Tuesday 6-8

Put the new schedule for the Brown Bag Lunch Series on the website under Additional Resources> Faculty. Tried to upload the pdf for the Pomona Boot Camp manual to the llc drive, but it said there wasn't enough space.

Tuesday 4 to 6 pm

Couple of students came to use computers (nothing special). Switched off 2 PCs and Macs. Guys from WITS helped resolve the problem.

2-4 Tuesday

Helped reconnect an H drive

I tried placing RSS feeds on classes for teachers who had requested them, but could not find the classes on WISE. The list of classes is in the LLC drive, in an excel document under a folder called WISE classes RSS

When you want to post a RSS feed onto wise, just follow these steps: (taken from Megan's post)

It is possible to put RSS feeds on WISE through HTML, and you don't have to be an expert to do it. Just go to this site: http://itde.vccs.edu/rss2js/build.php, fill out the form, and click Generate JavaScript. When the code is generated, copy it. Now go to the Home section in WISE and click on Options under Site Information Display. Click on the Source button (the first button above the text box) and paste the code into the text box. Then click Update Options.

Monday 6-9 pm. Computers aren't working

The Macs and some of computers mext to them (the ones next to the map wall) are not working. I'll e-mail Natalia, so that someone can take care of it tomorrow.
As for the rest, wery calm. Few people came. Nothing special.

Checked out the newly posted World News entries again. Pretty shnazzy~
Continued creating flashcards for the 400 Japanese class. Soon I'll be creating newer words instead of just study cards for past lessons~

Monday 4-5

Changed one of the templates for the World News Blog to make it show the first 12 entries instead of the first 10. The reason the number of entries won't change when the settings are changed is because the templates override the settings.

monday

prof overstreet (span 331) class was here, atajo, word reference, etc. shown
talked to natalia about wwn, uploaded new pictures from Chris on blog
tried to figure out how to display more than 10 enties. Zan had it set on 15 days.. changed it to entries, but all would only show up when you clicked on september 2008 entries link. for the present, i moved Jan and John's entries to the bottom because they aren't actually at willamette right now.

also hyperlinked the link on John's entry

Posted by jgfowler at 03:57 PM

Yeah~!

Fairly normal shift. I e-mailed the Japanese professors about WISE and they encouraged all students to sign up for it. Sat in as a Spanish class came in. Pretty coolio. Then I spent time creating flashcards for the Conversational Japanese class on WordChamp~

monday

-world news: natalia and i went through the pictures we have, i got a cd from chris in WITS pro and added pics of jose, luis, raphaelle and anne to the images >8453 folder for anna/WITS to make prettier.
-edited entries, cut them down and put the rest in continued entries
-i found out that the reason some of the entries weren't showing up on the page was that in the blog default code, it was set to display 10 entries. I think I changed that to 15, but it wasn't showing up...someone please check on this. It should be in the news>blogtemplate.php file.
-sarah stalker wants to reserve the lab next friday, gave that info to natalia
-on the website I added me and Jessa to the contact info
-Prof. Overstreet had a class in.

Monday 9-10:15

A couple students came in to use computers. An elderly couple who is auditing the French class needed help accessing the labs. Since I was helping them, I didn't get much of a chance to work on the website, but I'll be sure to get on that this afternoon.

A slow Saturday

Literally nothing happened... Ah well.
Checked out the flashcard function of WordChamp and started creating some for my class. I think it could be a worthwhile tool for kanji practice. I'll be the guinea pig~
Messed around with the translation abilities of Rikai.com. IIt works pretty well, and uses Jim Breen's WWWJDIC as its source~

Friday shift 1- 5 pm

Installed Java script at all PCs. Uploaded pictures to World News Blog. Copied all photos to Zen folder.

Posted by afrackel at 01:32 PM

Friday 9-11

Fixed the rss feed on the Japanese blog. For some reason it reverts back to code if you try to edit the Site Info section. If you edit it through the home page instead, it'll show the rss again. Tried uploading the Pomona Boot Camp pdf to the LLC website, but it wouldn't let me upload a pdf for some reason. I'll try it again with a PC later and see if that works.

In response to Andy's question: yes, Zan fixed Monica's World News blog editing privileges within an hour that I emailed her. No new voice mail messages. Watered the plants in Walton 21 , but I guess they did not need as much water as usual - seems someone had probably watered them earlier this week.

Nothing new, very quiet. No one came except for TAs.

Posted by afrackel at 01:55 PM

Past-due

I forgot to update this before I left yesterday. Sorry, everyone!
~~~~
Started off the shift by introducing the Japanese language assistant to the functionality of the Japanese Space. Then I played with the Japanese Space WISE page. Unfortunately, it looks like WISE can't read the characters so the left-hand tabs will have to stay in English. I renamed a few things to make it look better, imo.~
After a brief scare with the "membership" function, Natalia and I had a meeting with the Chinese, French, German, and Spanish language assistants to go over integrating WISE and other internet resources into their teaching. I feel like it was a success~
I wrote a follow-up e-mail to be sent to the teachers and students of foreign language detailing the new features available and urging everyone to join the "My [language] Spaces" right away~
I checked Monica's blog status, and it says she has access to the World News. Did someone already fix it?
The power was restored, it was just the fuse again. The guy from maintenance said he would be back tomorrow during normal hours to check it out and see if there is a problem.
Wise also seems to work, just the RSS feeds for Spanish and Japanese have a problem: It shows code rather than the feed. The others, Chinese and German, look like they are fine.
My [Language] Space Update
Natalia and I spent the afternoon working on incorporating new scheduling options and other features into the language assistants' spaces. By adding the "Sign-Up" tab into the browser you can add any events, like tutoring sessions, language tables, and extra-curriculars, and even have a sign-up checkable by the LA's themselves. You can add them manually to their own "Space" and then they can use the set-up as much as they want. I've already added the German, French and Japanese LA to their own "Space".
No new voice mail messages, Also....I love this shift. P.S. Friday 9-10:30
I found out that the reason the projector speakers weren't working was because the control panel set itself back to DVD instead of Computer. I wiped down the blue tables and put the Orange Clean and rag in the corner behind the Macs. Several people came in to use the computers, and then the Japanese class came in at the end of my shift.
2) The Russian keyboard stickers are incorrect on some keys. I checked out both keyboards. The layout of corresponding characters is the same as last year, but the stickers are placed incorrectly. I will speak with Natalia about whether these stickers are "re-peel-able", etc.
3) the black jacket has been on that chair for about 3 days, I believe.
Thursday 7-9
I tested Audacity on the computer hooked up to the projector to make sure it would work properly tomorrow for the presentation in the morning. Everything seemed to work fine, except that the audio output was set to the USB Logitech headphones instead of the computer speakers. I tried to change it, but couldn't figure out how.
I added myself to the new language WISE sites (My Chinese Space, My Spanish Space, etc.) and put the World News Blog, LLC Events Blog, and their respective language blog RSS feeds on each of them. When I was adding the RSS feeds, I discovered that it worked when I tried adding it to the Site Information Display in the Home section, but not when I tried to add it to the Site Info section. I haven't tried out other sections yet so it might be that the RSS feeds only work when you add them through the Home section.
Also, Natalia told me that the problem with the World News Blog was finally fixed! You should go check it out if you have the time.
Hey, everyone! My name's Victor. I'm new here. Nice to meet you. I'm just another guy representing Japanese and I'm working on an independent study of Korean as well. I'll be thinking of ways to integrate the new WISE system with a few other apps like WordChamp and the Japanese blog in an effort to make learning easier. I have my work cut out for me~
As far as today goes, I started going through some of the older Japanese blog entries to find anything of relevance. I primarily worked on navigating through the site Rikai and seeing what it has to offer. It seems to be both a learning tool and a dating service, interestingly enough.
Didn't get to the umlauts. I forgot how, Zan... sorry!
RSS Feeds for WISE
How to put RSS feeds on WISE without using the News or News Feed course tools:
It is possible to put RSS feeds on WISE through HTML, and you don't have to be an expert to do it. Just go to this site: http://itde.vccs.edu/rss2js/build.php, fill out the form, and click Generate JavaScript. When the code is generated, copy it. Now go to the Home section in WISE and click on Options under Site Information Display. Click on the Source button (the first button above the text box) and paste the code into the text box. Then click Update Options.
For an example, look at the FAST Resources WISE page: http://wise.willamette.edu/portal/site/FASTResources2008-09/page/5c1e82b7-ae2c-4149-8b2a-fa47e580a9f1.
Edit 9/18/08
It might not be possible to add an RSS feed to any section other than the Home section.
Worked on trying to figure out what's wrong with the World News blog again. I tried deleting, unpublishing, and sending comments to the junk folder, but nothing made the blog work correctly. The comments might have something to do with the problem, but there's something else wrong too. When I tried publishing a new entry that had no comments at all, it still didn't work.
Tuesday 6-8
Wrote up a short summary of the World News blog errors (see previous post). Watered the plants in the next room, tried to clean the backs of the yellow chairs, & washed the mugs on the blue table.
The Japanese TA came in and said she had tutoring scheduled until 9pm, but no one is listed on the LLC schedule for the 8pm-9pm shift on Tuesdays. Is someone supposed to have the shift? She said she would just post a note on the LLC door at 8 to say that she would be in the fish bowl.
WWN blog errors
On the Willamette World News blog, a lot of the links aren’t working. Mostly, the links aren’t working on the home page of the blog, but there are also other entries scattered throughout the archive that have broken links. The entries haven’t been deleted (you can still view them on Movable Type) so I don’t know what’s wrong. My best guess would be that it has something to do with the comments. All of the entries I found that didn’t work had comments that included spam. However, when I tried to delete the comments on one of the entries (http://blog.willamette.edu/centers/llc/worldnews/2008/04/ecuador_life_at_its_purest.php), it still didn’t work. I also found one entry (http://blog.willamette.edu/centers/llc/worldnews/2007/12/bulgarian_christmas.php) that had a ton of spam comments, but it still worked fine. So basically, I really don’t know what went wrong.
Natalia uploaded the German audio cds to WISE.
I reordered some of the Nakama files.
monday
there were a couple of classes in today
-i worked on uploading nakama audio files and putting them on the wise-nakama server. lots of challenges, i copied them onto itunes, put them in playlists and dragged them to the server. the server would occasionally disconnect and the files would disappear. now, i checked them out on WISE, and the files appear, but they don't play...even though they played in itunes before I moved the files and they seem to be of the correct format. I guess I am passing the torch on this for now...good luck.
