updated events blog
lots of tutoring in here today
showed a student atajo. had to break the news that no, we do not have a computer program that corrects your spanish sentences/grammar. that would be sweet though...
prof. blanco came in because she was trying to print a test from myspanishlab. the test was a window inside of a window... so something that was actually multiple pages would only print as one page, with lots of stuff cut off... anyone know what to do about this??

Quiet day. Reviewed Spanish Website, suggested a few potential new links, specifically a section on Latin American Poltiics, Beyza if you have any other suggestions that;d be great. Sent out google map directions to Natalia's. Sent email to Chris Linn asking him to pick up left over milk crate from catering event. Decided that we should probably have a mexican food stand outside of the LLC.
happy wednesday

Megan 2,30->6,00
A couple of students came in for Spanish tutoring with Alejandra and Pablo. Beyza and Marta stopped by for a while. There were about 10 students here using MyLanguageLabs, skype, facebook, etc. throughout the shift.
Natalia had a meeting for language faculty in WLT 21 at 4:30.
I researched opening documents in Macs that have the .docx extension for Miho Fujiwara. I found that Microsoft has an Open XML file format converter for Macs that converts Open XML files to .rtf format. I was able to install it on her computer.
I removed the Talk Blog completely from the Willamette Abroad Blog site.
I put the extra documents on all the PCs in the trash bin and downloaded VLC media player to four of them. All the PCs should now have VLC media player installed.
Helped Maria Delgado locate the contents section for the Spanish Placement Test on WISE.
Looked up website hit counters some more for the World News Blog.

Sascha's 8am-1pm shift
The first half of the day was quiet. Only two students came in. One girl was working on Chinese homework and I later helped her get connected to my chinese space and chinese audio. The boy who was here needed to know the hours of Spanish tutors so that he could interview them for something or other.
Eri came in. Natalia, Eri, Andy, and I all worked together on re scheduling the LLC open house. We are thinking sometime in november. We also decided on some interactive "stations" that we will have during the open house.
Each person today should go around to all the PCs and clean the desktops by dragging all of the VLC documents and extra documents to the Trash. DON"T EMPTY THE TRASH and try to not put the VLC player into the trash.
As girl was in who needed Pascal to sign something--he did. It is now on top of the wooden cabinet behind our workstation...next to the dodexahedron.

Sascha's 2.30-4pm shift
Gaetano's class came in for a small orientation today. Though they had a short amount of time, we got through adding everybody to WISE my French space and to french audio and got through a small small orientation about wordchamp. They should have had more time in the lab but it will be ok I think. One girl couldn't log on, so I will deal more with that tomorrow. After that the lab filled up with tutoring (spanish and french now). I also met with Eri on the topic of our LLC open house.

-Helped student with MyFrenchLab. Turned out all she needed to do was hit 'browser tune up'. Talked to Natalia about how we need to start taking note of which classes students are coming from, start holding teachers accountable for understanding the basics of mylanguagelab software.
-Started reviewing the Spanish section of the LLC website. Beyza, you can see google documents for what I have so far. I'm not sure how to remove the links from the website but I made a list of links that are no longer valid.
Fall is here. I found a secret pumpkin patch at Minto Brown park that I might tell you about on Friday.

Slater came to study Arabic, but we COULD NOT FIND ROSETTA ARABIC CD!!! Please, let us know if you find it. The guy will come next week to check it out. Meanwhile, I showed him our Tell Me More CDs, but those begin on the level when people are already supposed to know letters and reading rules, it was good for listening, though. What he really enjoyed was wordchamp: I showed how to create flashcards wit basic words, how to practice, download flashcards as mp3 etc. This was a lot of information for the first time, so he was happy with it. But we really should find the Rosetta CDs (especially, as we have the box for Arabic, so the CD should also be around).
This took my entire shift. I also organized the CDs with the software we have.
Alejandra was here.

Completely empty today.
The Willamette Abroad page is not broken, even though it isn't showing 5 entries at the moment. Since it doesn't show entries if they are older than a certain number of days, it won't necessarily have 5 entries at any given time. I tried to look for a way to extend the number of days, but I couldn't find where the code for it was on the site.

Today there was only one student in the lab. He is working on spanish hw quietly. Andy is here now on shift. Natalia and I discussed some issues with the WU Abroad page--it only displays the first entry when it should display five entries. Megan, I have added this to your action items list. Jessa I also added something to yours, but I forgot what it was about... Does everybody know Eri yet? Read through her action item list, it is very cool stuff!
I will be out of town until Sunday night. You can reach me on email though. Vlad will be covering my Saturday shift and my short Friday shift will be covered by Natalia.

The LLC was extremely busy this afternoon. There were at least a dozen students here throughout my shift, probably more. They were busy with a lot of different things including Spanish translation and dubbing, MyLanguageLabs, and tutoring sessions. Pablo, Alejandra, Marta, and Pascal were all here tutoring today, and Beyza dropped by for a while too.
I tried going to see Prof. Fujiwara a couple times to install an add-in that would allow her to read documents with the .docx extension on her Mac, but she wasn't in her office.
I checked out Google Analytics as a hit counter for the WWN Blog and emailed Beyza and Hayley about it. It has a lot of useful statistics, but I'm not sure if it can be visually available on the website.
I added Katie Seidel's blog to the Willamette Abroad Blog for South Africa.
The events blog should also be up-to-date now. Natalia asked me if there was a way to not display the events that were more than a few days ahead of the current date. Right now the only thing I can think of is holding off on publishing the events we don't want displayed yet. I'll try to see if I can figure something else out.

Sascha Tues 8-13
Busy day today:
I cleaned the lab computer workstations and tutoring tables. Later Andy and I cleaned the computer screens. Blanco's class was here working on Spanish dubbing project. We downloaded VLC media player on the computers (it wasn't here after the ghosting) so that the students could slow down the videos. I talked with Natalia about the LLC's potental move to new Beta wing and how that would dramatically increase the foot traffic that we received. Cool.
Then I met with a student about wordchamp, spanish wise page, and Atajo. He wanted to know if he could have that software, but I told him that he'd have to buy it. (though he didn't seem to mind once he figured out you could use it wherever on any campus computers...)
I met with Eri (our new staff/intern member from TIUA. TIUA Liason.) We are helping her put together a LLC open house which will be in the 2nd or 3rd week of October... we'll keep you posted. (all of our notes are on the action item list.
I also gave some tasks to Jessa and to Megan. (check your action item list)
Beyza just came in and she said it was super hot and humid outside... icky.
Have a nice Tuesday regardless!

Today was a Friday. Natalia and I talked about Maria Delgado's two classes that came in to get a wordchamp orientation. She delievered two very funny and very well received presentations. Olga took notes and she is compling them on a google doc so that every staff member can become more familier with what exactly wordchamp does.
I cleaned out the AC vents. They were very disgusting and Olga was right to be shocked when she saw what we have been breathing! Anyway, now they are spik and span.

Several students were using Skype. Recorded exercises for Russian class for tomorrow with Olga. We found that using DLRecorder students are able to listen and record their voice, and listen then what they recorded. However, if they save the file, then only the part that was recorded by students will be saved.
Other programs, such as Audacity, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Elements do not even give the possibility to students listen the file while recording.
So, we decided to come a little bit earlier tomorrow and check again all the programs.

The lab was really busy today. There were about ten students here using computers. Alejandra, Pablo, and Marta were tutoring students, and Eri came in to visit.
Amadou Fofana came in to ask for help with Skype.
Mark Conliffe called to ask why he wasn't able to do the exercises on MyFrenchSpace. The problem turned out to be he had his pop-up blocker on. I emailed him the getting started and troubleshooting documents for MyLanguageLabs for future reference.
Alejandra wanted to print something in color, so Natalia told her about Willamette Print/Design (http://www.willamette.edu/dept/cc/). They have many different options, but for a regular color copy or printing, they charge $.45.
I added the email Stacy West forwarded about learning Chinese to the Events Blog, as well as Minami's email about the Okinawan Cultural Workshop.
Beyza needed to use Data Analysis on Excel in order to do her stats homework. It turns out that it is not available for Excel 2008 (on the Macs), but it's available as an Add-in for Excel 2007 (PCs).
I printed out this week's lab schedule for Natalia. It looks a lot less busy than last week's.

If Skype is set to the wrong webcam on the PCs, you can fix it by going to Tools > Options > General Video Settings and choosing USB Video Device where it says Select Webcam.
A lot of the headphones were still out and not put away. One of them doesn't work on the right side so Sascha put it on the top shelf next to the Macs.
I'm almost finished with transferring the LLC's Seedwiki to the wiki on the LLC's WISE site because Seedwiki is being shutdown.
Whoever closes the lab, please remember to turn on the air conditioner.

Sascha's Friday shift 13.00-14.35
Today's shift was very quiet. I helped a freshman girl get acquainted with our Spanish resources and wordchamp and all the other good stuff that we do here. She really enjoyed it and was very enthusiastic about the wordchamp program. Be sure to share our knowledge!
Olga, Vlad, Natalia, and I discussed life in general and the sweet new Russian recordings that Olga and Vlad so eloquently uploaded. Ogromnoe spacibo!!
Beyza will not be in on Monday morning, so let's check our schedules and see about helping her out...
Beautiful day, I am going out now!
Posted by aschilba at 02:35 PM
Marta 8-9 am and 11-1pm
Morning: set up the laptops for Farrin's class coming in, assisted Natalia in presentation. Spoke with WITS front desk about having someone "there" for Beyza's 9"10 presentation to Farrin in Collins 407. Pablo was here. Later in the day: from 11ish to 1ish, as no one else was on shift , I assisted in another Farrin's class presentation = for this one, Alejandra was here. Awesome day.

there's a slight glitch on mylanguage lab that lead students to a frenzy:
the time zone which is set as Eastern Time by default
needs to be set for the pacific zone so that their work isn't submitted in late :)

Vladimir 1:30 - 4 pm
Uploaded Movie files on WISE for Spanish class. Helped Natalia write an email to French and Spanish professor about the issue with time zones in MyLanguageLab.

Sascha's 9:30-afternoon shift
Today I helped a couple of students with their Apple laptops and setting up mylanguagelabs. One important reminder for that: Make sure that the students have not clicked the pop-up blockers button under File in Safari.
Next: A student enrolled in myspanishlabs came in and said that the program always marked her assignments as late...even though she was early with them. This is an easy problem to fix. First, go into "My Profile" in the top right hand of the page. Second, click on the "Time Zone" button. Scroll to Pacific Time and you got it.
Next: Maria Blanco wanted to have the SPAN dubbing project videos renamed so Andy and Vlad took care of that.
Next: Alejandra and another boy are in here working on Spanish. Vlad just came on shift and Beyza is also still here working.
Your wages have been updated for the new year. Yay.
Two Important Things:
1) As a staff member, it is YOUR responsibility to be at your shift at your assigned time. If you absolutely cannot make your shift, it is YOUR responsibility to get somebody else to cover for you. Do not leave the LLC "high and dry" by simply not showing up. Communication is key here; let's try and take care of shift covers responsibly and promptly.
2) When you are on shift, keep your Gmail chat box ON. We can even set our status to, "LLC Shift." The idea behind this is that we (LLC staff) can communicate easily and quickly if need be.
3) Schedules. Please email me (aschilba@willamette.edu) any scheduling changes that you may have. Or, drop me an email anytime about really anything...

Andy's Shift 11:30-12:30
Worked with Sascha on renaming some Spanish audio files on WISE, the edit button didn't work so we had to use WebDav to download, rename, then re-upload the files.

Megan 8:00p-9:00p
Andy was here and Diane was still using Skype.
I posted instructions on how to get to the audio files on MyLanguageLabs (see below).
Posted by msunada at 09:15 PM
Audio Files on MyLanguageLabs
1. Click on the Course Content tab.
2. Click on View All Content (underneath Course Content).
3. Click on the Chapter you would like the audio files for.
4. Click Student Resources.
5. Click on Downloadable Media Files.
A pop-up window should appear with links to both the Student Activities Manual and Textbook mp3 files for the chapter you selected.
You can either listen to the mp3s online, by clicking on the links, or download the files to your computer. To save the mp3 files to your computer, you can either download the zipped file or right-click on the audio links and choose Save Target As... (Internet Explorer) or Download Linked File As... (Safari).

Andy's Shift Wed 6-8
Covered for Megan from 6-8, quiet shift. Pascal was tutoring for a bit, and Deng came in around 7:50 to use skype.
The computers that were logged in at 5:55 had an apple update program pop up. It's not a big issue at all, but in case anyone wanted to update apple software...

Olga's shift
1. Worked with Natalia on a Russian Project. I'll be here tomorrow evening to dub some dialogues for Russ 231 that will be coming to LLC on Friday.
2. Helped Pascal with setting up his tutoring sessions. When tutors add more that 4-5 meetings students can't see them all. To see them they'll have to check the box just above the tutoring session. Also helped add Announcements button to My French Lab.

Megan 3:00p-5:30p
Around 5 students came in to use MyLanguageLabs. One student had a technical problem with MySpanishLab. When she submitted her answers, they were marked incorrect when they were actually correct. After several repeated attempts, her answers were finally accepted. Another student needed help finding where the audio files were. I'll put up a short tutorial on how to find them later on today.
The 7 Vidas videos are now up on WISE for the SPAN 365 Translation class.
I'm researching hit counters for the WWN blog, and I also made sure the laptops were charging.

Sascha's 8-13.00 Tuesday
Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I apologize for any scheduling mistakes last week--we are still fine tuning the schedule as classes change. Please please look over the calendar and check your shift times out. IF the schedule is NOT accurate, please correct it!
Today was a busy day. Blanco's class came in to do a general presentation about wordchamp and WISE and Atajo. There will be one girl coming in later on to discuss with Natalia about getting her willamette.edu email to work for wordchamp. (Wordchamp did not let her register because it said the email had already been used...)
I helped a student with her laptop and setting up myspanishlab.com. NOTE TO STAFF: mylanguagelab does not work very well within the WISE browser. Make sure the students use IE by itself, and not within the WISE (if they have problems...).
Beyza, Jan, and Natalia discussed the WU world news. Jessa will be sending out a FB message to all of the users.
Pablo Morales (Spanish tutor) came in and I upgraded his privileges on WISE, WU World News Blog, WU Events Blog, and WU Spanish Blog.
I helped a student get set up with her Mac on myspanishlabs. She will have to upgrade her Safari browser to 10.5... but until then, she will be working in our lab.
Important: Whoever is on shift next, please install Atajo on our LLC mac computers. (Beyza or Megan?)

Installed JAVA and flash player on the computer near the teaching station. Around 5-6 students came, they needed help with joining the Collage audio on WISE.
A guy called, his name is Carl. He is looking for German interpreter, who can help him order online the certificate from a german website. So, if you know German or you know somebody who knows German please call him by Tuesday. His phone number is 503-362-4289.

today's duties:
helped Andy enable & disable pop up blockers and download java and flash player
on each individual every single computer in the lab EXCEPT the computer
near the teaching station(the one on your right as you hurry into the llc)
which for whatever reason rejects Java, in its final stage no less!
thennnnnnnnn Natalia and I helped a few really confused students
with simple WISE worries.
oh what you do to me, no one knows!

Sascha's 9.30-12.30
Today was a productive day:
Talked to Natalia about the mylanguagelab orientation that took place on Wed.
A German girl has been using Skype. Max also was using skype.
Marta is also here, though she is not on shift at the moment. (Bessie, Marta's computer is sitting here too)
We are now leaving the Small Viewing Room door unlocked during business hours.
Andy and Beyza are going around to the re-imaged computers and setting them up for our orientations tomorrow.
Note to Staff: Let's leave the small lamps on in the darker parts of the lab...
And! Because Moveable Type is strange, make sure that when you post your blog you include your name in the Title entry.

thursday 8-9:30
arrived at LLC 5 minutes early, but Marta had already opened lab. Checked out applications for my language lab on teaching station, and as far as I could tell, all was working. I didn't realize (until Natalia told me, 10 minutes before my shift was over...) that I should have read Megan's blog about some glitches in the my language lab program. sooo read her blog??
Posted by oslabari at 09:22 AM
September 02, 2009
Megan 8pm-9pm
The MyLanguageLabs site wasn't running properly on the re-imaged computers, so I checked them out and found the following problems:
-Java is not up to date (run browser check-up)
-pop-up blockers do not have the correct exceptions
-third party pop-up blockers are not disabled (in this case Adobe PDF)
-Adobe Flash Player 10 is not installed (browser check-up says flash player is fine, but it isn't)
There's a troubleshooting document in the WISE Resources section of MySpanishSpace and MyFrenchSpace as well as a hard copy on the table between the Macs telling how to fix the problems with both pop-up blockers.
I corrected these errors on the teaching station, and the site seems to run relatively smoothly now. It would still be a good idea for someone else to re-check it just to be sure. I didn't test the Macs or any of the laptops though.
Side Note: In IE 6, the browser crashed after closing the window with the ebook open. Now in IE 7, the browser also crashes after closing the window with the tutorials open. Maybe something we should email Corey/Pearson about?

Andy's Shift
Covered for Megan from 6-8om on Wed, Alejandra and Deng came in to use skype and otherwise was very quiet.
Posted by oslabari at 07:57 PM
Olga's 4-6 shift
1. sent e-mail to llc staff (if you haven't seen it and you are interested in several extra hours, e-mail Natalia with your availability times on Thursday and Friday this week)
2. Instructions for professors (Natalia wants professors to display this information on the WISE sites for the classes they teach so that students can access My (language) Spaces). So, to reach My ... Space:
a) go to WISE site and log in using your Willamette user name and password
b) chose Membership tab on the right and then Joinable Sites button on the top of that window
c) scroll down to find the Language Space you need and click Join
d) after that when you next time log in to WISE you would be able to see the Space tab in WISE window
3. Charged the laptops so that the next My... Lab training class can use them

Jessa 2-4
2 classes (Gavilanez and Fofana) came in to sign up for WISE and language labs. I also sent an e-mail to a potential WWN contributor and am trying to figure out when Jan, Natalia, and I can meet for WWN.

Oopps. Way to start off the year by forgetting to blog!
Continued charging the laptops and put them in Natalia's office. Andy and I tried to help Diana (?) get her computer to collect to the internet, but we weren't sure what to do. We recommended she go by WITS the next day.

Megan 3pm-6pm
Sydney came in to use a computer and talk to Natalia.
The "new" calendar is now linked to the Assistants Schedule on the LLC homepage and is set to display only one week at a time.
Rebecca Farrin wanted to know how her students could join the SpanishPlacementTest on WISE. Here is a link for instructions on how to join WISE sites in general: http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2009/09/how_to_join_wis.html
When I sent out the email yesterday about the LLC contact page, I didn't realize the site I linked had changed over the summer. I sent out a follow-up email today that included some examples from past LLC assistants. I also forgot to add Hayley to the list of pictures received.
Françoise Gœury-Richardson came in to Walton 21 to use the computer. When she logged on, the computer did not automatically connect to her H-drive. I spoke to Natalia about it, and she said that she would contact Audrey. Françoise also had questions relating to WISE.
I also worked on editing the new contact page and Japanese Nakama pages on DreamWeaver.

2. In the My Workspace tab, click on Membership.

Sascha 8am-3pm
Today:
German girl came in to use Skype.
Max came in to use Skype and type an email.
Marta was preparing for her Japanese class.
Housekeeping information (watch for it!)
Helping Maria Delgado with WordChamp- She is teaching a class tomorrow and wanted to know if her vocab list on Wordchamp is only a vocab list, or if it is actually a flashcard drill. She wants it to be a flashcard drill. Natalia and I figured out that WU had not received an invoice yet. Natalia is taking care of this and we should hopefully have the access up and running soon.
Huike Wen came in to get help posting information on WISE. Some documents worked while others did not. I am not sure why this is, but I am hoping that Beyza wrote a blog entry that detailed her work with this issue.
The "new" calendar is up and should be linked to the Assistants' Calendar link on the LLC homepage. While this is the TENTATIVE schedule for the first two weeks, it will eventually be rescheduled after we see how the weeks went.
Please get your photo into Megan as soon as possible. We need to get our namecards working.
If you are on shift, please keep your Gmail chat ON so that Natalia and other LLC staff can chat with you about something.
Please make sure to BLOG about your shift after it is done!
