recipe

This simple recipe is to die for. Please try it but don't use too much cinnamon because if you do it's like "ech".

1 medium onion
3 cloves of garlic
2 tsp. each of cumin, cinnamon, and allspice (or chili powder is good too - basically whatever you have)
28 oz broth, chicken or vegetable
3/4 cup lentils
3/4 cup rice

cut up onion and garlic and cook them in olive oil for a few minutes. add the spices, cook another min. or so and add the broth and the lentils. Bring it to the boil, reduce heat, cover, cook for about 10 minutes. add the rice, boil, reduce heat, cover, cook for another 20 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.

Last night's shift: Not much to report. In fact, nothing. The Japanese class did not meet this evening, and no one came in.

Today's shift: somewhat busier. People in and out - Marta, Jessa, Cheryl, Lucia, Natalia, the Hebrew professor.

If you go to the wiki and to LLC planning ideas, there should be a link to everyone's name - please fill in a short update on what you've been working on lately and any ideas you'd like carried over to next semester.

We also planned a bit for the party next Sunday - there's a list of invitees on the table. If we missed anyone that should be invited, please add it to the list - if you are coming, please circle your name; if not, please cross it out. But you WILL be coming, of course.

Also installed Roxio on computer O.

Thursday pm

Busy in here today - lots of people. Marta, Misuzu with her tutoring, Beyza, Anna, several others. A guy came in looking for Natalia; I told him she'd be back on Monday (right?). A couple of cookies left by the printer if anyone wants them.

There was a girl on skype who talked very loudly. When she left I cornered her and asked her maybe not to say fuck so much at the top of her voice. She seemed amenable to this.

thursday afternoon

Carmen was here - she's moving to San Jose so won't be back. Sad. Goodbye, Carmen.

Sascha lied, I didn't give any of the willamette abroad presentation. The others did an awesome job, though.

Thursday evening

Doreen brought Natalia an Easter basket. Jessa and I measured the new Willamette Abroad and WWN board upstairs for URL signs. Many people were in working, Beyza, Marta, some people using skype (or similar). Jessa is going to see Obama speak tomorrow at the fairgrounds and I am jealous - tickets are sold out.

Saturday afternoon

Quiet, as always. I feel like it's a waste of money for Willamette to pay me to be here. Jai came in with me, and thought that our new air conditioner was a bread maker.

Carmen hasn't been in for two weeks, so I hope she's all right.

Thursday afternoon

First, belated from Wednesday evening - filled in for Lucia from 6 on. Very few people in, Misuzu was in and out. There were people watching the Japanese movie, but when I went to pick up the DVD there wasn't any, so they must have taken it with them

Today: Busy at first, someone using Skype, Marta was in as well as Beyza, Jessa, my friend Dawn, and some other people. A girl used the phone.

Natalia was in and out - some people working on Russian, and Misuzu is here tutoring. Ty left a bag with his graduation gown in it here, but he came back for it.

Jessa and I tested the webcam program with Professor McCreery - had some minor problems but by the end it was working just fine.

covered part of Lucia's shift, from 6 on.

Misuzu was in and out. No one else came in, and I was all alone except for an ENORMOUS spider. If you're afraid of spiders you might consider quitting the LLC right now, because that sucker was HUGE.

Japanese movie is on the whiteboard.

Wednesday pm

Hey all,

I wrote my German blog about the comic making site and Google Earth.

Japanese class never showed up in Walton 21 today - their class must have been cancelled.

Checked out the reservation for Zan's philosophy club meeting. We don't have a separate google calendar for Walton 21, so I put the event in the llc calendar with a note that it's happening in 21.

Discovered with Natalia that a short video that plays through MBA's Spanish Comp and Discussion Class will open with realtime, but ONLY when the computer is logged in as administrator. They're coming in tomorrow morning at 8:30 for an orientation, so we'll have to log in all the computers as administrator and fix the problem afterward.

Thursday afternoon

Good day today. Jessa came in and I introduced her to a bunch of stuff like Atajo and the language grammar programs and the booth, and she took a look at some of the Hebrew CDs we have. Also watered the plants and washed some dishes and worked a little more on updating the willamette Wiki - fixed some broken links, etc.

Question - does anyone know how to change the styles/colors of Willamette movabletype blogs? If so please email me. Thanks!

Not much else going on, someone using Atajo.

Saturday

LLC was locked when I got here at 2, but I was a little late, so not sure if Howie wasn't here or just left right on time.

No one in during my afternoon shift today. Spent time looking at the LLC wiki to assess what's there and what needs to be updated and reorganized.

PS guys thanks for a fun party on Thursday - it made me happy.

Saturday afternoon

A maintenance guy and his dog came in to visit me. No students or anything, though. This is always a very dead shift.

Personal request from me: when you turn the computers on and off, please do it on the tower (below the desk!) and not on the monitor (above the desk!). Otherwise mass confusion ensues. Thanks.

Fun day - as you can probably see, we got the New and Improved lamps all set up, complete with bulbs. It looks just great, so the rule is no more florescent lights, ever.

I also copied a book for Natalia, a Japanese student and the visiting Japanese professor are here hanging out, along with Jacob working on WWN.

Wednesday

A nice shift after tasty pizza and helpful training.

Caroline came in and we discussed options with Wordchamp for the two German classes - decided to set up a class for the first year students and let the second year students have independent accounts.

Misuzu was here for a movie night so I showed her how to make microwave popcorn.

I got the Japanese movie out of 21 and it is in the black cabinet.

Monday evening (oops, and saturday)

What happened on Saturday: the Russian lady (I asked her her name again, and I forgot it again) came in to watch a vhs in the viewing room. Beyza came in and we talked about movies.

What happened tonight: Misuzu & Co. were here tutoring a couple of students. Lucia was in and out. Natalia called: if anyone saw a small brown book titled "West to East" or something like that, please let her know. I had to leave at 8:30 and Jacob was supposed to cover for me, but it didn't happen so I just closed early.

Thursday 2:30-5

Elizabeth was in, I helped her set up a Skype and Mixxer account and send messages to some Mixxer people. Helped Genna (?) with Audacity to record a french language file. Too much background noise so she used the PIT room. Lucia is applying for an internship at the capitol, so I took a look at her cover letter. Helped a transfer Russian student look for some simple grammar info to print out but he will go buy a laminated thing at the bookstore instead. Natalia and I took down the ugly paper on the bulletin boards in the stairway to W21 and rearranged some posters, then put up our new foam sign above the door. Natalia the destructor took down the brass LLC sign that was on the first floor so we'll have to put it up somewhere else. What a busy shift!

Welcome back, all!

Hey kids. Hope your vacation was joy-filled and restful, complete with good food. Mine sure was.

Quiet evening here in the LLC, Misuzu was here tutoring and we updated her times on the lab schedule. BTW a million congratulations on the new LLC site, looks bloody fantastic. I am totally impressed.

There are some lovely new laminated signs with the updated LLC hours that have been posted in various places around the lab and W21. Assignment for someone tomorrow: could you go up to the dean's office and ask permission to place the one remaining sign (on the table) (and more signs, once and if we print them) on the public bulletin boards upstairs? Most flyers can only go up for a limited time so we will have to get special permission to post them there indefinitely. We may have to beg for this privilege, I'm not sure.

Quiet morning to start out with, then lots of people came in!

One girl was looking to practice Audacity this morning, and will be back later to do the actual recording for her tv episode. Whoever's working might want to put her in the pit room. Also, does anyone know what happened to the overview document for the spanish dubbing project? I couldn't find it on the llc drive.

Otherwise, some Russian students were in, and Wailana is typing something, and another girl came in wanting to borrow a French book that we don't have.

We have new headsets that will be helpful for skyping people! They are in a box under computer A.

Sidney and the Italian girl were here both using Skype. The guy who's going to Ukraine was in using Rosetta stone.
Natalia and Carter and I spent some time trying to set up the online conference call site, but still had some problems with the webcams. In fact, webcam problems seem to occurring all over the lab... Stacy West came in to talk with Natalia as well.

Kindra is here skipping class, a girl with dark hair who comes in a lot is writing a paper using Atajo, the lady with the white hair is using Wordchamp (I helped her make flashcards), and some other girl is doing something else. Sorry to not be more specific but I don't want to hover over their shoulders!

installed Korrektor on computer C. To activate it, open Word, click on the arrow that says "add or remove buttons" along the top bar, go to customize, toolbars, and duden (at the bottom).

Jan came in for a textbook and some stuff that he had left in the viewing room.
The guy who is going to the Ukraine came in to use Russian Rosetta Stone, but was having problems with the sound on Computer O - so we'll have to check that out yet again.
Wrote my language blog entry and researched German podcasts.
Tried to figure out why the NITLE classroom won't work (this is a program that our French professor abroad is using to set up a meeting with the French TAs). Apparently there's a problem with a JNLP file? Tried to install the latest version of Java to see if that would help but didn't due to lack of administrative privileges.

I sent out an email suggesting that we record who is in the LLC and what programs they are using. Thus, today: Italian skype session, Justin learning Arabic with Rosetta stone, the guy who is going to the Ukraine using Russian rosetta stone, and two or three people printing stuff out.

German pctv is not working AGAIN... but we're working on it.

Made coffee.
Helped out a guy who is learning Russian to go to the Ukraine next spring - I introduced him to some of our resources but the Natalia came and take over, since she knows more. Sascha and Dmitriy, he may be showing up during your shift!
Also Arabic Justin was here, and Karen to use English software, and a couple of other people.
New idea: In your blog entries, see if you can make a quick note of which students were in here, and what they are doing. This will help us get a better idea of what the LLC is used for during different times of day.

Friday!!

This is a little late, but entry for my shift Friday morning:
It was busy! Caroline, the German TA, came in and asked me to help her set up a WordChamp class account for both first and second year German. We worked on that and set up one that she and I and prof. Maurer could all access. Then later Fr Maurer came down and I taught her how to use the program herself.
I put a bunch of stuff on the new shelf and generally tidied things up a bit - feel free to move things in the cabinet if you don't like how I've put it. Also we have a first aid kit on the bottom shelf, just for future reference.
Finally, an ancient hebrew class came in to look at our resources and I think many of them were surprised and pleased to see some of the programs we have. I discovered that wordchamp can type in Hebrew so I think they will be using it quite a bit!
Have a great weekend, all.

Wednesday morning

Busy morning.

-Justin the Arabic guy was in, working on Rosetta Stone
-We ordered two CD cases for the myriad disks that are in the cabinet
-Vany came in to check the vandalism damage. He also took a look at Computer O and fixed the sound (it was plugged in wrong). Also, some info about computer O: PCTV does NOT play international TV channels. Instead, it is set up so if you put a VHS into the VCR on the cart (middle shelf), the video and audio will play on the PCTV program, channel 3 (marked VCR).

Hey all.

Wrote the entry for the German blog. As one of the topics is PCTV, I checked it out and discovered that the German station 54 does not work yet again - we'll have to look into this.

Very quiet. No one here this evening. However, this morning a law student came in to use our Arabic Rosetta Stone software. Hooray!

I've been testing out the Tell Me More software in both German and Japanese - still not totally impressed but I need to explore a little more, so the verdict isn't out yet. The voice recognition is really cool.

Fridaaaaaay

Hi all. As you may have heard, the classroom was vandalized last night! The perpetrators broke a bunch of stuff but were kind enough to place their beer bottles neatly in the wastebasket.

Other than that excitement, it's been a rather quiet morning - several people in here working.

German TV, which was working yesterday, was blank today - so Natalia and I messed around a bit and it is now up and running.

a student was in listening to French blackboard audio
Natalia sent out emails publicizing both the first edition of WWN and the second week of the language blogs.
Sidney came in to pick up her cd/dvd(?)
the beautiful list of current language classes is on the table, so eventually we need to look up and mark down which classes have already been in.

To Do List: If anyone can look at the WWN blog and figure out how to make it accept comments (and how to make the comments link show up on the page!) that would be fantastic and I would give you a kiss on the cheek.

PCTV on the computers is very pixellated on all channels. Why? Why, I ask you, why?

Also, the german channel (54) is not working, so Natalia and I messed around with the receivers upstairs and it turns out the guy has to come back and fix it for us.

When we reimaged the computers, Korrektor got lost so we reinstalled it on computer F and may add it to a couple of others.

Figured out entries and pics for WWN.

Connected a mic to computer N. The remaining one needs to be connected to K (plug it into the pink hole!)

TGIF

A girl came in trying to get to some audio files for Russian. They weren't the ones on blackboard, and they weren't the ones on the other CD we have, but the might be the ones on the CD she has at home... Natalia will talk to Prof. Conliffe at some point and figure this out so we know how to help people next time.

Another girl couldn't use her IM program because it was out-of-date, and only an administrator can update it. We will talk with WITS to find out our position on IM programs, and possibly reserve one computer for them.

Working on WWN stuff to make sure the first issue gets published relatively soon!

Someone came to use Skype on computer N. It worked beautifully.

What's today, Wednesday?

Hallo.

Spent some time looking over the blogs and previewing the world news - looks like a good bunch this year. Tentative blog ideas for this week: delicious, webmail language settings, Willamette abroad, and your own personal choice!

Explored the Tell Me More German program. On the way I encountered more sound problems with computer O... it can't detect any sound devices, and "the sound card may be in use". Any thoughts?

Between Andy, Natalia and I we are trying to figure out Chinese webmail use. Still working on it. Not all the computers are set up to display PRC Chinese - although it is installed - so that needs to be changed through the control panel.

Also, a party for all the language faculty may be in the works.

Maria Blanco-Arnejo came in with a movie from the library ("the incredible shrinking man") to copy to VHS. However, we can't copy it because it has copyright protection, so Natalia effectively dealt with the situation.

Someone left a USB flash drive with a keychain of a tennis shoe attached to it. It's in the pink heart basket.

Matt is here messing with computer A again. He is a genius!

I'm mooning all the morning, mourning all the night
and in between it's nicotine and not much heart to fight

Thursday AM

We have a non-trad student named Chris that is working out how to use blackboard to get to the Chinese audio. He is very nice and will probably be in here a lot. Introduce yourself!

We are very low on coffee, so if anyone happens to be going to the store today perhaps they can volunteer to get some? Also, pizza in the viewing room.

Vany came and fixed the sound on the teaching station in the classroom - a cord had become loose.

Wed AM

This very eventful shift started out with a fire drill! Scared the living daylights out of me but fortunately there was no fire. For a while I was standing outside wondering our new coffeepot had inadvertently started one.

The water guy delivered water. Nice guy!

At 10:30 Maria Delgado came in with her 3rd semester Spanish class. I was not aware that she would be here, but we are flexible so together we introduced the students to the LLC, our website, and Atajo. She will also be here at 11:30 and 1:50, so I added those to the gmail schedule.

Then when the students were working on the computers, about half of them suddenly shut off - D and E, and the entire window side of the room. Turned out it was the circuit breaker, but the wonderful WITS people fixed it in a wink.

Posted first blog entry. Any idea how we can make the link to the extended entry say something other than "continue reading (name of entry)"? I would love any feedback or critique!

If you are on computer A, please refer to the paper icon that says "quickpost" in the quick links bar of firefox. That will allow you to post onto any Willamette blog without having to open it in a new window. It will probably save you about ten whole seconds. We can add it to other computers with the link in the movable type main menu.

Messed around on Wordchamp. That program is very nice indeed!!

Don't forget Willamette World News party this afternoon at 4. Please come and have a cookie.

...the earth says hello!

Spent quite a bit of time looking over, under and through Sakai (now named "Scholar" for Willamette). This is a replacement for blackboard that will probably be implemented either next semester or next year. It is free, while blackboard is not, and much more flexible - more like a wiki. Some professors this semester are testing it out, and I'm meeting with Joyce Millen later today to go over some stuff.

Caroline, the German TA, came in to discuss movie night next Wednesday - she will be using either classroom 230 or 235, since Amadou will be in 21.

Helped a girl find french audio files on Blackboard.

A professor unknown to me is transcribing VHS audio using the monitor in the corner.

Thursday AM

The language blogs are set up!

I researched some online German resources, including a fantastic German del.icio.us site, and Natalia and I brainstormed topics for the blog.

The Bank has been set up again - if you can contribute some money now and then we can use it to buy milk and coffee. Thanks!

Wednesday AM continued

Maria Olaya's beginning Spanish class was here for an orientation, and it went very well.

For those of us who are caffeine addicts, the coffeepot has arrived.

Tuesday AM

Natalia is out this morning, at the dentist. She will be back at approximately noon. Wish her luck!

I checked the french programs in classroom 21 - Correcteur is there, Systeme D is there (although there is no sound - is it supposed to have sound?) and Le Petit Robert is not. Oddly enough, the projector continues projecting even when the buttons on the teaching station indicate that it's off.

A non-trad chinese student was in trying to listen to audio files, but he didn't have a willamette login and password yet so he couldn't get into blackboard.

Looked through our German stuff.

Friday morning

Hi all, hope you had a great first week of classes!

Martha Gavilanez came over with questions about blackboard - looks like we'll have to put her three different sections in three different classes, instead of just one.

I finished dividing up the Russian workbook file, and it's all on blackboard now.

Computer A was having troubles playing the Russian CD - it showed up in My Computer, but no amount of clicking would make it open.

Thursday evening

Slow around here. A first-year Russian student came in needing to listen to audio files - however, they weren't the files that we have, and she might have just had them on a DVD at home.

And if Chris pretends to turn on the fans by magic, it's trick.

Wed. 9:00-12:45

Doug is here locking up the webcams so they don't walk away. Good deal.

Today I added the Russian test mp3 files to blackboard, created the textbook exercise mp3 files from Audacity, and added those to blackboard as well. I still have one file left to divide up, but no hurry.

Also, Kevin was in looking at computer O, which appears to have sound card problems. He will be back after lunch to continue his investigations.

There has been talk of acquiring a new coffeepot, hopefully one that turns itself off automatically. If we forgot and left the coffeepot on in the viewing room, the results could be disastrous!

Welcome to fall '07!

Hey all! Glad to see you again (or meet you for the first time) and I'm looking forward to a great year!

I set the alarm off by accident this morning. Remember when you unlock the door to enter the code! If you have forgotten the code, please ask Natalia or another LLCer, and if the alarm goes off, don't panic - but please do call Campus Safety and assure them it's just you.

For the record, we got quite a bit done during our work day yesterday:
-cleaned computers, keyboards, desks, and other surfaces
-moved the bookshelf under the screen in the lab
-continued with cleaning the booth
-organized the black cabinet
...and much more!

shift

From yesterday:
Alex wrote a fantastic program that compresses avi files to a tenth of their former size, so I compressed all the files in the 10 am folder on the span232 drive. Then we copied that folder to a WITS laptop so Professor Covarrubias could pick it up and grade them at home. I also got Zan started on compressing the files for the 9 am folder, which is being stored on the span365 drive for lack of room.

From today:
I am storing my bike in the llc because I forgot my bike lock today. So nobody steal my bike please!

last Monday of the semester!

In the spirit of christmas (and implied Hannukah, Kawanzaa, etc. since we're a multicultural group of people) there are oranges and raw peanuts in the lab and truffles and coffee in the room. If you do not yet have a christmas ornament, come into the LLC and pick out one and put your name on it.

Also remember the LLC party on Friday the 8th at 4 pm! Our parties are legendary, and always have good food and company, except for irish cream chocolates which are gross.

miercoles - mittwoch - that's all I know

Pretty slow day today until 3 when the spanish tutors got here...

Tried to get in touch with Megan about blackboard.

Posted an entry in Atelier blog about my work to date with Blackboard. Will post another entry about other projects later.

I put the unclaimed speakers in the black cabinet - we've decided either they belong to a student, or they came from the PIT room. Who knows?

Monday

Hope everyone had an excellent thanksgiving.

I updated the FAST projects/service requests on the blackboard page
Natalia is installing Roxio on Computer A
Setting up a meeting with Megan to teach her Blackboard stuff
We now have a Christmas tree! It is fake but it looks pretty anyway.

Wednesday afternoon

Got the Fresh Prince external drive out of The Room for a guy - he's working on the project in the PIT lab. The Friends group was also working there but they finished and I put their drive back in The Room.

There are lots of people here including the two lovely spanish tutors.

Gave Natalia a haircut.

I got kicked out of the LLC because Jennifer Covarrubias took over the lab for her class. She even closed the door so I couldn't spy on what they were doing! How sneaky!

Happy monday

Today Professor Bachvarova was supposed to have used one of the other classrooms but it was busy, so she showed her powerpoint in the LLC instead.
Also, FGR came in to cue up a video and later called to say the TV in room 236 wasn' t showing TV5, so together we pushed a lot of buttons and managed to fix it.
Also Adriana and Markus were here.

Nobody came in today at all. I was all by myself.
But as I was leaving Adriana was here to tutor.

Wednesday afternoon

Note to people whose names are showing up wrong on their blog entries: You need to make sure you're logged in as you. As you're writing the entry, look in the top right corner: it should say Welcome (username), then logout. Make sure it's your username and not someone else's!

very slow here today. One guy came in waiting for a Spanish tutor, but he eventually left. The two lovely spanish tutors are here now.

A student, Janel Addicot, is coming between now and 4:10 to try her powerpoint presentation out in room 117. For future reference, the keybox code is TOM.

Amy's shift

1. Natalia and I fixed the no-sound issue on computer A. One of the plugs was misplaced.

2. I helped Miho Fujiwara download Audacity to the Mac in her office, but she needs a microphone, and wants to know if she can borrow one from the LLC. I also helped her get the thingy that allows her to export as an mp3 file.

3. I checked our eleven phone messages. They included seven hang-ups, one call from a retired professor who wanted to learn Hawaiian, one call from the library asking if we had any Japanese materials that we can check out to students, and one call from a lady who wanted a French tutor and a native Danish au pair for her five year-old daughter who is already fluent in English, Danish, French and Norwegian. Most of the messages were from over the summer. For future reference, to check the messages dial 3370, then enter 5492# for both the mailbox and the password.

4. I showed Adriana how to post her first Willamette World News article. Check it out!

5. I tried to add the phone info to the wiki but our page was uneditable, even when I logged in. Does anyone know anything about this?

Monday afternoon

I did two things today that made me feel like a helpful person. First, Prof. Blanco-Arnejo came in and asked me to convert a vhs tape from some foreign format into NTSC. I am currently doing that so no one touch the vcrs if they are playing please! Also Misuzu, a Japanese TA, came in for some help logging into Blackboard. It turned out that the Blackboard system had kicked her out so Cheryl saved the day and entered her information again so she could log in.

Wednesday

The two spanish tutors were here, tutoring. They requested namecards like the LLC picture cards to carry around so their students would know that they are tutors... Natalia said that we can do that but the Spanish department will have to pay for it.

Tried out WordAce German translation dictionary - looks to be quite an improvement over Quelle.

I have the hiccups.

September 13, 2006

Wednesday afternoon

Ana Montero informed me that there is something wrong with the DVD player in the classroom - she thinks it might be the battery to the remote, but she could not get it to work right. I left a note on the workstation to use the dvd drive on the computer if there are problems. Later I got a random dvd and tried it out - it looked as though the batteries had been a little low so I replaced them. We'll see if there are any other issues.

I talked with Natalia and Cheryl about blackboard project with Joyce Millen.

A student called asking what type of Chinese she should download to her computer, because there are many different versions. I checked on our computers and we have PRC Chinese so I advised her to try that one, but confirm it with Prof. Zhang.

Friday evening

Prof. Delgado is in Europe for the next couple days, and her Spanish students all seem to be having some trouble with what she has assigned. One of her students came in because she could not understand the instructions and wasn't sure if she needed to move to a lower level, so I took her to Prof. Gavilanez's office to work something out. She was pretty upset. Another student came in and wanted to do the Spanish assignment, but didn't know what it was because there was no syllabus. It was all kind of a mess.

Also I talked with Elizabeth, who was in here doing Chinese homework.

August 30, 2006

happy new semester everybody.

A group of Spanish students came in and Natalia gave them the Quick Llc Overview Presentation. It was excellent.

Also, Jayleen Morris lost a "web sam" cd for Spanish 131. She thinks she left it here this morning, but it seems to have walked off since then. If you know where it is please email jnmorris.

The key is missing and I had to call campus safety to lock the lab. Please, PLEASE put the key in the basket when you are done with it. Also, the viewing room was unlocked - that needs to stay locked all the time because there is expensive stuff in it.

Last Friday of the year

I got an old-school double tape deck to dub a German book on tape for Amanda.

Again, if French students come in to take the test they should use Firefox; the URL is http://www.willamette.edu/cla/fi/exitexam/.

Wednesday afternoon

Prof. Fofana came in with a movie for Hristo (Tasuma). However he was not sure if Hristo knew to be here, because there was no movie last week. Either way, the movie should be shown in the classroom at 4:40.

Also there were a bunch of guys here watching a soccer game. It was a tie.

A French student came in to take the French exit exam - she had been told by a French faculty member that we are currently offering it. This is not correct: in case anyone else asks, we will not offer the exit exam until Friday.

Monday afternoon

There is yet another group here to do a recording - Chris is taking care of all that.

Goeury-Richardson is watching the french news in the viewing room. I've been having ongoing dialogues with Natalia and Chris about the best way to do her project to digitize all her vhses.

Monday!

I spent most of this morning and this afternoon (I have two shifts today) helping Elizabeth with blackboard stuff, as well as Netscape composer. Students were watching French news in the classroom... no earthshaking news.

The German news is in and ready to record.

friday afternoon

I'm taking Kindra's shift today.

It was a quiet afternoon here in the llc... I was working with Elizabeth, our nontrad student, to figure out why her audio files in blackboard were opening in itunes instead of quicktime. I changed some settings on the computer next to the classroom door; when she comes in next week please direct her there.

Have a lovely weekend....

Friday morning

Hey guys, it's spring cleaning time! The viewing room has gotten a little messy, although not too bad, so I made a short list and put it in the black cupboard. If everyone today could just do one or two things on the list, our cleaning duties will be done.

Have a great weekend.

April 12, 2006

Tuesday early afternoon

The french news is in and recording.

I helped a student find Professor Ward's office on the second floor.

That's about all that happened... I postulate that everyone is outside enjoying the beautiful weather and therefore not hanging out at the LLC, as cool a place as it may be.

Friday morning

Hey everyone... slow morning, nothing much going on.
I need to leave early today... I sent out a shift cover email but apparently no one was able to so I'm locking the llc until Matt comes in at 11.30. I'm really sorry for people who may want to use the lab but it's better than leaving it unstaffed...

March 13, 2006

Monday afternoon

French news recorded fine and German news is in, ready to be recorded.

Today I looked through Spanish dubbing projects from this year and past years for Natalia to show at the upcoming conference.

Also someone left a maroon scarf here that's been here quite a while - does anyone know whose it is?

March 08, 2006

Wednesday afternoon

There were a bunch of guys in here watching a soccer game - and now a bunch of different guys are watching a different game. Is there some sort of tournament on? Is that a dumb question?

French news recorded and is being watched in the viewing room.

Regarding Hristo's email - he thought that the German news had recorded onto Tuesday's French News tape, because the recording was so long - actually, the German news is NOT on there, it had just recorded black until the tape ran out.

Since no one left a post Tuesday evening, I'm not sure whether the German news recorded or not. Either way, today's German tape is in the viewing room, ready to be put in by 5.

Today I scanned a bunch of stuff, ordered a recycling bin from physical plant, helped a guy figure out satellite TV, and generally tidied up a bit.

March 06, 2006

Monday

Today I helped Kindra figure out some stuff for Blackboard and talked with Natalia about a various things.

Happy Monday

This morning when I opened the lab, the door was locked but the alarm was OFF.

Natalia has had a relapse and is feeling sick - she will not be here until this afternoon.

We seem to be missing two grey rolling chairs. Does anyone know where they are?

Today I cleaned all the computer station desks and made a vhs into a dvd for Amanda.

Friday morning

Marianne Fernandez came in looking for the Pink Martini program that we were supposed to have recorded for Professor Courtin-Schreiner. We were supposed to have let her know if we could not recorded it, but we didn't, and she was a bit upset about it. However, it is being rebroadcast on Sunday so Natalia will take care of it.

So for future reference, we cannot record anything off OPB.

We are having problems with playing the audio on tapes on the tv in the classroom so Natalia is trying to get an RCI adaptor which will solve the problem.

Wednesday afternoon

Today at 4:40 Amadou is supposed to have a movie showing in the classroom. However, there is a conflict, so he will be showing it in Smullin 117. We will need to get the key to 117 from Pam BEFORE 4:30, because that's when she leaves. Also, we should put a sign up on the door at about 4pm directing the students to 117.

French news recorded fine and students are watching it. Don't forget about the German news at 6!

Also, Pam called and said she would be giving us a key to the teaching station in room 117 to keep for future use.

Monday morning

Today when I unlocked the lab, the alarm system was off and one of the lights was on.

FYI - Ana Montero left a DVD called "Vacas" in the cabinet a couple of days ago for her students to watch, but it should only be watched in the viewing room - students should not borrow it to take home.

Friday morning

Slow morning. I helped our resident non-trad student save some photos from email and forward some emails.

Helped Amanda figure out the time difference so she could record a broadcast program... she missed it for today but she now has the information for future reference.

Cemile was in to use the webcam through MSN... she got the sound to work, and she could get video from the other end, but they could not see her. Does anyone know why this happens?

February 22, 2006

Wednesday afternoon

-Took the LLC orientation presentation outline that Kindra made and modified it specifically for the Spanish classes.

-The printer kind of broke a little, but I fixed it !!

-The Spanish website has a list of classes, but they're from last semester. I've put this semester's list of classes into a Word document. It's on the LLC drive in the LLC website folder - if someone has some time, could they put it on the site please?

-Also, could someone who knows how to use Skype put a short overview and basic instructions on the LLC Wiki?

-a soccer game is being recorded in the computer almost next to the window

-The French news for today recorded just fine and is in the cabinet.

February 20, 2006

Monday Afternoon

-Helped Natalia move a TV and VCR downstairs. They are now sitting on top of the wooden cart and they work just fine.

VERY IMPORTANT!! We now have splitters. They are in the blue pencil cup on the top shelf of the cabinet for when more than one person wants to watch the news on headphones.

-Hiroko-san was in the viewing room; after she left I set the German news to record at 5 pm.

-I scanned another couple of pages for Amanda. When will it end????

-Can someone tonight please find a time when the classroom is empty to water the plants? The teapot is in the cabinet.

Posted by at 04:18 PM | Comments (0)

Monday AM

As previously mentioned in the angry email, the door was unlocked and the alarm off this morning!
Regarding the soccer video: I picked it up on Saturday. The first half recorded, the second half did not; but that's okay, it's just a game.
I helped a student who wanted to record Russian news for his own use. The segment recorded fine, but he had forgotten to adjust for time zone differences.

February 15, 2006

Wednesday afternoon

-today, no one put in the VHS so the French news has not been recorded. However, it was set to be recorded on the computer in the corner; perhaps we can burn it onto a DVD as we did once before?
-the tape for the German news at 6 pm tonight is in the VCR in the viewing room. If someone uses that room between now and then, please remember to put the tape in again.

-I cleaned the whiteboard; I also put in a request for a vaccuum cleaner from maintainence. Our floor is dirty.
-I put the fish song on Blackboard, once and for all, and it finally works.

Posted by at 02:46 PM | Comments (0)

February 13, 2006

Monday AFTERnoon

-ate a banana
-tried to fix the song on Blackboard that I had previously screwed up; I have it loaded as a wma file but am having trouble figuring out how to load it as an mp3 file. Natalia and I puzzled over this for a while.
-helped professor Fofana with the equipment in the classroom (wait until the light is green!!)
-Hiroko is in the viewing room, presumably viewing something as per the name of it.
-I put the new webcam on the second shelf instead of on the bottom one with the headphones... just in case, because a lot of students are in and out of the cabinet getting headphones.

Tee, could you please take the tapes out of the VCRs in the lab? one is being copied, the other is being copied to. Thanks!

February 10, 2006

Happy Friday!

-uploaded some files onto Blackboard for Amanda
-worked on planning the Spanish version of the orientation

N.B.: Prof. Geoury-Richardson came in to watch Thursday's news; she says that two thirds of the way into it, it looks like it recorded two days at once (two soundtracks are playing at the same time). Could this be caused by either satellite problems, or by reusing the wame video tape too many times?

February 08, 2006

Wednesday afternoon

Today's French News recorded just fine, and there are about four people watching it right now.
I looked through the DVD of the spanish dubbing project that Natalia is going to use at the tech fair today and picked out a good section to show.
I helped Ana Montero with VCR problems in the classroom - it turned out she had forgotten to insert the tape.
I moved the tables. Our feng shui is now greatly improved.
Also, if anyone picked up a CD titled "das doofe fischlied" could you please let me know?
love amy

Sleepy, slow Monday morning

-scanned some worksheets for Amanda
-several months ago I ordered the overview sheets that we didn't have for the Kubus, Prisma and German Scene videos in the viewing room. They finally came so I got everything all organized in the right place.

February 03, 2006

Friday morning

-figured out the deal with the missing DVD: Brady still has not returned it.
-burned the German play onto a CD for Amanda
-uploaded a song about a fish onto the German Blackboard site
-Added the Chinese classes to the list for orientations

IMPORTANT: Lately students have been taking advantage of our friendliness by going into the black cupboard and getting out tapes or even the key without asking us. PLEASE do NOT let them do that... students are not allowed in the cabinet. They need to ask us if they need any tapes or if they need to get into the viewing room.

UPDATE #2

We do, in fact, have today's news: it turns out that it was recorded not at the beginning of the tape, but 15 minutes into it, so if the students rewind all the way they will not see the news.

Posted by at 03:15 PM | Comments (0)

update

I just took a look at today's news and it recorded all snowy. I don't know why this is, because at 1:15 while it was recording I peeked in and saw that the VCR was recording and the TV was on the correct channel.

So if someone comes in wanting to watch Wednesday's news on tape, we don't have it.

Posted by at 03:06 PM | Comments (0)

Wednesday afternoon shift

-Had a planning meeting with Natalia
-posted the fifth and final scene of the German play onto Blackboard for Amanda
-Met a new friend, a guy who had been in China and very kindly made some suggestions to the LLC site, and who agreed to contribute to Willamette World News
-Took Wednesday's tape out of the VCR and put tomorrow's tape on top of it.

Monday morning and afternoon

I spent several hours trying to figure out Amanda's german cassette tape play - I got the first four scenes successfully uploaded onto blackboard and now I'm working on side 2. I'm very proud of myself.

I also scanned a map.

Amy's Friday morning shift

Friday...

-finished all the scanning for Amanda!

-I'm meeting with Hristo at 2 and Amanda at 3 to figure out how to digitize an audio cassette tape

-Prof. Goeury-Richardson and several students were in the viewing room watching the (presumably) Thursday news. According the the blog, it's last week's, but the professor didn't say anything, so I don't really know...

-I put the Friday tape in "VCR 1" (it's connected to the tv on the right) in the booth, and programmed it to start at 1 and stop at 1:30. I think I did it right, but Matt, would you double-check it please? Also, does it matter which channel it is programmed to?

-Regarding recording the news on the computer next to the window: I've put the six days of news that have already been recorded onto the desktop. They can also be found at [C:\Documents and Settings\nshevche\My Documents\Captured Files\Videos]. Although they are Windows Media Player files, PINNACLE SATELLITE TV MUST BE OPEN to view them! Also, it is programmed to record the news every day, so we should be set.

-Today is Mozart's 250th birthday. At 11 am our time, all the bells in Salzburg rang in celebration; I had it playing in the LLC. It was fantastic, and it's too bad I was the only one here to hear it.

January 23, 2006

Monday afternoon 2

-I spent hours and hours today scanning things for Amanda. It was a scanning type of day. Got it almost all done, too.
-Helped Natalia try to find archives of French news on the TV5 website so that students might not have to come in and watch our videotapes; turns out that the transcripts are on the site, but not past broadcasts.
-Researched how to run a discussion board for Amanda and tested out her first one.

Happy Friday

This is a combined today-and-yesterday entry.
-talked with Amanda Boyd about the things she needs done in the next couple weeks (scanning, tape digitizing, make a vhs)
-Chatted with Natalia and ate the candy Dasha sent, brainstormed on yet more ways to improve our lovely new website
-Attempted previously mentioned VHS tape; had to do it twice because my output setting was wrong

For everyone who opens in the morning: please don't forget to unlock room 21 by the stairs, otherwise the classes cannot get it.

Also everyone should come to our World News cookie party today at 3.

Welcome back!

Welcome back guys. Hope you had a great break!

Natalia and I took care of the christmas tree; looks like no one could get in the lab yesterday to clean but things look pretty good anyway. There's a list of stuff to do on the table, if you're not busy and want to cross some things off.

For the next couple days there will probably be a lot of people wandering around confused looking for Walton 21; please tell them that for future reference they should come down the stairs and not through the LLC.

Happy New Year!

Tuesday

Hi.
Today I made up my WITS training on digital video that I missed Friday, scanned the poppy table tent template into illustrator, and spent a while trying to make the video clips for Claudia.

I was having some trouble with the image when using both the VCRs in the classroom - has anyone else had trouble with it?

Also, if you guys saw the pentagon-shaped ball that was next to the Easter Island statue for a while, that's what the "poppy table tent" is. When it's finished it will be an advertising gimmick for the LLC.

shift.

I went through the llc wiki and organized stuff into categories. If you guys could take a look at the wiki and and let me know if you have anything that needs to be added, that would be great. Just go to llc site, atelier and moniters, and click on Willamette seedwiki.

Also helped Professor Noguiera with getting some clips for her film class. This is an ongoing project - I did it on VHS today but it will eventually be in digital form.

shift

Today I:
1. Worked on deciding what food to order from Bon Appetit for the Willamette Worldnews party on Thurday (fruit, cheese, cookies, coffee yay!)
2. Added various instructions to the LLC wiki (how to use Audacity and blackboard, how to record with adobe audition, etc)
3. Messed around with recording in Audacity for Blackboard
