Friday!
A lot of people in and out today, a few groups/people working on Spanish, both dubbing and just studying. Someone working with rosetta stone as well, looked like Italian. looked for a CDA to MP3 converter for a while before realizing that windows media player can rip CDs to WMA, which works with Elements...oops.

at first we (Natalia, Kelsey and i) tried to figure out how to use Roxio to burn DVDs but no "great success" then Kelsey used adobe to burn spanish project. its done. Russian tutor (Katryne) was here helping one student. So the DVD for spanish project is done, i will leave iton the table, if one girl come and asks for it, it is on the table. i also downloaded and installed a dvd burning program on computer O, if anybody wants to try it, that would be nice.
P.S. nevermind, the dvd does not work, i do not know why.

11/26 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
I realize that this is probably review for most if not all of us, however, it is important that we all know and understand how to do this:
Opening the Servers:
1. Login with your Willamette username and password
2. Select MyComputer from the Start Menu
3. If the LLC drive does not appear, you will need to map the network drive:
a. Go to Tools > Map Network Drive
b. Select an empty drive and type \\home\llc into the textbox labeled “folder”
c. Select Finish
d. Enter your Willamette username and password if prompted to do so
This is the main server for the Language Learning Center. It contains all of the folders with faculty and assistant projects, the homepage, and all other program folders. Do NOT delete or rearrange any files on the server without permission. Save any LLC work you do to your personal assistant folder or to the corresponding project folder.
Opening H-drives on PCs:
I. My Computer: this is an option if you are on a computer that is connected to the Willamette University network
- see above for details on how to use this option
II. FTP: this option will allow you to access data on your H-drive from any computer with internet access (keep in mind that while you can download from the H-drive this way, you cannot upload data to the home directory via ftp)
a. Open a web browser
b. Type ftp://username@willamette.edu (where username is your Willamette username) into the address bar and press enter/return
c. You will be prompted for your Willamette password
d. The contents of your home directory will appear as a list of files in the web browser window
e. You can select the files you wish to download (you may be prompted to input your password each time you open a new folder)

Sascha
Tuesday from 9:30-12:30.
Today was a fun day. Busy too. Caroline brought her German class in here for a presentation. That was fun. Now there are four different spainish projects going on. One in the PIT and three in here. They are little busy bees. Kelsey is sitting next to me typing an email. Heiki and I were proofreading a grant proposal for the WU language programs. Finished that, now I am just getting excited to go home for the long weekend. I hope that everyone has a really wonderful time the rest of this week in whatever you do. Be safe too, and be happy.

Tuesday morning
First thing in the morning, even before I figured out how to open the lab, Caroline arrived, said she will have a class here and wanted to hook up her laptop to the projector. Never got the sound to work, Sascha took care of that later (I think). Then helped a Spanish student who had some trouble with dubbing. Spent time on merging and editing several drafts of a grant proposal (with Sascha).

Kelsey's Shift
I was at the WITS help desk for all of my shift. I took FGR's external hard drive up there, and they formatted it for me. So, hopefully, it will let me add the files from our hard drive.
I also scanned some articles for professor Nickbakht. His originals are in a large manila envelope that I put in the black cabinet. So, if he comes by to pick them up, that's where they'll be. 8-) Thanks.

11/19 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
Answering the Phone/Taking Messages/Voicemail
The LLC assistant on duty is responsible for answering each incoming phone call professionally. A good model to follow is “Language Learning Center, this is (your name). How may I help you?” Answer all messages responsibly, writing down any names, requests, or phone numbers. If the caller has questions that you are unable to answer, that pertain to the LLC, refer him/her to Natalia. If the caller has questions that do not pertain to the LLC, do your best to help and provide him/her with the number of the main Willamette switchboard, 503-370-6300.
The phone does not light up when there is a message in voicemail, so the morning shift should always check for messages when starting your shift. To listen to messages, one needs to dial the code 3370 and for the mailbox and password enter 5492# for both. Then one simply follows the instructions given. The message phone codes are written on the telephone in the office for your convenience.
Using Proofing Tools:
It is likely that, as an assistant in the LLC, you will be asked to help with using word processing proofing tools.
To use Proofing tools in other languages in Word, you have a couple of options. First, if the language is supported by the Office XP language pack, you can select the language you wish to write in from the language menu in the toolbar on the bottom right of the screen. If the language is not supported here, there is another option. After the text is written and you need to spell check your document, go to the edit menu and “select all.” This will highlight all of the written text. Then go to the tools menu and scroll down to the language setting > a submenu should appear to the side > then click the “set language” function > a menu of different languages should then be available > select the language you wish to type in. When you are ready to spell check your document, highlight the portion you wish to check with the mouse, then either click on the “ABC” icon, or go into the tools menu and click on “spelling and grammar.”

Happy Monday
Hey all. Email me back if you are interested in Secret Santa.
Quiet morning to start out with, then lots of people came in!
One girl was looking to practice Audacity this morning, and will be back later to do the actual recording for her tv episode. Whoever's working might want to put her in the pit room. Also, does anyone know what happened to the overview document for the spanish dubbing project? I couldn't find it on the llc drive.
Otherwise, some Russian students were in, and Wailana is typing something, and another girl came in wanting to borrow a French book that we don't have.
We have new headsets that will be helpful for skyping people! They are in a box under computer A.

Tried to help Prof. Montero with playing a video in the classroom and failed miserably. Natalia came to the rescue to show me the painfully obvious input button on the DVD player remote that switches between VHS and DVD modes. There is also something going on with the VHS capabilities in the LLC. I think the cables were scattered when we were digitalizing and I don't know how to reconstruct the thing. I think we will contact Vanny.

Monday Mid Morn
Jai, and two women are in working on papers, wikipedia, and other homework.
Natalia is having a rambunctious conversation with Gaetano over Skype.
The on-line conversation preparation seems to be going well. I am trying to use Handbrake to secure copies of episodes for the Spanish Trans. people.
Danielle was working on her Scrubs S.T. project, she was having some trouble using Audacity, the computer wasn't recognizing the lane encoder.
To fix this problem follow the steps in the extended entry...
To locate the lame encoder for Audacity
1. prompt the computer to look for lame_enc by attempting to export an audio file as mp3
2. When a box pops up asking you to locate lame_enc, browse for it under the C drive, program files, Audacity, Lame
3. Select lame_enc and click OK
4. Thats all. Oh, and if the file doesn't exist you will need to download it or ask WITS to download it for you.
Hopefully this won't be a problem as Lucia and I went through these steps on all the computers in the PIT lab, but if it is, you know what to do...

Friday
Hey, all.
Izzy, the Chinese teacher, came in because there was some sort of mess with scheduling and she didn't have a place to watch a movie, so we squeezed all fifteen of her students in the viewing room for their 10:20 class.
The german learning lady is here, and another girl is working on Atajo.
Happy birthday, Sascha!

Thursday
Lucia and I are in the process of ripping the Scrubs episode on Computer E. It is still going, so please just leave that computer alone for now. Lucia also made herself a namecard, which is saved in the Namecard folder on the llc h drive and is ready to be printed whenever. I also have some video stuff downloading on Computer F.

Sascha's shift
Hey everybody,
Today was productive to say the least. Alex and I uploaded as much of the new WU Abroad information as possible. Ask me if you would like to know more...
Valentina was here, Mizuzu, The woman working on German, Kindra, and Lucia, and Alex. It was a productive day. But nothing much to report.
Happy Birthday to Amy!
