Thursday evening
First of all, I want to say that my world news news is not published :( should I change something? ... anyway. Today it has been quite quiet . Mamoru, Heiki and other people came to watch the japanese movie. I worked on the atajo project. The lamps are very cool! well done :) I would just say, let's keep the lights of most of them off when we are not using them... is that possible (not all of them because it would be extremely dark... but most... so that we are energy efficient ! ) ok... have a great weekend, chao :)

Howie's 5:00 to 7:00
Jacob finished fixing the LLC blog and gave Andy and Zhanna a tutorial on how to update the World News blog. Several people were working in the lab around 5 PM. Natalia is really ready for News Orlean. In case I don't see you tomorrow, have a blast Natalia!

hi i fixed yr blog
The Willamette World News blog is now working as intended. The key was to change Preferred Archive Type under Publishing Settings from "Category" to "Individual."
ALSO: Andy and Zhanna now know everything there is to know about updating the website ;-)

Thursday afternoon
Fun day - as you can probably see, we got the New and Improved lamps all set up, complete with bulbs. It looks just great, so the rule is no more florescent lights, ever.
I also copied a book for Natalia, a Japanese student and the visiting Japanese professor are here hanging out, along with Jacob working on WWN.

Sascha's 1230-1400 shift
Today's shift was quiet. No customer came in. Eddie from the physical plant came in though to work on something in the ceiling. Lucia and Beyza were also here. Hope that everybody has a wonderful weekend!

Quiet shift, found Marta's USB drive and put it in the heart-shaped basket.
People started coming in the last 30 minutes of the shift, Beyza, Dimitri, and two guys recording Chinese with audacity.
Sometimes an error comes up when using audacity about the sound input, just go into "tools" and "preferences" then change the input device until it works.

wednesday before focus the nation
Today, Natalya was here finishing working on details before her trip, Beysa was working on her projects, Kindra came around for a little bi. I opened the Rosetta Stone for Latin and I did the whole first exercise for the 1rst level "puer et scapha, Puella sub pila, vir et femina, vir in mensa, elephantus et canis, puella et felles" are things that I learnt, I recommend you to check your favorite one. We need to put the Latin c.d. somewhere in the black cd folder, sorry, I don't know what is the procedure, can someone tell me how to do it? or do it? I will put the Latin cd back in the Rosetta Box. By the way the new headphones are super good.

Sascha's long long long shift
Today's shift was the craziest shift I've had. I did alot of things and now need to have some bloodsugar. Heiki, I saved the correct program to the desktop. I didn't use the ones that you had because there was no audio to go with the video. Let's talk about it. I talked to Kris Lou and he didn't seem to concerned about the timeframe. OK I think that is all. I helped a Spainish professor with the scanner in the MMWR and wow that took a really long and involved time. Anyway have a good shift.

Wed.........
Worked a bit more on the draft e-mail for the Abroad Talk with Heiki. We now need to coordinate technology with persuasive argument and get this thing off the ground. Also worked with Natalia about the Language blogs, I'll try so send out the suggestions for that to the right people soon.

The days are getting longer... how exciting! Today, a Spanish student came and she wanted to correct a paper, I showed her ATAJO and Natalya showed her the way to correct Spanish Grammar in Word. I sent an email to Professor Maria Delgado to ask her about the info to put in Atajo. I also wrote my first blog. Heiki, and other spanish student came around. Buenas noches!

Sascha's shift
Today was a busy and productive day. Elizabeth, Beyza, Sydney, Ana, guys working on Russian RS, Lucia, Jacob, Misuzu. These were some of the many faces that graced the LLC today. I helped this guy with skype and mixxer. Kelsey, I think that on Monday morning someone should print out a hard copy of google calender for the LLC lab schedule and tape it to the door to WLTN 21. That way, it is out and about if people need it. Just a thought. Also, there is a birthday card for Raution that needs to be signed by everybody... it is located in the black cabinet by the pink heart key holder.

Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm
It was a fairly busy shift for the evening. Two students came in for help with audacity, two came in to use Atajo; Lucia was in working on various projects; Howie stayed late to work on the video project; Sascha was hanging out in WLT21; and I fixed up the schedule and worked on the faculty xls.
All in all, it was a very pleasant shift. I just discovered that captivate is not on any of our computers. If it is at all possible, can someone download it to comp A in the morning (you will need Natalia as the admin on this one). Thanks, and Happy Friday!

Sascha's shift
Today was a busy shift. I helped Elizabeth organize her Skype and Mixxer contacts. She knows how to use Skype now and also has all of her contacts loaded onto her account. Then I gave her a tutorial about Skype's basic functions and buttons. (Laugh Zhanna laugh...) Beyza and I checked Montag den big screen tv for a certain satellite channel. They didn't have it and that is all she wrote for that. Just a hint, when there is nobody in WLTN 21 it is really pleasant to open the door. This lowers the temperature of the crucible that we call the LLC.

Wednesday
A nice shift after tasty pizza and helpful training.
Caroline came in and we discussed options with Wordchamp for the two German classes - decided to set up a class for the first year students and let the second year students have independent accounts.
Misuzu was here for a movie night so I showed her how to make microwave popcorn.
I got the Japanese movie out of 21 and it is in the black cabinet.
Posted by at 09:20 PM
Wednesday shift
There was training going on. I uploaded the minutes on the training. I started designing the campaign for attracting "Independent Learners" to the LLC.
Nos vemos pronto!
Posted by lnorrisc at 09:18 PM
Training
Training of Wednesday: If you want to read what I could get about our Training please read more...
Some of the ideas:
Learn how to work the projector
Make sure to know the opening and closing procedures for the LLC
Namecards for some people have to be made
Explore the new website in order to know what is there (Schedules for example)
Everyone should: learn a language with Rosetta or Tell me more and open a Skype account.
Write your shift on the blog and read all the shifts from your last one.
Ok... hope the document is understandable! Everytime you read "I" it means "Natalya ". Iit was great to share some learning and pizza with you guys! chao chao :)
Training LLC: Wednesday 23rd 2008.
How to make sure we project the computer screen?
The remote has a computer, VCR button.
Opening and closing procedures.
Heiki thinks we should put this procedures on the cabinet.
Get the key, come in, and unlock the door in between the LLC and the class.
Sometimes campus safety forgets to open the door to the class so get in the class and prop the door for the student to come.
Then turn on the computers and put the cards.
Namecards for Heiki, Zhanna, Jacob, Sam…
Cleaning schedule
Everyone will have to clean something in their shift.
New website
Jacob did the new website. Updates and training will be held with Jacob. Whoever wants to get trained has to talk to Natalya first. If you are editing first ou have to get in the LLC mapdrive first. Natalya thinks there should be a step by step format on how to do it.
Zan is going to be maintaining the events, and the stuff that Stacey has in the international office. So if someone wants to add an event please tell Zan.
Orientations for classes.
There have been many classes for orientations. It is important that they understand what the LLC has for them. For example, today a Spanish class, we tell them about Willamette abroad and World news and then specific things for them, for example today we showed them “ATAJO”. Mostly is talking about resources in general.
Audacity, and Blackboard, dropbox
LLC Help Desk has the explanation for how to use Audacity. After recording, save the file anywhere and then upload it in blackboard.
There are classes in the LLC, there is a sign on the door
The small viewing room has a sign that says “room is in session”. For example on Wednesday there is a Russian class, then you remind yourself that you shouldn’t get in there.
LLC Internal
There is the schedule for Walton 21, etc. It would be nice that there is a link for the schedule of the small room.
Signs
There is a new sign on top of the door, and there are other signs like the one that says “Room is occupied” in the small viewing room.
There is the bulletin board that is almost complete; Chris is doing a template for all Willamette Abroad and World News people.
There is software for independent learning.
There is a shelf full of independent learning software. We have quite a few people learning by themselves. A guy from law school that is learning Arabic, another that is learning Russian, someone is doing Hebrew, someone Latin. I thought it would be very good to us to learn by ourselves so that we know how it works. On your shifts take a language of your choice on each category.
Categories:
Tell me more.
Rossetta Stone
Check out procedure:
Take the clipboard, sign the name, date and time, and what is the program checked out. Then they bring it back and you check the software in.
We are a service department; I would like to remind you to be aware that you are here to greet people and acknowledge their arrival, turn around and ask them what they need. Please take the headphones off and
Headphones: we have 10 new head sets of USB. We might start to give the independent learners some of this head sets.
It would be good to put the information on how to use it on seedwiki.
Rossetta
Take a look at it and put a document up to explain how it works (Lucia, Amy …)
There are two black folders labeled, put the cd’s back where they came from.
ATAJO SYSTEM
Writing assistant for Spanish, there is a virtual tour in the LLC page under Spanish, Writing and Grammar.
French: Under “references” is the same kind of thing but for French. We should move it to the “Writing and Grammar” thing.
MIXXER
Everyone should make an account. Put the name, email and contact for Skype account on the webpage. Everybody should set up a Skype account. Mixxer is on the web page under additional resources. You sign in. You say when can you come and then you receive an email and then chat.
WORDCHAMP
It is also under “Additional Resources”. You can make your own list of flashcards. All the words have audio.
Please be sensitive to the issue and try to use your time wisely when there is no one to help.
WILLAMETTE ABROAD AND WORLD NEWS
Heiki and Jacob are doing the project of Willamette Abroad. It is organized on the front webpage. There is the bulletin board.
SKYPE AND WEBCAMS
Mixxer and Skype will be connected. The new webcams have microphones
Cameras are plugged in front.
Walton 21
Problems next door: Projector, Computers, Audio, Combination, DVD doesn’t work. How do we deal with the situation? You check the most important things, 5 minutes max. Nothing works. Magic number Front office across from the Computer Lab: # 6004, front office upstairs.
The first things to check:
Projector: 2 major buttons: red one at the side for things to show on the screen.
Sound: another button at the bottom of the unit of the teaching station piece.
If a person is showing a DVD. The button on the teaching station should say DVD.
Schedules
They are on the front page
Assistants
Walton 21 (internal)
LLC Lab (index page)
Jacob is going to add “Viewing room”
Faculty approaching to you
You can take the materials, put them to the cabinet and send them all to me. Don’t make any decisions on your own. You can check the lab, tell them it is looking good and then tell me.
We are service people, it is a very demanding occupation because often you work so hard and people don’t note it.
Introduce yourself first, whoever comes from outside doesn’t feel as comfortable as you feel here. In the blog put the name of the professor and which department he/she comes from. You are in the position to host and to welcome.
"Everybody at some point in life should work as a waitress…" we are not serving coffee… but it is a good skill to develop to be patient. The different temperaments, cultures, languages, will be a good preparation for life.
Blog entries:
It is a must. And also to read everything that happened from your last shift to your shift.
If someone can't come, they should let Natalya know on her cell phone or email with enough anticipation.

Re: Kelsey's suggestions earlier, I originally removed sidebar links from the Abroad page at Heiki's suggestion so I suppose the three of us should agree on something. The World News page is on MovableType so I have no control over the sidebar links there. I did change the students-abroad list as per the memo from Stacy. The list of blogs that don't (yet ;-) ) exist and hence to gray out is updated automatically; llc/abroad/students.txt is the abroad list updated manually and pretty straightforward to edit. cheers

sorry that this is late. I helped Raution and Howie get started with the FGR project. We had a lot of issues with DVD burning, but we are much closer than when we started. That's good, right?
Also, a couple of ladies from FGR's French class came in for Audacity tutorials and one stayed to do her recording. Other than that, Lucia was my only visitor (she brought delicious cookies!).

Monday evening (oops, and saturday)
What happened on Saturday: the Russian lady (I asked her her name again, and I forgot it again) came in to watch a vhs in the viewing room. Beyza came in and we talked about movies.
What happened tonight: Misuzu & Co. were here tutoring a couple of students. Lucia was in and out. Natalia called: if anyone saw a small brown book titled "West to East" or something like that, please let her know. I had to leave at 8:30 and Jacob was supposed to cover for me, but it didn't happen so I just closed early.

And Natalia asks to remind everybody to unlock Walton 21 in the mornings!

Too much background noise so she used the PIT room. Lucia is applying for an internship at the capitol, so I took a look at her cover letter. Helped a transfer Russian student look for some simple grammar info to print out but he will go buy a laminated thing at the bookstore instead. Natalia and I took down the ugly paper on the bulletin boards in the stairway to W21 and rearranged some posters, then put up our new foam sign above the door. It may be best to organize these so they lead back to what it stands for. (the willamette abroad leads to willamette abroad)

Talked with Heiki and Jacob about organizing the LLC website. Also, a student (Renee) came in, told us she liked the LLC's chatty atmosphere and offered to send us updates on muysical/cultural events that are going on in Salem (see recent e-mail) which we hope to incorporate into our blogs.

Kelsey's Shift
Hey, sorry about not updating this. On monday during my shift, I worked on some schedule touch-ups....and did the same thing today. I also helped Genna with Audacity. There were a few people in the lab during the shift, mostly LLC staff, actually. 8-)

second shift..of the day
-added a couple of events to the website events blog from the willamette events calendar. i was thinking that putting them up there on a month by month basis makes the most sense..
-started updating the current courses...once i figured out how to use dreamweaver and connect up to the new site, it worked (updated french, german and russian, I'll leave the printed out schedules near the main computer), but later when I checked again, it was back to the old courses...not sure why it wasn't updating correctly. Someone enlighten me...
-oh and i made coffee if anyone wants some

Tuesday
Spent some time looking at desk lamps for the LLC to mediate a light use compromise in the lab. Here are some links if you would like to add your input.

Natalia was in the lab interviewing Natalie, a candidate for the German professor opening. I helped Elizabeth with her Blackboard account.

Welcome back, all!
Hey kids. Hope your vacation was joy-filled and restful, complete with good food. Mine sure was.
Quiet evening here in the LLC, Misuzu was here tutoring and we updated her times on the lab schedule. BTW a million congratulations on the new LLC site, looks bloody fantastic. I am totally impressed.
There are some lovely new laminated signs with the updated LLC hours that have been posted in various places around the lab and W21. Assignment for someone tomorrow: could you go up to the dean's office and ask permission to place the one remaining sign (on the table) (and more signs, once and if we print them) on the public bulletin boards upstairs? Most flyers can only go up for a limited time so we will have to get special permission to post them there indefinitely. We may have to beg for this privilege, I'm not sure.
