Andy's 6-8

Russian movie/potluck in WLT21, and a spanish movie in B18.
There were a few people in and out, and Carolina is now tutoring here.
Checked and corrected a few grammatical errors in the WWN.

Andy's 10:10-11:30

Audrey came in asking for a PAL VCR cassette tape, but we could not find one labeled as such. (America is apparently the only country to require you to label PAL cassettes, and we have mostly foreign films, so we could not tell) They will try another method.

A few people in the lab using the computers, two skype conversations going on!

Andy's 6-7

Quiet shift, Sascha came to drop the key off, no other visitors.

Posted by byavuz at 07:00 PM

Andy 11:30-12:30

Japanese tutoring was going on for a little while, and I checked with Eri to see if she needed any help with the blog.
Edited the WISE sign up for Spanish dubbing and made sure we would get notified if anyone signed up.

November 15, 2009

Andy's 6:30-11

A Spanish dubbing group was here. Since no one else was here, they used the mounted microphone instead of the headsets. They knew what they were doing and didn't need any help.
I reloaded the printer paper, and the printer seems to be low on ink.

November 12, 2009

Andy's 11:30-12:30

Tried to convert the movies for the Spanish dubbing from .avi to .mp4, but handbrake kept quitting. The reason is so that a group could work on the macs, if anyone knows how to make it work that would be great.
Also looked over the form for the new llc, and made some suggestions for that.

Took screenshots of PCTV, Tell Me More, and Skype. These are in my folder in the LLC drive, and will go up on the TIUA blog. I had a problem getting an image to show up on the PCTV screen as I was taking a screenshot, so if anyone knows how to do that please let me know!

Andy's 11:30-12:30

Helped with the tail end of the Spanish Dubbing. Found out that in moviemaker you can't use the headphones for input while using the speakers for output at the same time.
Also put up my schedule on the spanish wise site.
Unpublished a world news story that accidentally published.
Also discarded an old pudding package that was on the bookshelf.

Andy's Shift

Pretty quiet night, there was a study abroad meeting in B17. Someone apparently forgot something, but came back to retrieve it.

Posted by anave at 07:57 PM

Andy's 10-11:20

Watched a Keynote presentation from another language lab, got some ideas for our own if we create one.
-Include excerpts from the Spanish dubbing project, and convince other language classes to do similar video projects so we can show them.
-Movie reviews and clips of foreign films that we have here and at the library.
-Interviews with international students and students who were abroad.
-Interviews with professors
-If there are any upcoming culture/language classes that are especially interesting, interview the professor about them.
-Videotape any cultural events that happen on campus, so that we have some stock to pull from.

Tried to figure out what was causing the glitch with the Spanish videos (2&4 were not displaying correctly in moviemaker) Looked around online, but could not find anything specific to the situation. Audry may have found something, she is checking it out on another computer to see if it works.
An international student was looking at Tell Me More English, he did not have much time but just wanted to take a quick look. Carolina was here tutoring as well.

Andy's 1:40-12:40

Checked out the headphones with Sascha and Natalia, we figured out that they need to be set in whatever program you are using. So, if you're using audacity go into preferences and make certain the input is set to USB Audio (2). For the moviemaker, go into the narration screen, then click on show details, and confirm that the USB Audio (2) is selected.

A student from Uggen's 3rd year class was asking about the My Spanish Lab as well, and he was being tutored by Carolinea (spelling?) Natalia showed them wordchamp, as they just needed to practice verbs.

Andy's Shift Wednesday

New Headphones! They work great, but we could not figure out how to work the noise-reduction microphones. It could just be that we need to adjust the mic location, but there is also a mystery button under the volume adjuster...there's no documentation on their site as well.
Also checked out the WISE site for the Spanish video class.
Frank came in around 11:10, he will be here until noon.

Tuesday 2-4

Talked with Natalia about the language blogs, we discussed what would be most effective.
I think that having the language blogs might not involve very many people, so we talked about combining the blogs into one single "language blog" where we could just post whatever came to mind.
We could post both language-specific and non-specific items, and just tag accordingly.
I think that this would make it much more active and interesting, what does the rest of the LLC think?

Took a look at voicethread again, now it seems to work...would others mind making accounts and trying to add me as a friend? I would like to test out how the comments work some more.
Also started going through the boot camp manual to try to find some chinese resources.

Made a short presentation using voice thread. The presentation works fine, but I can't seem to add friends and send it. If anyone knows how it works, please let me know.
* It seems comments work, but I needed to make the voicethread public and search for it with another account.

Placed RSS feeds of Language blogs, World News, and Events onto the WISE sites of language professors who requested them. The list of professors and their class numbers are in the llc hard drive. The Javascript I generated did not work for some reason, but copying the code from the My Language Space did.
Also added an announcement to the sites with new RSS feeds, the text for this is also in the LLC drive.

2-4 Tuesday

Helped reconnect an H drive

I tried placing RSS feeds on classes for teachers who had requested them, but could not find the classes on WISE. The list of classes is in the LLC drive, in an excel document under a folder called WISE classes RSS

When you want to post a RSS feed onto wise, just follow these steps: (taken from Megan's post)

It is possible to put RSS feeds on WISE through HTML, and you don't have to be an expert to do it. Just go to this site: http://itde.vccs.edu/rss2js/build.php, fill out the form, and click Generate JavaScript. When the code is generated, copy it. Now go to the Home section in WISE and click on Options under Site Information Display. Click on the Source button (the first button above the text box) and paste the code into the text box. Then click Update Options.

The power was restored, it was just the fuse again. The guy from maintenance said he would be back tomorrow during normal hours to check it out and see if there is a problem.
Wise also seems to work, just the RSS feeds for Spanish and Japanese have a problem: It shows code rather than the feed. The others, Chinese and German, look like they are fine.

Thursday

Nice shift, hope everyone's finals are going well.
Talked about the independent learner stuff with Natalia, I will post a quick summary of that in the extended entry so please read it.

Some Ideas:
-Instead of a separate Independent learner page, place a link under each language in the "Language Resources" menu.
-Add a "other languages" or "unoffered languages" section in the "Language Resources" drop down menu to include languages that are not offered.
-Re-organize all the language sections, recheck the links, etc.
-Add an about page or add to the information on the main page.

Any ideas or suggestions? I think this will work well but I also tend to get tunnel vision when I work on things...

Wed 11:30-3

Quiet shift, some people came to watch movies in the small viewing room, Scott came to study Spanish.
Worked with HandBrake, I'll talk about it in the extended entry.

HandBrake can be a bit tricky, I'll write down what I did here;

1. After starting HandBrake up and putting the DVD in, click the browse button next to the source menu, and select the folder called VIDEO_TS, it will be under the DVD.
2. Then select the chapters you want to encode; I found it easiest to open the DVD in wmp and play the file I wanted, it will show you what chapter it is on the right-hand side.
3. Select the destination, and choose what file type you want to save it as. I used .avi
4. Then you need to choose your output preferences. I wasn't sure on these, but ended up settling on "H.264" for the encoder (The filesize was bigger than XviD), and "MP3" for the audio encoder. (The computers don't have the codec to play AAC, so the movies won't have any sound if you choose AAC.)
5. Chris suggested changing the "Constant Quality" under the "Video Settings" tab to 100%.
6. Hit "Encode Video," It seems to take around 30-60 minutes to do this, I had to go before it finished so I'm not sure though.

I'm not sure if these are the best settings for editing with Elements, If you need to change something I suggest just encoding a single chapter at first to try it out. (It's a lot quicker)

Wed 11:30-3:00

Talked with Natalia about Winpitch, the programming seemed a bit sketchy when I tried it out. Helped add comment boxes on the World news, and read through the posts.
Amadou dropped off a video for the French class, and asked that Kelsey take attendance. I put the video on the whiteboard and wrote a note just in case.

7-9 Thursday

Tried burning the DVDs, but the "that 70s show" disk appears to be blank, and when I tried to burn the Office DVD, an error screen came up and the blank disk I was burning to became finalized with nothing on it, for some reason...Is anyone here good with DVDs? I don't have much experience burning them.

Other than that, a good shift.

11:30-3:00 Wed

Busy day, configured Chinese input on all the computers, and poked around with the web mail language settings.

Maria Blanco (not sure if the spelling is right) wanted some DVDs copied by tomorrow (The office and That 70s show) I didn't know exactly how to do it, so put the DVDs in the cabinet. She also asked about a CD polisher...do we have one?

Tell me more CJ has been installed for all computers, and works as long as you have the CD.

If anyone has some spare time, could they look at sending main via webmail in different languages? To send and receive in Chinese you need to change the display settings (options->display preferences) For some reason you can look at Japanese characters while set to read Chinese, but when set for Japanese some characters were incorrect.

Also had some questions about the language blogs, but I'll put it in the extended entry section...

Is there any way to see how many people visit the blogs? From what I have heard not many people seem too motivated to look at them, and Willamette being a small school we may not be reaching many people. If this turns out to be true, we may want to work the blogs into our site a bit more (perhaps make a webpage on all the technical aspects of learning a language, and then make a separate forum/blog for experiences and questions people may have.)

As if to contradict what I was just writing...someone came in wanting to study French on her own! whoo! Ended up deciding to audit a French class, but still cool.

Friday!

Quiet shift, talked with Misuzu about the tell me more programs, and set up times for the Japanese classes to come in for orientation (should be on the calendar). A spanish class came in for orientation towards the end, natalia helped them with atajo.

Thur. 7-9

Seemed like there was a problem with scheduling for Walton 21, two people showed up to watch a german movie and there was a group already inside...I let them into the small viewing room. A few other people came to do homework, pretty quiet shift.
Typed up my Language Blog post, but would like to look it over before posting it. (It's on my H drive right now)

Wed 11:30-3:00

Interesting day, two classes came in during my shift, Amy introduced the 11:30 one for me, and I helped the 1:50 class. There was a problem with the breaker during the first class (and the class before that) but the second class had no problems.

Thursday evening

My first post!
Campus Safety was walking around when I arrived, apparently an alarm went off somewhere in Smullin, everything seemed ok though.
I played around with the Japanese version of the tell me more software, it looked like it would be a very useful tool. (I'd like to try the chinese one next)
Natalia checked in and added me to the language blogs.
Other than that, it was a quiet shift...
