LLC http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/ 2010-03-19T17:16:45-08:00 Hayley 2//5 http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/hayley_25_2.html When I arrived Maria Delgado was here trying to answer some questions about her VoiceThread presentation.
I created a presentation about Mexico and played with the different recording/writing options. I didn't have any specific questions about how to use the program the VideoTutorial that Natalia sent out was very useful.
Quote of the day: Salem is raw.

Olga's 9 am - 2 pm http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/olgas_9_am_2_pm.html Covered a bunch of ahifts today.
Russian class came in the morning, and it all went well.
Derek came to show the templates he created for Wordpress. That tool looks really powerful, will be cool when we can transfer all blogs to wordpress
Sara came, brought audio tapes to be converted and burned to CD. The material is for Russ333 class, and she also wants a copy of the audio on the WISE site for the class. She requested 5 CDs with the converted audio.
Other than that, it was very quiet here. People are already enjoying the spring break!

Andy's Shift 9:00-10:30 http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/andys_shift_900.html The Russian class was in doing recordings, and they did not have any significant problems. Apparently the DL recorder can't always read save files that have a save name written in Cyrillic, so if in doubt try using a different layout for the name.

Marta Friday 8-9am http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/marta_friday_89_3.html Prepared the 8 computers for Russian Class recordings. The computer under Africa and "my" computer next to the Macs do not playback through headphones. The African one no playback at all after I tried different Control Panel - Sounds - Audio - Output Options. And the one next to the Macs only did playback through the monitors' speakers. So they do not have headsets on them today. Even computers without the language options that have been recently re-imaged have functioning DL Recorder. I tested them all.

Megan I:3O-Z:3O http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/megan_i3oz3o.html The lab is very busy today. Several students are here on computers or with tutors. The PC under Alaska on the world map was having trouble with Adobe Flashplayer. I'm not sure if it was already installed or not, but things requiring Flashplayer won't load and it wouldn't let me download Flashplayer from the site. Is that the computer that was re-imaged not too long ago?

I forgot to post an entry last night for my shift, but I was able to somewhat fix the mouse for the Mac closest to the air con. The down scrolling works now, though it isn't always smooth. I basically just turned it upside-down and rolled it around on a piece of paper for a long time. Unfortunately the same technique did not work for the other mouse.

The problem is that there is dirt stuck somewhere underneath the ball of the mouse. Usually rolling it around upside-down loosens the dirt and fixes the problem. If anyone has any other ideas, feel free to try it. For the record, I also tried using compressed air and a damp napkin.

Andy's 9:00-12:30 http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/andys_9001230_1.html There was a Japanese class in here today, they just researched online. I got the serials for the three computers without language input, and sent those to Natalia. Hopefully they will be fixed soon, we discussed using the administrator log in to access the language bar.

Zack was here, and we printed out copies of the Russian keyboard so that students tomorrow can see what the lay out is. Natalia, Zack, and I discussed how to integrate the Chinese Language Blog further, and try to generate more feedback.

Yi Chuan came as well, and we worked with Natalia to figure things out about the TIUA open house event. Also, we touched on how squirrels behave as pets.

Here is a link to the Amherst guide to Word Champ, as a resource we can perhaps find ideas from it.

Zack 10-12 http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/zack_1012_2.html Prof. Fujiwara's class came in to work on their projects. After they had left Natalia came in and we made a print out of the Russian keyboard set up. We talked about sending an email to the Chinese faculty about Brown Bag and the Chinese blog. I began drafting the email.
Yichuan came in for his second shift, so with Andy, Thursday mornings are going to be run by Chinese speakers.

Tuesday - Evin's 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm Shift http://blog.willamette.edu/people/nshevche/llc/2010/03/tuesday_evins_7_4.html Productive, yet quiet shift. No visitors which led me to believe they've all departed on early Spring Break?

Anyways, let's get down to business. Messed around with VoiceThread quite a bit today...uploaded two videos of the web short "Diez Minutos," which Maria Delgado requested in the brown bag event this past week. Although I wasn't at the event, I was aware of the video because I was in her SPAN-232 class last term when we watched it. Unfortunately, when we went to watch part two of the video, it had been taken down due to copyright concern.

Since VoiceThread gives you the option to make your shares/posts public, I made the two uploads private and produced a secure URL. In the process of these uploads, I realized a few things. #1: VoiceThread caps free-account users to 25 MB (megabyte) uploads which means that not only did I have to download and convert the video file from YouTube, but I also had to re-size it using Handbrake...which brings me to my next PoC (point of clarification)....#2: when using Handbrake for re-sizing videos, you have many options for resizing, slicing, converting, and downsampling. In this case, it was necessary to re-size the video to meet VoiceThread's 25 MB cap. I found the MP4 video file to be uploaded to VoiceThread much better than an MPEG or other file format.
