Friday 9-11
Some of the bookmarks in the boot camp manual linked to wrong places so I corrected them. Figured out how to link to specific sections of a pdf file, but it currently only works for the PCs. For now I linked to the sections directly from the Brown Bag Lunch Series 2008. Later on I'll create separate pages for each day.

I looked at the Chinese Audio First Year course on WISE and it seems to be working correctly. I couldn't find a course entitled Chinese 131 though.
I finally figured out how to put the Pomona Boot Camp Manual on the site. (http://www.willamette.edu/wits/llc/information/helpdesk/) Next I'll try to figure out how to link directly to the different sections of it.

Yestesday Indira showed the movie, 4 people came to LLC to study.
Today Jing brought 5 students to study. One of the students had problems with WISE: When she tried to open the file "CHINESE AUDIO 1st YEAR" (it's right in the folder Resources in course "CHINESE 131 01 08"). It said "Resource is not found". Jing said 3 students could not have access to it, others could, though.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Please, tell Jing, if you find out. For now students are ok without the access to this file, but they may need it.

Olga 6-9 shift
Here is the tutorial for tomorrow's Spanish class. I didn't change much from what Howie write, as it was already work of art, and pretty comprehensive. Here it is.
Make sure the computer is on the following settings in the Control Panel: audio playback and audio recording should be set to the USB headsets, not USB device
1. Import the video file following these steps (FILES -->GET MEDIA FROM-->FILES AND FOLDERS). The video is located on Desktop in a separate folder.
2. Drag the video clip to the timeline
3. In order to cut clip, select the place you want to cut on the timeline and click the scissors icon to the right of the play menu
4. Turn off the sound on the clip
• right click on the clip in the timeline, and select Show Properties
• select Volume from the menu on the right
• drag the clip volume to zero
5. Also turn off the sound on the sound bar under the monitor
6. Play and pause the video clip to the scene where you want to dub your voice
7. Click on "Add narration" button on the right
8. Make sure "Mute audio while recording" is checked
9. Click on the Record button on the "Narration" menu
10. Wait till it says "Start Recording 1 --> Recording..." and start dubing your voice
11. After you're done dubing the video clip, exporting the new video clip by going to FILES -->EXPORT -->MOVIE
12. Save the file in AVI type
13. Burn the AVI file into DVD using POWER2GO EXPRESS
As for the shift overall, I finished recording the files on the PCs, looked through the program again. 1 student came to prepare to the tomorrow's Spanish class. Simon came, was tutoring 2 students. A couple more people came to use skype and to study.

I wrapped up the cords for the headphones with mics, and Natalia found a box to put them in. They are now located underneath the air conditioner in a clear box, separate from the regular headphones. Natalia is considering ordering more of the Logitech headphones w/ mics if we can't figure out how to use the ones without USB cords.
I found a camera by one of the Macs so I put it on the second shelf of the rack next the external hard drive. (I think it might be Marta's.)

Monday 9-10:15
The 400-level Japanese class came in to do an assignment on Audacity. I showed the class how to use the drop box to send their assignments to Fujiwara-sensei. There were several minor problems throughout the class, most of which were solved. One problem was with the teaching station. I couldn't figure out how to record with and output the sound to headphones. The other problem was with the headphones that don't use USB. They played sound okay, but I wasn't sure of how to make them record. When they recorded they picked up a lot of outside sound so either that's how they usually are or the recording was set to the web cams. I didn't know if another class was going to use the headphones today or not so I left them out.

Monday Morning
Put all the headsets (Usb-port-propelled and else) onto the computers. The computer F's Audacity seems to work unless I messed up the count of computers somehow. Wrote a new Russian Blog entry (Halloween - themed). Figured out how to display a picture on the home page of My Russian Space in WISE. The computer by the mirror (closest to hallway) is not responding. I arranged with a student from the 9:10 class to use his own laptop in case the computer by the hallway still refuses to respond, and gave him a headset.
This is strange.

A class is coming in to use audacity in the morning at 9:10. I checked the computers, and it appears that audacity is working on all of them except computer F (lettered clockwise starting with the teaching station) for some reason. It might have just been a fluke, though.

Wed 5-9
Had the tail end of the WWN meeting, there are cookies and some milk left in the small viewing room.
We had three people come in for an international phone call to Australia, the first had been told that skype was free for international calls, and we had trouble with the number as well. (apparently you don't include the area code when dialing international calls)
The hard drive is in the second basket, I figured taking it out of the box would get tedious.

Busy day
Double-checked the status of Audacity's necessary "libmp3lame.dylib" file for the exportation of mp3's. It is now present on each of the lab's computers. It might take a few extra clicks to get to the file after the "export as mp3" option is chosen, but the file is in the "plug-in" folder if not just in Audacity's file~
Helped Jing brush up on English~
Took notes on today's WWN meeting, but I gots to get out of here for now (^_^);;~

Friday (3-5PM) .... I'm in <3 with Friday...best day ever
We had a question from Miho-our Japanese instructor on the option to exchange media files between teacher and student on WISE. (for exam purposes...)
The answer to that is updating the Drop Box tool in the class page on WISE.
Here is a brief tutorial on how to do that: (In case, you receive the same question in the future)
You have to log in WISE with administrative role.
Search for the class name
Go to the class workspace
Click on on Site Info
On the Site Info, look for the Add Tool
On the next page, tick on the "Drop Box"
Now, each member has the access to the Drop Box which allows them to exchange files with their instructor
All 4 now, if you have any questions, contact Natalia :)

Hello, all! What a nice day today. I think we've been fairly lucky with the weather regardless of temperature, knock on wood.

Continued to work on the LanTechBootCampMan checking out the rest of the links I couldn't find before. Although I'm not too sure about using iPods the websites have great audio. The Japanese Voice Blog is good, but for advanced speakers only~
The Japanese Literature at Bedtime gets a 10/10. Awesome stories AND a transcript of what is read. Excellent for practice! The voice recording is a little fuzzy, but nonetheless a great resource~

MBS Radio News is all in Japanese and worked fine on the PCs. Yomiuri News Stream is a good news source but I found it too difficult to watch any video or hear any radio~

Wordchamp Class Enrollment
A student was having trouble enrolling in Maria's Span 232 course. I haven't spoken to Maria yet, but if the problem turns out to be that the course got switched from "unlimited" to having a limit it is easy to fix. On Maria's Wordchamp account, she needs to select the course from the home page. Select "edit" under "Maximum Number of Students." From there, select "unlimited."

Tues 2-4
Introduced two students to WordChamp, they were looking for Spanish news sites and I figured the examples they had on web reader would do.
Helped Miho Fujiwara with exporting Audacity files as MP3, installed the LAME library to her computer to do that.

Monday 6-9 pm
Simon finished his tutoring hours, Indira came by. 3 students were looking for some information for their Spanish class assignment. Other than that, it is very calm.
Posted by msunada at 07:37 PM
Later that day...
Came in and talked with a girl about trying to use Rosetta Stone and its benefits~
Indira had an issue with a set of USB headphones, so I tested them and determined it was the audio settings on the computer to blame for the problem~
Not a whole lot of craziness happened, thankfully~

Monday 4-5
Showed a Spanish student how to sign up for tutoring on WISE & changed the text on LLC home page from LLC Events Blog to Cultural Events Blog at Natalia's request. I think Marta donated cookies and coffee to the LLC.
Was the announcement about tutoring sent out to the students in language classes, or was it posted to the separate language sites on WISE?

Monday, omnday, domnay
Started off helping Minami get a hold of one of her tutorees~
Helped them get set up with Audacity to cover their missed lesson from today~
A student came in looking to study Spanish on the computer so I set him up with WordChamp~
Went over a supposed problem with an audio file for Nakama I for Koishi-sensei. I believe it is merely a time association error being that the exercise starts well into the file instead of at the beginning. Already got back to her on that~

The 400 level Japanese class came in today to do an assignment on Audacity. There were only a few minor problems. The class went smoothly altogether. Later on today I will type up a short tutorial of how to send files to classes on WISE and email it to the Japanese class.

Sunday Evening
Sarah came in for more Latin help.
Aeriel came in for calculus help. I looked over some last placement exam stuff (it all looks good and ready to go!). And I emailed Maria about it.
9am shift: For the people who do not have USB headsets, you will need to make sure that they have headphones and that the settings on the computer allow audio input from the webcams. There should be 8 sets of USB headphones.

Friday 9-11
Several people came in to use the computers. A couple of them asked for the headphones with mics. A telemarketer called about credit cards & I hung up on him. Not a very eventful morning.
@ Marta: Congrats on freeing the bird and keeping the LLC kingdom safe! Also, hope you have a happy birthday even though you didn't want anyone to know about it. ;)

BIRD SAVED
All is well in the LLC kingdom. The bird has been saved. (long story short - it took a lot of my running all over the basement floor, chasing this bird out. This birds' stupidity is close to disproving the Evolution - birds this stupid shouldn't have survived. Also, it ran into the mirror window in the LLC a couple of times in the process. Thank you for the Birthday wishes, everyone. :D

Friday 7-9
THERE IS A BIRD IN Walton 21. It was caught in the grid-locked window that Walton 21 and LLC share. Couldn't get out. So I let it into Walton 21. Now the damn thing won't get out. Someone help.Tried to figure out why FGR's definitions flashcards were unable to be put into an assignment. Had no luck, other then she did not have second-language field filled out. No new voice mail messages. Just me and the bird. And My Russian Space.

Dmitriy's 4-6 shift
Tutoring from about 4 to 4:30, then everybody disappeared, we had some sweets, thanks to whoever.

Dmitriy's 9-12 shift
No students were present in LLC, only Martha and then Natalia. We have two sets of computers with Russian phonetic keyboards and stickers on them, one by teaching station and the other by the door to Walton 21, but the one by the door does not work properly, the stickers with letters do not match actual letters, so i will stop by Russian store and by the stickers.

Busy day?
I started off the day working with Natalia and Kelsey on an e-mail for the language teachers~
I finished creating study flashcards for the Conversational Japanese class on WISE. I will hopefully be able to entertain the class when we all come in for a presentation Friday morning~
Helped Jose with creating tutoring sessions on WISE, then proceeded to e-mail Monica about the same problem. They were creating a new meeting for every 20-minute session versus one big one with multiple timeslots. I feel like this will be a recurring problem over the course of the week~
