The lab has been mostly empty today. Sydney came in. Also, Indira came in looking for Natalia.
I covered a shift, and talked with Andy and Jessa today. I started trying to digitize some audio tapes to CDs. I also wanted to digitize a video, but we are out of blank DVDs, so I think I will pick some of those up tomorrow morning. Other than that, I talked to Maria about the Sp Placement Exam a bit, spent a bit of time brainstorming, and tried to find humorous language videos on youtube.

Kelsey's morning
It was just Jose and me this morning. I talked with him a little about the video project, which he is burning right now.
I read through letters to TAs and faculty that Natalia sent me. I also finished cleaning out the managerial documents on my H-drive.
Jessa, when do you leave? It would be good to meet in person one more time. Otherwise, a phone conversation will work fine.
As an aside...I am really going to miss the LLC!

Morning Shift
Maria Blanco's class was in to use the computers. Also, one of the women from the ICL group next door came in asking about accessing a program (she will come back when there isn't a class in the lab).
I sent Zan home because she's sick. :( Then I worked on reviewing the Spanish Placement Exam, set up the lab for Blanco's class and worked on composing lab documentation.
The second computer on the right of the black cabinet is not working. After the class leaves, the cords need to be checked to make sure it's plugged in. Also, the woman will be back later to find out how to use a language program online (she did not say which program).

1. Sydney was here working. Another student used the computers while I was here
2. I started adding documentation about things that I have done over the years to the WIKI. I also tried Rosetta Stone again. I have decided to give up that fight and let WITS handle that SNAFU.
3. If any expertise about WISE that you think might be helpful to people who are learning the tool, please add your tips to the WIKI.

This morning was Eri's first shift (the LLC's new intern). I gave her an orientation to the lab, told her what we do and why, showed her the facilities and hardware, the usual. We also talked a bit about what her area of focus will be.
I also uploaded Inspiration on the Macs.

Kelsey's shift
Today was fairly eventful. Elizabeth was Skyping. A student named ___ Rising came in to use Rosetta Stone to make up for missing Spanish class. A few other students were doing homework in the lab.
Natalia and I started scheduling Eri (the LLC intern from TIUA) meetings with the staff for next week.
We tried to look at the Contact page on Dreamweaver, but it wasn't working on the Macs, and the PCs were all automatically updating again.
Please remember that there are explicit expectations in the manual and in the blog that explain cleaning schedules for the lab. Tasks are assigned based on the time of your shift each day. Everyone should review this. It is in the black binder under the air conditioner.

Premier Elements Dubbing--expansion of Howie's wonderful doc
Below are the brief steps that I take to do it:
Make sure the computer is on the following settings in the Control Panel: audio playback and audio recording should be set to the USB headsets, not USB device
- Import the video file following these steps (FILES -->GET MEDIA FROM-->FILES AND FOLDERS)
- Drag the video clip to the timeline
- In order to cut clip, select the place you want to cut on the timeline and click the scissors icon to the right of the play menu
- Turn off the sound on the clip
------right click on the clip in the timeline, and select Show Properties
------select Volume from the menu on the right
------drag the clip volume to zero
- Also turn off the sound on the sound bar under the monitor
- Play and pause the video clip to the scene where you want to dub your voice
- Click on "Add narration" button on the right
- Make sure "Mute audio while recording" is checked
- Click on the Record button on the "Narration" menu
- Wait till it says "Start Recording 1 --> Recording..." and start dubing your voice
- After you're done dubing the video clip, exporting the new video clip by going to FILES -->EXPORT -->MOVIE
-Save the file in AVI type
- Burn the AVI file into DVD using POWER2GO EXPRESS

I know that this is kind of small, but I think it would be a good idea to make the navigation bar on the WWN, LLC, and WU Abroad pages more systematic. I know that the WWN has a different set of links than the other two pages. It looks really great! You're awesome.

I corresponded with FGR about her video project a bit...hopefully we can get everything worked out fairly soon.
Also, please do not neglect your shift duties! The plants have been feeling awfully unloved due to lack of water lately. Also, the lab has been staying pretty untidy. 8-(

11/26 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
I realize that this is probably review for most if not all of us, however, it is important that we all know and understand how to do this:
Opening the Servers:
1. Login with your Willamette username and password
2. Select MyComputer from the Start Menu
3. If the LLC drive does not appear, you will need to map the network drive:
a. Go to Tools > Map Network Drive
b. Select an empty drive and type \\home\llc into the textbox labeled “folder”
c. Select Finish
d. Enter your Willamette username and password if prompted to do so
This is the main server for the Language Learning Center. It contains all of the folders with faculty and assistant projects, the homepage, and all other program folders. Do NOT delete or rearrange any files on the server without permission. Save any LLC work you do to your personal assistant folder or to the corresponding project folder.
Opening H-drives on PCs:
I. My Computer: this is an option if you are on a computer that is connected to the Willamette University network
- see above for details on how to use this option
II. FTP: this option will allow you to access data on your H-drive from any computer with internet access (keep in mind that while you can download from the H-drive this way, you cannot upload data to the home directory via ftp)
a. Open a web browser
b. Type ftp://username@willamette.edu (where username is your Willamette username) into the address bar and press enter/return
c. You will be prompted for your Willamette password
d. The contents of your home directory will appear as a list of files in the web browser window
e. You can select the files you wish to download (you may be prompted to input your password each time you open a new folder)

I was at the WITS help desk for all of my shift. I took FGR's external hard drive up there, and they formatted it for me. So, hopefully, it will let me add the files from our hard drive.
I also scanned some articles for professor Nickbakht. His originals are in a large manila envelope that I put in the black cabinet. So, if he comes by to pick them up, that's where they'll be. 8-) Thanks.

11/19 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
Answering the Phone/Taking Messages/Voicemail
The LLC assistant on duty is responsible for answering each incoming phone call professionally. A good model to follow is “Language Learning Center, this is (your name). How may I help you?” Answer all messages responsibly, writing down any names, requests, or phone numbers. If the caller has questions that you are unable to answer, that pertain to the LLC, refer him/her to Natalia. If the caller has questions that do not pertain to the LLC, do your best to help and provide him/her with the number of the main Willamette switchboard, 503-370-6300.
The phone does not light up when there is a message in voicemail, so the morning shift should always check for messages when starting your shift. To listen to messages, one needs to dial the code 3370 and for the mailbox and password enter 5492# for both. Then one simply follows the instructions given. The message phone codes are written on the telephone in the office for your convenience.
Using Proofing Tools:
It is likely that, as an assistant in the LLC, you will be asked to help with using word processing proofing tools.
To use Proofing tools in other languages in Word, you have a couple of options. First, if the language is supported by the Office XP language pack, you can select the language you wish to write in from the language menu in the toolbar on the bottom right of the screen. If the language is not supported here, there is another option. After the text is written and you need to spell check your document, go to the edit menu and “select all.” This will highlight all of the written text. Then go to the tools menu and scroll down to the language setting > a submenu should appear to the side > then click the “set language” function > a menu of different languages should then be available > select the language you wish to type in. When you are ready to spell check your document, highlight the portion you wish to check with the mouse, then either click on the “ABC” icon, or go into the tools menu and click on “spelling and grammar.”

I worked with FGR's videos. I was having trouble syncing her hard-drive to ours, though. It stopped in the middle of the transfer and said that it could not finish without deleting files. So, I tried to delete the old files and it says that it is restricted. I'm unsure what to do. If anyone knows what's up with this, please let me know.
Fofana's French Film Discourse class is watching a movie.
A young man came in looking for a VCR on which to watch a Halloween movie....I told him that there are other rooms in Walton with VCRs, but that they lock them.
Please, take a look at the cleaning schedule I posted on the blog (I blieve it was Tuesday?) and make sure that you are doing your scheduled clean-up!!! Thanks! Hope you're all having a Happy Halloween!!!

10/29 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
G. Correspondence
Communicate:
1. At the beginning of each shift, make sure to check the LLC blog and your email. These are the most important means of communication between co-workers, management and Willamette staff.
2. If you are asked to do something during your shift, or asked a specific question, please respond specifically to this in your shift blog (i.e. “I finished installing Atajo 4.0, and it is working on all PCs")
3. At the end of each shift, you are responsible for posting a blog for the LLC staff.
--- This should inform others of special incidents, problems or questions which came up during your shift. Blogs should also let the person after you know if there is something they need to get done and what you accomplished during your shift. Even if this is just to state that the lab was quiet it is important to keep updated on other students’ projects, problems and solutions, and everyday events.
--- Your blog entry should also include the names and projects of individual students who came in to use the lab.
4. The LLC email address is llc@willamette.edu.

10/15 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
E. Satellite Recordings
In the Language Lab, we receive international broadcasts. From these channels, we record news and entertainment programs from around the world. These programs are used for classroom and entertainment. These can be recorded onto VHS using one of the stations in the lab or the small room, or they can be downloaded via PCTV on any computer in the lab. The following are instructions on doing this.
Setting the VCRs in the LLC and Walton 21:
1. Use the remote control for the correct VCR.
2. Press program/check button once: you should be in a screen where the channel, date, time on, and time off are selected
3. Select the appropriate channel with the CH up and down arrows, the channels are listed on the sheet taped to the station
4. Next, select the date for individual recordings choose the appropriate date
5. Select time on in military time (and make sure it is Pacific Time); for example 3pm is 15:00 in military time. Please allow 5 minutes of leeway, for example if recording starts at 5:30 pm select 17:25 as the start time 6. Select time off, similarly to the start time: military time and leeway.
For example, if end time is 6pm, select 18:05 as the off time.
7. Press Timer Rec button to save the setting.
8. Press menu button to go to the main page.
9. To check your set ups press the program/check button twice
To program the VCR in The Room:
1. on the VCR remote control, press “Input Sel.” to get to a blue screen. Then press “Menu.”
2. the menu screen has different categories listed on the left. with the arrow button, click down to “Prog,” and on the screen that comes up, click on “Standard.
3. on this screen, set the program channel, day, and time for the show you want to record.
4. Now, press “return” on the remote, and the television will tell you to turn off the VCR. Don’t worry, go ahead and do it; the VCR will take care itself. I was worried too, at first, but it worked out fine.
Recording from PCTV:
1. Open PCTV on one of the PCs in the lab
2. Select the appropriate channel
3. Select the Record button (the small red dot on the bottom menu) 4. When the program is done recording, select record again to end the recording.
5. When recording has ended, the Gallery should open (if it does not, select the button with five boxes on it--it is two to the right of the record button)
6. You can either view the clip on this computer, or you can burn it to VCD or DVD
7. To burn, simply select the media type you are working with and the "Burn" button

- Natalia holds the password to access the LLC webpage. If you need to upload something onto the page, please email the webmaster. He/she will be able to do it for you.

Good Morning ya'll! Happy Friday!
The clipboard is on top of the black cabinet. Whenever you use it, you should make sure to put it back there, so it'll be easy to find for the next person!
For some reason, the DVDs are not being read on Comp. A. We checked The Office on comp D, and comp O and it worked on Wednesday. I am not sure about "that 70s show" though. I tried copying The Office again...but we need a blank disc.

Kelsey's Shift 6-9
I came in early to start the video for Fofana's African Film Discourse. I also passed around an attendance sheet for him. 8-P
I installed Roxio Media Creator on Computer O. While I was trying to burn the DVDs for Maria Blanco, the monitor quit working. I checked the connections, and they appear fine, but it still isn't working. I'm not really sure what is going on there? But there was a service request submitted.
Amy, can you take Maria Blanco's discs in to Chris to be copied, please?
Worked on compiling a list of projects we've done...there are lots!

9/17 Weekly Lab Tid-Bits
This week: Closing Procedures
1. Close all outside doors to the lab.
2. Post information about your shift on the LLC blog
3. Shut down all lab computers (if you are closing for the night)
4. Straighten the lab, and wash dishes
5. Close and lock all windows
6. Retrieve key and faceplate from the pink basket in the cabinet
7. Close and lock the door between Walton 21 and the lab (this door and the main door must be closed before setting the alarm), then turn out the lights, and set the alarm in the computer lab before leaving.
8. Leave the lab, lock the door with the key, and return key to the box on the front of the door with the faceplate secured over it.
As for my shift...I fixed the links to the Wlt 21 sched and the Lab sched. I also made some small edits to the language blogs. Those are awesome guys! Great work!

Monday Morning
The Walton 21 google sched. should be up on the website now. Let me know if there is anything that needs to be fixed on there. Also, I tried fixing the problems with the lab assistant sched. I think I worked everything out, but let me know if there are any more problems. 8-)

Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm
Going on 37 hours! That is not a good thing...I am not proud. I want sleep. In the meantime, however, this is what I've been up to:
I added the staff schedule to the LLC page. The link is:
http://willamette.edu/wits/llc/schedules/LLCschedule.htm
Please check your schedule and make sure that you are not missing your shifts. It is very important that if you are going to be unable to make it (and have a good reason for the absence), you find someone to cover your shift. This calendar does not have shift covers listed on it. That is an option, however, and I will talk about that at the training tomorrow. If everyone is interested in doing that, I will explain how it is done.
I am also going to start posting/emailing weekly tidbits from our Lab Assistant's Manual. There are a lot of really handy (and crucial) factoids about making the LLC run smoothly in there.
Also, Florence and 3 French students were in WLT 21 for a French movie night. Yay!!

Kelsey and Beyza
We had a pretty eventful shift. Two non-traditional students came in with queries, as well as one PCTV viewer. Other than that, we met with Natalia, and played a bit of phone tag. 8-)

Kelsey's Shift
Need to make list of all Foreign Language classes, to keep track of which have come in and which have not.
I installed Tell Me More SI Plus on computer A (I believe that this includes English, Spanish, French, and German). I also installed Tell Me More Arabic. I think that Chinese and Japanese still need installation, along with audio CDs.

Stuff for fixin'
Matt wanted a list of things on the image that need to be fixed:
GoogleEarth
Le Petit Robert - shortcut needs to be fixed, so people can access it without having to map the drive
Tell Me More
New Tell Me Mores
Dreamweaver CS3 says "KeyAccess must be running in order to use this keyed program" when I try to run it. (same under admin)

Good Morning Sunshine!
8-9am shift
Just a heads up, please try to clean your dishes after you use them. This morning, I cleaned a coffee mug and a glass out that were left in the LLC. I also had to throw away a container of left-overs that has been in the fridge since we went to breakfast (8-/).
It was pretty quiet...I met with Natalia, had some coffee, contemplated the universe...

Kelsey again 12:45-3pm
Natalia checked out a digital still-shot camera from WITS, for use on LLC projects. She will be keeping in her office for the semester. If anyone needs it, talk to her. I finished updating the WLT 21 schedule for Fall 07 classes.
Maria Olaya met with Natalia, and they discussed using Wikis for a class effort in her SPAN 260 Literature and Translation class
Installed Korrektor Plus on computer G

Kelsey's Shift 8-9am
It was a good morning. I showed a few freshman how to get around to WLT 21 w/out going through the LLC. The webcams are currently in the process of being anchored to the computers. And I started editing the WLT 21 schedule on the webpage. I'll finish that when I come in later today. I hope everyone has a great day!

Kelsey's Shift 7-9pm
It was an evening shift, so it was pretty relaxing down here....thankfully, it wasn't too hot either. I emailed the classics faculty. I also fixed the links on the Students resources page of the LLC website.

Kelsey's Shift 11:30-12:30
The Classics faculty came in and Natalia and I introduced them to the wonder that is Latina 4.0....ooooooh-ahhhhhhh. Mary had already seen Gramma, so I didn't get to show that one off *tear*. Oh well, it went splendidly! Yay Classics!
Research Italian internet feeds.

FGR Project
Rositsa is leaving, so here are her notes that need to be passed along to the LLC assistant(s) who are going to take on this project. She did not include the instructions on digitizing the video, and was hoping that Jessa could fill in this portion.
http://www.willamette.edu/~kherb/FGR.doc
Oh, and here is an email with important info from FGR:
"I checked all the processed video and some of the clips need to be cut
and in some cases, the titles need to be changed or the spelling
corrected. See the attached page."

Spanish 232 Production issues
Some advice/concerns that came out of J. Covarrubias' 06-07 courses:
1. don't put two groups from the same class on computers next to each other (it gets too crowded when the whole class is congregated around 3 adjacent computers)
2. stress that video must all be saved/exported into same project file
3. if they do not do this, save by:
a. export as Windows Media File
b. save to desktop
c. add media to project

Foreign Language Placement Tests
Schools which are using CAPE
American University
Eastern Michigan University
University of Tulsa
Colorado State University
Alternatives:
MLPA: Minnesota Language Proficiency Assesments - assess reading, writing, listening, and speaking in French, German and Spanish (I'm not sure, but I don't think that this is an online exam, though)
FastTEST Professional Testing System - Version 2.0
LACS - This is a group that creates software for learning. I was unable to learn if they develop testing software independently, but I think that it is worth another look. The programs can also be developed for internet use.
