Watched a Chinese movie with the Chinese 2 class, then set up a Russian movie. Learned more about Dreamweaver with Jacob

Kelsey's Shift

Today was fairly exciting. A Japanese class came in to watch a video (just fyi: when using the projector, make sure that both of the cords are plugged into the back of the headphone director at station A, and that nothing is plugged into the front. Otherwise, the sound won't work properly).

In other news, Chris dropped off the namecards for Raution, Howie, Heiki, and Jessa!!!

Checked out Live Mocha, a cool site that Amy found for language learning. It is Mixxer-esk, but with a pleasant slice of independent learning. The language blogs look wonderful, everyone, the announcement e-mail will be sent out soon.

sunny wednesday

This sunny Wednesday... Zhanna and I met and talked about the Independent learner, she will be designing the webpage and I will keep on adding the information. I also watered the plants that were so thirsty and kept on developing the independent learner info. The intro is done, the Spanish link is done, I started the French. At some point I will need the help of the language specialists to go over the links to see if it is OK :)

Wednesday pm

Hey all,

I wrote my German blog about the comic making site and Google Earth.

Japanese class never showed up in Walton 21 today - their class must have been cancelled.

Checked out the reservation for Zan's philosophy club meeting. We don't have a separate google calendar for Walton 21, so I put the event in the llc calendar with a note that it's happening in 21.

Discovered with Natalia that a short video that plays through MBA's Spanish Comp and Discussion Class will open with realtime, but ONLY when the computer is logged in as administrator. They're coming in tomorrow morning at 8:30 for an orientation, so we'll have to log in all the computers as administrator and fix the problem afterward.

Sascha's wednesday shift

Today was a productive shift. I worked on the language blog and the study abroad blog. I helped some people here in the lab. I also almost made Martichka and Natalia cry for joy when I told them about a special website. www.kayak.com This website is amazing and I'm not going to tell you what it has to do with, just check it out.

Posted by aschilba at 03:52 PM

Worked on updating Best of Abroad.

There's a Gurdjieff quote after the leap.

In the life of an ordinary man truth and falsehood have no moral value of any kind because a man can never keep to one single truth. His truth changes. If for a certain time it does not change, it is simply because it is kept by 'buffers.' And a man can never tell the truth. Sometimes 'it tells' the truth, sometimes 'it tells' a lie. Consequently his truth and his falsehood have no value; neither of them depends upon him, both of them depend upon accident. And this is equally true when applied to man's words, to his thoughts, feelings, and to his conceptions of truth and falsehood.

In order to understand the interrelation of truth to falsehood in life a man must understand falsehood in himself, the constant incessant lies he tells to himself.

It seems that the bulletin board at the small room is going to serve the same purpose - a placeholder for the small brilliant things - as the whiteboard at the lab. I printed out the two poems and some others, so they will be a start once we get some pins.

Otherwise, a number of people, both employees and users came by. Sascha brought his brother to tour the place. Amazing exchanges with Natalia and Kindra. And I like reading poetry.

Question - does anyone know how to change the styles/colors of Willamette movabletype blogs? If so please email me. Thanks!

Students from Rosemarie Maurer's class may be coming in to watch movies in the Viewing Room.

Also, on Sunday Bill and I attempted to compromise with Computer A to convince it to stop with the strange amounts of spam/spyware/viruses that seem to think they have found a home there. I'm not sure our attempts were completely successful, but we did find 201 threats in the first minute of our search. Carter is supposed to be coming in soon to take a closer look.

Marta, Elizabeth and Ty were in studying. Wits people came to work on Computer K. I made coffee.

Nine to twelve

Kindra, Lucia, Kelsey and Jacob were here, in various times. Not much happened - well, i ran the Norwegian artist Thomas Dybdahl's tracks from the wall speakers (see extended entry below).

The conversation Kindra referred to in her entry was great. In my mind the issue relates to whether you address people in second person as subjects or in third person as objects. It has been my observation in the past that politeness tends to fuel third-person communication. The rigidity of this statement, however, is crumbling, since I do meet people that are polite and yet truly attentive to you - Kindra herself is a prime example.

Also, since Thetford is cancelled, I would be interested in going to Boon's Treasury later.

Heiki was not of help to a French student, but she thanked him anyway. This spurred an interesting debate between Lucia, Heiki and I on the role and value of politeness. I think we concluded that politeness is necessary and kind in some instances, and creates unnecessary boundaries in others. Please feel free to comment. Also, the New York Times recently published an article on a device that allows you to create your own electricity by simply walking around. Check it out.

Kelsey's Shift

Loftus came in to tell me that the computer in WLT 21 wasn't working, so I turned on the red button. It works now. Maria came in to chat with Jacob for a bit. Misuzu came in for a bit. And a student came in to use language software. Other than that, it was pretty quiet.

Letting go...

I overcame my complexes in what Freud would, aptly, term the 'anal stage,' and managed to let go! The e-mail is 'out'! All my dignity is gone now. Especially since Kindra won.

Also, took the Nachtmagazin file to Kris Lou. We'll see if that works for him -- it seems that burning it as a DVD is a lot of hassle due to way audio is encoded.

Victory

Heiki and I raced to add new authors to the new Abroad Talk blog (I won... muahahahaha) and we also sent the blog announcement e-mail to Stacy West for her OK (which returned affirmative). We are now considering actually sending out the e-mail to the people who will write in said blog. This will be accomplished once Heiki overcomes his fear of "letting go". I hope we can all be supportive of him regarding this sensitive subject.

Sunday

Michal and Heiki brought a movie, Trois Couleurs: Rouge to watch in the classroom. It was quite beautiful, I would highly recommend it. Bill came in for tea. Sascha was in studying.

Saturday afternoon

A maintenance guy and his dog came in to visit me. No students or anything, though. This is always a very dead shift.

Personal request from me: when you turn the computers on and off, please do it on the tower (below the desk!) and not on the monitor (above the desk!). Otherwise mass confusion ensues. Thanks.
