Olga's 4-6
Talked with Natalia about the Spanish dubbing project and the issues with using iMocie on macs. The version of iMovie that we have on the macs in LLC turned out to be a different program, not the one installed on the other computers. So, the software called iMovie on our macs is a different software, and I couldn't figure out how to work with it. What people will need if they want to work on a mac is calles "iMovie HD", and this is the software used by one of the groups for dubbing for the Spanish class.
Natalia showed me this tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV-JXgN8UOM
and it works well for iMovie HD. So if people have any issues, just give them the link.
LLC is full of people. Pablo and Alejandra are here, Pascal is tutoring, one person was using rosetta and several people are using PCs.

Olga's 2-5
Natalia hosted 2 Spanish classes for Wordchamp presentation. We discussed that most (if not all) of us should be able to present this information. I uploaded the draft of the document on Google docs. It's basically a detailed plan I put together during one of Natalia's presentation, reflecting the most important points that should be covered.
The computer next to the conditioner was not working (we couldn't turn it on).

Olga's shift
For about an hour taught a guy how to speak and write some Russian words. Maybe I should become a tutor? :). Also showed him how he can use WordChamp if he wants to learn to say more and said here are a bunch of Russian people around, so he can come and ask for help whenever he needs it
Couldn't find Roseta Russian CD part 1. Does anyone know where it can be? Tried other Rosetta CDs but they don't work. Can anyone check why they wouldn't work? I couldn't figure it out.
Will work on my WordChamp profile. Just want to have samples of what you can do with it to show to people if they are interested.

Olga Google Maps
Here is the information regarding the google.maps project I was working for a German presentation. I basically created a presentation-tour for Cologne and a short presentation for it. It was a great possibility to talk about several interesting places to visit in this city and was great for learning.
Here's what you need to do to create a presentation in google maps:
Login to your google account, and chose "maps" menu on the top, then go to Help menu in the upper right corner. Then go to Learn More ->My Maps -> What is my maps and how do I use it. When you do it, it should lead you to a tutorial video, which is really comprehensive.
For this specific project I searched for interesting places to visit in Cologne, and then opened Google Maps, chose the tab My maps, created a new map and used the tools in the upper left corner of the map to locate these places and denote directions from one place to another. When you are working on creating the map, you will see "More..." menu in the upper left corner of the map, you can use it to see photos, youtube items and wikipedia articles relevant to this place.
Generally, the whole process is not difficult, it just takes some time to familiarize with the tools necessary to build the map.

Olga's Shift 7-9pm
The two guys who came yesterday came again. They said that Natalia told them that they both of them can use Rosetta Stone at the same time. Vlad was here, and we together couldn't find the option for 2 people to use it t the same time. Is there any?
They are interested in studying together, at the same time, so as we have only one Rosetta CD, maybe it could be possible to create a virtual disk on one of the computers so that they can tun the program simultaneously.
Other than that the guys were working ok. The girl was using Rosetta, and I proposed Tell Me More to the guy and it went fine.
Found broken headphones. Placed them under the conditioner.
Oh, and I found the key :) It was on its place by the door, was a nice joke to place it there.
Other than that, Irina came to work with her files. Some people were there in the beginning of the shift, but they all left by 7.15

Tuesday 7-9 pm PLEASE READ THIS
2 guys came to use Rosetta Stone, but it is not working. After inserting the CD it shows the first window, and after I press "run" it says that I should "log with administrative privileges and try later". The same message appeared when I tried to run Rosetta files on the computer (the one under the mirror). I heard from someone that there was a problem with Rosetta earlier, but couldn't find anything related in the blog.
If you know how to fix the problem, please, e-mail Travis Lee
Found a Rosetta Latin CD in one of the computers, placed it where it's supposed to be.

Sunday 7-11
Both Spanish groups I'k working with came today. Group 1 continued dubbing. They are ok with the Movie Maker now and don't need any assistance.
Group 2 tried to burn the movie and the Spanish version. Adobe Premiere Elements doesn't work (we're having too much trouble with it, don't think it's worth using it in future). The problem is that when they they used Premiere Elements to cut the original Spanish file (which was 300mb in size) and exported the movie, they dot a 4.7GB .avi file (which is weird, they didn't add anything, just cut it). Of course, we couldn't record it on H drive or on the DVD-R because it was too big. Even more, we couldn't record it on the hard drive (although there was 361 GB of free space, it said that there is not enough space).
Does anyone know what's wrong with the file? If we can't figure anything out, they will cut the movie again using Movie Maker, yet, it could be great to help them.
If you know what to do: the file named Group2Cut-undub.prel located on the desktop of the last computer on the left (next to the Mac) is the project file. They exported it, the file is named Group2Cut-Undub.avi . they need to record it using ANY device so that they can bring it to class for presentation.

Monday 6-9
On Sunday the girls had problems with the dubbing. They first closed the program without exporting the movie, and then tried to open it again. It was not working, we could hear no sound. As Howie and I figured out, the problem was that the PC was generally not playing the sound. We moved the video to another PC, and it was ok. But the girls had enough stress.
They are coming again tomorrow during my shift. Natalia, can we close the lab at 7.30 pm so that they can finish recording?
Today checked the PC and the Movie Maker. Everything great.
Few people were here during my shift.

Movie Maker
There were some problems with the dubbing voice using Adobe Premiere Elements. The voice was interrupting when played in Premiere Elements.
The better way to dub the voice is using the Movie Maker program. I tried it and it works much better. Here's how you can do it:
Dubbing in Movie Maker
1. Start Movie Maker from the Start Menu, then go to Program>Accessories>Entertainment>Movie Maker
2. Import the movie you want to dub over (File > Capture Video)
3. Drag the movie down on to the timeline (the movie will appear divided into scenes, so just select all of them and drag down to the timeline)
4. If you want to completely silence the sound of the video click on the small Volume icon on the left hand-side, just above the Timeline, and the drag the slider to Audio/Music
5. Go to Tools > Narrate Timeline
6. Then select the time where you want to start the narration at by moving the Time slider on the exact moment in the movie
7. Click on Start Narration
8. Then when you are done with the narration, save the .wmv file where you want it to be.
9. When you are ready with editing your movie click on Finish Movie and save the file in the desired format. You can save the movie by going to File > Save Movie File.

A wonderful morning with Skype. Tried to fix the translation fro French conference. The program showed not our video, but a TV program. This happens when you try to open Skype on some conputers. So, just change the Skype video settings. And in order to have sound just check that everything that has to be plugged in is actually plugged in and reboot the computer.Besides that, we also had problems with the Skype audio settings. Fixed everything, hope students enjoy the conference.

Yestesday Indira showed the movie, 4 people came to LLC to study.
Today Jing brought 5 students to study. One of the students had problems with WISE: When she tried to open the file "CHINESE AUDIO 1st YEAR" (it's right in the folder Resources in course "CHINESE 131 01 08"). It said "Resource is not found". Jing said 3 students could not have access to it, others could, though.
Does anyone know what the problem might be? Please, tell Jing, if you find out. For now students are ok without the access to this file, but they may need it.

Olga 6-9 shift
Here is the tutorial for tomorrow's Spanish class. I didn't change much from what Howie write, as it was already work of art, and pretty comprehensive. Here it is.
Make sure the computer is on the following settings in the Control Panel: audio playback and audio recording should be set to the USB headsets, not USB device
1. Import the video file following these steps (FILES -->GET MEDIA FROM-->FILES AND FOLDERS). The video is located on Desktop in a separate folder.
2. Drag the video clip to the timeline
3. In order to cut clip, select the place you want to cut on the timeline and click the scissors icon to the right of the play menu
4. Turn off the sound on the clip
• right click on the clip in the timeline, and select Show Properties
• select Volume from the menu on the right
• drag the clip volume to zero
5. Also turn off the sound on the sound bar under the monitor
6. Play and pause the video clip to the scene where you want to dub your voice
7. Click on "Add narration" button on the right
8. Make sure "Mute audio while recording" is checked
9. Click on the Record button on the "Narration" menu
10. Wait till it says "Start Recording 1 --> Recording..." and start dubing your voice
11. After you're done dubing the video clip, exporting the new video clip by going to FILES -->EXPORT -->MOVIE
12. Save the file in AVI type
13. Burn the AVI file into DVD using POWER2GO EXPRESS
As for the shift overall, I finished recording the files on the PCs, looked through the program again. 1 student came to prepare to the tomorrow's Spanish class. Simon came, was tutoring 2 students. A couple more people came to use skype and to study.
