Residual good feelings from the party seeped into the LLC this morning. Lots of jolly people hanging out, listening to music and of course, doing very important demanding work.

Blog Presentations

Prof. Olaya's class came into the LLC where Natalia gave them a spectacular presentation on how to work the blogs. A few people were in using Skype and doing other homework. I believe another class will come for a blog intro at 11:30.

Printing blues

I picked up a new printer cartridge from the WITS office, however upon its installation, the printer developed some sort of immunodeficiency and now would rather print out 14 pages of black paper than the one page word doc it was asked to attend to. If any one knows what is going on here, please help!

Also, I made some copies for Tatiana, which are sitting on the table waiting for her to pick them up later in the day.

Prof. Blanco's class was in working for a while, seemed very productive. Natalia is working on installing the BibleWorks hardware that just arrived, very exciting for the Hebrew students among us., I'm sure. I finished editing the language blogs which are all posted!

Natalia submitted a service request to mount the new LLC sign. A drawing of where the sign should go is on the table, if the service folk stop by. If you feel passionate about sign placement, please feel free to comment.

There was lots of successful Skyping going on; it was quite exciting to hear the goulash of languages. I worked blissfully on the language blogs in their midst.

Beer Mapping anyone?

Natalia was showing me some of the valuable things she learned while away with the ambassadors...many of which involve a wide variety of mapping technologies. People have mapped everything. You want ETs? We have UFO maps. You need a bathroom? Pee Maps. Thirsty? Beer Mapping is the way to go. It is pretty amazing. We are in the process of saving these tools on the LLC H drive in a folder labeled NITLE docs. Feel free to check it out.

Test of Facial Expressions

Worked on the language blogs, by the way, for those writing, I realized I asked that the next blogs be finished by 3/28, which is during Spring Break. Haha, just have them done by the monday after Spring break. I also talked blogs with Natalia and Jessa. Lizzy and Lindsay worked on Spanish Rosetta and PCTV.

For the latest on cultural differences, check out this article on East and West Part Ways in Test of Facial Expressions

The llc was hoppin. Paul and his TAB group used The Room to watch a movie. Misuzu and some Japanese students watched their movie in walton 21. We had to ask another group of people, who were in the classroom to find another place to watch their movie! must not be midterm week. I ate beer bread in the llc and enjoyed the busyness.

Happy Pi Day!!

I hope everyone plans to enjoy the mathematical celebrations! A blog update for the last few days.
Tues: Helped Yuka send video files through blackboard; Wed: Set up the lab for the WU meeting room for Prof. McCreery, which I believe went well.

Also, Rosemarie Maurer's German class will be coming in next Wednesday, 3/19, from 9:30 until 10:10 to watch a movie in the LLC--Heiki, I think this would fall on your shift.

rubber rooms

Made copies for Prof. Yashchenko, helped Elizabeth with some audio problems, turning up the volume did the trick. I listened to a fantastic episode of This American Life called "Human Resources" yesterday, the rubber room it mentioned was quite unbelievable. Here is the link if you feel inclined to listen.

Celebrated Estonian freedom by experiencing appropriate political rhetoric and conversing with Heiki and Michal. Lucia and I also discussed our plans to give the Atajo corporate propaganda movie a face lift by creating a much more enjoyable (and less consumeristic, perhaps) version via captivate.

Heads up...

Students from Rosemarie Maurer's class may be coming in to watch movies in the Viewing Room.

Also, on Sunday Bill and I attempted to compromise with Computer A to convince it to stop with the strange amounts of spam/spyware/viruses that seem to think they have found a home there. I'm not sure our attempts were completely successful, but we did find 201 threats in the first minute of our search. Carter is supposed to be coming in soon to take a closer look.

Marta, Elizabeth and Ty were in studying. Wits people came to work on Computer K. I made coffee.

“That’s America,” he continued. “Canada got the French. Australia got the convicts. We got the Puritans and we never got over it.”

Heiki was not of help to a French student, but she thanked him anyway. This spurred an interesting debate between Lucia, Heiki and I on the role and value of politeness. I think we concluded that politeness is necessary and kind in some instances, and creates unnecessary boundaries in others. Please feel free to comment. Also, the New York Times recently published an article on a device that allows you to create your own electricity by simply walking around. Check it out.

Heiki and I raced to add new authors to the new Abroad Talk blog (I won... muahahahaha) and we also sent the blog announcement e-mail to Stacy West for her OK (which returned affirmative). We are now considering actually sending out the e-mail to the people who will write in said blog. This will be accomplished once Heiki overcomes his fear of "letting go". If you have ants in your kitchen, they are hungry or thirsty.

I grabbed the calligraphy box from the booth. It is on the table and ready to be picked up.

I also evaluated the ant issue in the room. After a short internet investigation, it is my opinion that the food is still good to eat as ants rarely carry disease, except sometimes in hospitals; and luckily the LLC, as a computer lab, is free of such inherent risk. These findings were verified by Ivo, who claimed that ants are well respected in Bulgaria, and many Bulgarian folktales actually discourage the killing of ants. I tend to trust cultural stories as many happen to be rooted in the truth. Please read this link if you would like further information regarding how to turn ant-problems into exotic pet-solutions.

Post Party Party

For all who missed the exciting after the party, party...I stayed with the final spanish translation group, who had a few final problems with their project, which were thankfully ironed out after a few hours. The group's DVD is burning on Computer A, and should be finished come morning. Will whoever is on shift take it out and maybe check to see if it works in the morning? The group should be coming in tomorrow morning to check it out and pick it up, but as their presentation is at 9:40 am, I just want to be sure. Thanks.

Lots of people in working, on papers, skype, facebook, you know. I finally cleaned The Room, and Amy did the dishes, both needed improvements. The flood is still outwitting various members of maintenance, but the waters have not yet seeped into the LLC, which has the potential for disaster as many of our computers are very near to the floor. But I believe we will prevail.

Water's rising

Beyond rising water levels in yonder classroom (not our "own" Walton 21, thank goodness, but the one to our other side) it was a pleasant shift. The rhythmic slosh of the growing pool next door was calming, if you will. Oh yeah, and a Spanish Trans group burned their DVD, which is now sitting on the table, awaiting pick up tomorrow morning.

Word on the flood. Apparently the ground water is flowing in at a rate equal to that at which it is being pumped out. Hopefully the situation will have improved come morning.

Monday Mid Morn

Jai, and two women are in working on papers, wikipedia, and other homework.
Natalia is having a rambunctious conversation with Gaetano over Skype.
The on-line conversation preparation seems to be going well. I am trying to use Handbrake to secure copies of episodes for the Spanish Trans. people.
Danielle was working on her Scrubs S.T. project, she was having some trouble using Audacity, the computer wasn't recognizing the lane encoder.
To fix this problem follow the steps in the extended entry...

To locate the lame encoder for Audacity

1. prompt the computer to look for lame_enc by attempting to export an audio file as mp3
2. When a box pops up asking you to locate lame_enc, browse for it under the C drive, program files, Audacity, Lame
3. Select lame_enc and click OK
4. Thats all. Oh, and if the file doesn't exist you will need to download it or ask WITS to download it for you.

Hopefully this won't be a problem as Lucia and I went through these steps on all the computers in the PIT lab, but if it is, you know what to do...

In the meantime, maybe it would be a good idea to link it temporarily to the old site as well. And yes, we should think of more ways to engage more readers. Any ideas would be welcome.

Also, Florence left her planner in the LLC and will be back to pick it up. It is sitting on the table. And Caroline reserved Walton 21for 9/27 from 7pm to 10pm. I put it in the calender.

Maria Blanco's Spanish Translation class came in for an orientation to Audacity and Abobe Premiere and stayed for the whole period. Sasha left to man the Styudy Abroad table, and reportable is doing an excellent job. Everything is well, by the way the Span. Translation students may be e-mailing the LLC list serve to make appointments to learn more. We will deal with that when it comes. Have a great day everybody.

Monday

Matt was in and re-imaged the left half of the lab. Natalia and I talked about the Spanish Translation class that will be coming in tomorrow at 9:40 and I helped Elizabeth copy and paste information from her e-mail.

Worked on the Language blogs...the blogs that are published look great. And for those of us who haven't posted yet, don't forget to do that by tomorrow! I'll send the links to the infamous Pam when all the blog are in.

Oh, and I put the pop bottles in the Room, so feel free to drink those up.

Thurs.

A colloquium class borrowed the lab for a library/research introduction, so Natalia and I met and discussed various things including writing the Spanish blog, the Spanish Translation project etc.

Kevin (one of the tech guys) also came in and replaced the problematic audio card on Computer O. He left a list of the Audigy Ports that should probably be filed away somewhere in case we ever need it. The new audio card apparently needed a different instillation disc (I’m not sure exactly what) but the point is that computer will now need to be imaged differently. Not something we need to worry too much about, but in case it ever comes up, now you know. In any event, the audio should be fixed.

Natalia-I found the Japanese placement test audio file on the Chinese CD. It is the wav. file labeled placementtest_a.wav and I put the CDs back in the cabinet.

Try to enjoy all those BBQs.

Kindra's Shift

I spent some time brainstorming ideas for the Spanish blog and then I hung out with Andy to tell him about the LLC capabilities/software and other things. Have a good weekend everyone.

Kindra's shift

So, the tech folk were in the LLC today fixing some software issues. For anyone who has been having trouble with any of the Adobe programs, the problem has been fixed on Computer A and will be fixed on the rest of the machines once we have had time to find more problems and we can fix them all in one big re-imaging sweep. So, with that, if anyone comes across anything else that needs to be fixed, please put it up on the blog and we should re-image at the end of this week.

Cool. What else… I am in the process of making name board things for those of us who don’t have them yet (i.e. Sasha and Andy) so if you two would kindly provide me with a high resolution picture of yourselves and a list of things that you are good at and would like to be formally recognized as knowing about, that would be wonderful.

Hey LLC,

It was a productive first shift. A Russian class came in for orientation and random lost freshman wandered about searching for the elusive Walton 21.

Also, a girl (Mercedes Mandich) came into with blackboard troubles. She apparently cannot access blackboard at all. I e-mailed Cheryl, but if anyone knows who is in charge of enrolling students into blackboard, please let me know.

Other than that, I think the "Spanish--language learning" link is wrong on the "New Resources" page on the LLC website. It takes you to a French page instead of a Spanish page. Not a big deal, but whoever is in charge of website maintenance should check that out if they get the chance.

Natalia and Rebekah left for Portland to get treats for the party.

-the german movie people came to watch their movie in the classroom.
-the french movie group met in the viewing room.

Tuesday

-Three of the Span 365 groups came in to work on projects. As of now, all 4 of the groups have been assigned their own external hard drives. They are all labled with the episode name. If any of these people come asking for their drives, you should first check the cardboard box in The Room. If the drive is not there, check the computer lab at the end of the hall (The PIT lab).
-Another note...we for some reason only have three USB cords for these four external drives. This means that the groups will need to share. Please make sure the drives have a USB cord before you give it to the groups. Thanks!
-Kei--just a heads up...your buddy group came in today and they might be contacting you soon for some more help.

Friday afternoon

--Tee--Natalia and I found out how to watch and record the news at the same time. You literally just come in while the news is recording and push the power button on the TV. This will bring up channel 14 on the TV and the recording will proceed. I think we should tell Prof. G.R. to not touch anything other than the TV power button and the volume.

--Hristo, I think this only concerns you and me...
German News: a new development. The professor wanting the German news recorded came in with clarifying directions. Because he wants the daily news (but only Monday –Thursday) for his own educational purposes, and not for assigning to a class, he would prefer if all news segments were recorded on one tape. Also, he would like to keep the tapes for a week at a time. For these reasons, I think it would be best if we assign two tapes for this project--one for the first week and one to be used the following week when he will have the first tape in his possession.
In any event, each week, one should use one tape for all news segments. I suppose we should also be extra careful not to rewind and allow any rerecording. The professor will pick up the tape Friday afternoons.

-Finally, the tape to record the Saturday soccer game is in the VCR and ready to go. I labeled the tape “Soccer!” I think that Jessa will have Amy let her in to obtain this tape.

I took out the French news for today and put in the tape for tomorrow,
however, today's new didn't record properly. The visual is very fuzzy and kind of unwatchable. The picture on the TV in the booth is also fuzzy, and won't respond to the manual adjustment. Also, we checked online, and there the picture is fine. Does anybody know what is going on?
