu.

Mon AM

The German-Learning Lady was in using Wordchamp. I helped her organize her wordlists. Also Sidney is here, Misuzu was here, Jai is working on a paper, and Kindra is meeting with one of the Spanish dubbing groups to give them a quick tutorial.

I had a dream last night that the LLC had a large heated swimming pool. Also changing rooms.

Note: the times on some, if not all, of the computers are wrong. They are an hour behind - so be warned!

Kelsey's Shift

Francis was in using WordChamp for German.
Ivo stopped by and studied at the table.

I have been working on the weekly tid-bits and I checked out the audio on comp D. The connections look fine. I think Vany might have to take a look...I'm no expert.

Friday

Productivity oozed from the LLC this afternoon. There still seems to be a large problem with the functionality of the webcams. Natalia and I tried lots of things, including reinstalling the software, installing updates and plugging and unplugging cables. We think that the webcams on Computer C and D are now fixed, but now the audio on D is broken. Could someone else take a look and see what they think?

Also, the PIT lab is now reimaged and had Audacity and Adobe. Please send the Spanish Translation people down there to work on their projects.

Posted by at 02:39 PM

It's Friday, I'm in love

Sidney and the Italian girl were here both using Skype. The guy who's going to Ukraine was in using Rosetta stone.
Natalia and Carter and I spent some time trying to set up the online conference call site, but still had some problems with the webcams. In fact, webcam problems seem to occurring all over the lab... Stacy West came in to talk with Natalia as well.

Kindra is here skipping class, a girl with dark hair who comes in a lot is writing a paper using Atajo, the lady with the white hair is using Wordchamp (I helped her make flashcards), and some other girl is doing something else. Sorry to not be more specific but I don't want to hover over their shoulders!

installed Korrektor on computer C. To activate it, open Word, click on the arrow that says "add or remove buttons" along the top bar, go to customize, toolbars, and duden (at the bottom).

I'll let you know if I find a simpler way!

10/22 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits

We have a short but important one this week. 8-)

Language Software Checkout!

A clipboard with a checkout sheet has been added to the software shelf.
When students come in to use the CD based language learning programs, have them fill out this sheet.
Staff should be sure to check off software when it has been returned.

--NOTE: this sheet should be a good resource for blog entries, as it will provide information on who used which programs.

Posted by kherb at 02:22 PM

Monday

Natalia and I helped Miho with blackboard, one student talked on Skype, Karen is tutoring, Misuzu was working on something, another student is studying, another student was working on Atajo. Wow, I sound like a stalker...

The PIT lab will soon (Friday?) be re-imaged to include Adobe Premiere and Audacity so when Spanish Translation people start showing up they can use that room for recording.

Posted by kherb at 01:27 PM

mon am

Jan came in for a textbook and some stuff that he had left in the viewing room.
The guy who is going to the Ukraine came in to use Russian Rosetta Stone, but was having problems with the sound on Computer O - so we'll have to check that out yet again.
Wrote my language blog entry and researched German podcasts.
Tried to figure out why the NITLE classroom won't work (this is a program that our French professor abroad is using to set up a meeting with the French TAs). Apparently there's a problem with a JNLP file? Tried to install the latest version of Java to see if that would help but didn't due to lack of administrative privileges.

I sent out an email suggesting that we record who is in the LLC and what programs they are using. Thus, today: Italian skype session, Justin learning Arabic with Rosetta stone, the guy who is going to the Ukraine using Russian rosetta stone, and two or three people printing stuff out.

10/15 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits

E. Satellite Recordings
In the Language Lab, we receive international broadcasts. From these channels, we record news and entertainment programs from around the world. These programs are used for classroom and entertainment. These can be recorded onto VHS using one of the stations in the lab or the small room, or they can be downloaded via PCTV on any computer in the lab. The following are instructions on doing this.

Setting the VCRs in the LLC and Walton 21:
1. Use the remote control for the correct VCR.
2. Press program/check button once: you should be in a screen where the channel, date, time on, and time off are selected
3. Select the appropriate channel with the CH up and down arrows, the channels are listed on the sheet taped to the station
4. Next, select the date for individual recordings choose the appropriate date
5. Select time on in military time (and make sure it is Pacific Time); for example 3pm is 15:00 in military time. Please allow 5 minutes of leeway, for example if recording starts at 5:30 pm select 17:25 as the start time 6. Select time off, similarly to the start time: military time and leeway.
For example, if end time is 6pm, select 18:05 as the off time.
7. Press Timer Rec button to save the setting.
8. Press menu button to go to the main page.
9. To check your set ups press the program/check button twice

To program the VCR in The Room:
1. on the VCR remote control, press “Input Sel.” to get to a blue screen. Then press “Menu.”
2. the menu screen has different categories listed on the left. with the arrow button, click down to “Prog,” and on the screen that comes up, click on “Standard.
3. on this screen, set the program channel, day, and time for the show you want to record.
4. Now, press “return” on the remote, and the television will tell you to turn off the VCR. Don’t worry, go ahead and do it; the VCR will take care itself. I was worried too, at first, but it worked out fine.

Recording from PCTV:
1. Open PCTV on one of the PCs in the lab
2. Select the appropriate channel
3. Select the Record button (the small red dot on the bottom menu) 4. When the program is done recording, select record again to end the recording.
5. When recording has ended, the Gallery should open (if it does not, select the button with five boxes on it--it is two to the right of the record button)
6. You can either view the clip on this computer, or you can burn it to VCD or DVD
7. To burn, simply select the media type you are working with and the "Burn" button

Posted by kherb at 02:39 PM

Kelsey's Morning shift

I added the new software to the inventory and printed it. It is on the table by the printer. If you want to organize the language software and arrange the boxes, go right ahead.

Prof. Courtin-Schreiner, a French professor, should be coming in sometime to pick up a video that we recorded for her. It is sitting on the sill of the white board next to big letters explaining its purpose. Natalia and I published week 4 of the blogs! Well done, everyone, well done. Carter from WITS was in and plans to re-image the lab to correct a nasty virus that we contracted somehow that has left much of the lab disabled. Surprisingly, computer K was unaffected...very suspicious... Hopefully that will work out.

Also Arabic Justin was here, and Karen to use English software, and a couple of other people.
New idea: In your blog entries, see if you can make a quick note of which students were in here, and what they are doing. This will help us get a better idea of what the LLC is used for during different times of day.

Friday 1-3

Talked with Nick about the collegian article, that should turn out well. Misuzu scheduled some times for Japanese tutoring next week, I put it in the lab schedule.

Do we have any bigger Spanish dictionaries, or plan to get more dictionaries in general? Someone studying Spanish asked.

Friday!!

This is a little late, but entry for my shift Friday morning:
It was busy! Caroline, the German TA, came in and asked me to help her set up a WordChamp class account for both first and second year German. We worked on that and set up one that she and I and prof. Maurer could all access. Then later Fr Maurer came down and I taught her how to use the program herself.
I put a bunch of stuff on the new shelf and generally tidied things up a bit - feel free to move things in the cabinet if you don't like how I've put it. Also we have a first aid kit on the bottom shelf, just for future reference.
Finally, an ancient hebrew class came in to look at our resources and I think many of them were surprised and pleased to see some of the programs we have. I discovered that wordchamp can type in Hebrew so I think they will be using it quite a bit!
Have a great weekend, all.

Friday

The 2nd Edition of the WU World News is now published! Also, Nick from the Collegian came in to interview Natalia and Amy. Look for an article soon!

Kelsey's Shift 8-9am

I fixed the dates on the World News blog. The picture still needs to be added to Rebecca's blog, however. It is saved in the 2649 folder on the LLC server. If somebody could get that done soon, that'd be awesome!

Also, please remember to shut down computers at night. It gets really hot in this room when they're left on with it all closed up. 8-)

Thuesday

Amy! Nick from the Collegian is looking for you! I guess he needs to write his article by the end of the week, and he seems a bit concerned that he won't get a hold of you in time.

Ah yes, and today I spent some time e-mailing for the Spanish Translation Project (students will probably start e-mailing the llc list serve about this, but no need to panic, I will take care of it all). We also talked a bit about the language blogs, I'll sent out an e-mail soon.

Hey, did alot of things today. Alex and I tried to update the WU Abroad names and such but dreamweaver didn't cooperate. Apparently it works only on comp.B. Natalia sent in a work order request form. I think that is it. Have a nice day.

Wednesday morning

Busy morning.

-Justin the Arabic guy was in, working on Rosetta Stone
-We ordered two CD cases for the myriad disks that are in the cabinet
-Vany came in to check the vandalism damage. He also took a look at Computer O and fixed the sound (it was plugged in wrong). Also, some info about computer O: PCTV does NOT play international TV channels. Instead, it is set up so if you put a VHS into the VCR on the cart (middle shelf), the video and audio will play on the PCTV program, channel 3 (marked VCR).

Kelsey's Shift 8-9am

I tried Dreamweaver again on computer A. It says that I need to be running KeyAccess. It works on comp B, though. 8-) So, I added Vicipaedia to the Classics webpage.

This website needs to be added to the German webpage: http://www.ponsline.de/cgi-bin/wb/w.pl

Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm

I transfered the stuff in the cardboard boxes under the desk into the new bins! They look nice, and one is still completely empty. I'm sure we can find something to fill it with. 8-P The cardboard boxes were too big for the recycling , so I left them out. We should have somebody pick them up and recycle them.

I cleaned a bit. And I tried to edit the webpage, but it said I didn't have keyaccess to Dreamweaver...which is strange considering I used it this afternoon.

Monday pm

Hey all.

Wrote the entry for the German blog. As one of the topics is PCTV, I checked it out and discovered that the German station 54 does not work yet again - we'll have to look into this.

Very quiet. No one here this evening. However, this morning a law student came in to use our Arabic Rosetta Stone software. Hooray!

I've been testing out the Tell Me More software in both German and Japanese - still not totally impressed but I need to explore a little more, so the verdict isn't out yet. The voice recognition is really cool.

10/1 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits

Once again, I wish you a very happy Monday! It may be cold and soggy outside but it's nice and toasty down here in the LLC! Take that weather gods... Now down to business:

Cleaning the Computer Lab (opening shift, closing shift, and any time it seems needed): 8-)
1. Straighten all the chairs
2. Put away any stray headphones, and gather up items that have been left at computer tables
3. Use cleaning liquid and cloth to wipe down all the tables
4. Do likewise with the computer stations- all around the computers and the desks (you will have to move the computers and keyboards to properly clean around them)
5. Wipe off all computer monitors and wipe off the mice.
6. Check the recycling area for any mess- straighten up
7. Check printer for paper- recycle any stray papers at the print station
8. Clean the windowsill and all of the wooden chairs
