Vic Tues 3-5

Howie and Eri were here as well as Simon. I took a couple pictures to keep the LLC fresh in my mind post-graduation~

Checked the Cultural Events blog to see if there was an entry regarding the Okinawan workshop being put on by the JSSL. There was not, unfortunately, but I hope that this information can be updated next fall by whomever happens to be working here. It is difficult sometimes to hear about events from the JSSL since we aren't an ASWU-recognized student organization. I look forward to hearing about more cooperation between the LLC and JSSL in the coming years~

Cool music video from French up-and-coming artist Yelle:

Vic's Monday 3-5

Simon and Jose were chillin' when I showed up a little early today. Kelsey was on the computer but I didn't really talk to her that much. Amadou made his normal visit, but I guess Natalia was sick! I hope you feel better today, Natalia~

Practiced Japanese by watching some videos on YouTube. There are a lot of great resources (like tv programs and whatnot) to really help people get on with their abilities. I wish teachers would utilize these fun resources more often~

I hope everyone had an awesome time at the luncheon. I know I sure did. It was nice to break bread together, so to speak~

Vic Tue 5-7 shift

Walked in to see Howie, Eri, Natalia, and Kelsey hanging out~

Talked with Eri and everyone about the LLC luncheon we're having this Sunday (I believe). We're going to India Palace, a delicious place in my opinion, so I'm excited, myself~

Everyone remember that we're gonna meet at the LLC this Sunday, 11:30am for lunch~

Recently I've been watching this Japanese animation (anime) called Neon Genesis Evangelion. Released in 1995, it's heralded by many as the greatest anime of all time. If you want to give it a try, you can watch the whole thing on YouTube:

Walked in to see Jessa in here. She sassed me for almost an hour~

Looked up some sweet K-pop videos, thinking about where I'll see myself in the future. Korea? Japan? I don't know anymore~

International party is soon! The club I'm in, JSSL is already excited about it! It should be awesome~

This is a video from the Korean group SS501. It came out last year, but I still think it's catchy~

Vic's Wed 5-7 shift

Everyone seems so busy lately! Jose and Simon were working on the video, and Amadou came in later to help them. Kelsey was chillin' for a while before she had work, and Natalia graced us with her presence for bit, too~

Since I have done a lot of work with WordChamp in the past, I think it is only fitting that I think of ways to help Eri tell other TIUA students about its awesomeness. I think showing the the webreader toolbar will be a handy way to get their attention~

Jose has to finish his video by Friday!!!!!!! He might be stressing out, so be extra nice to him~

I've found a really cool opportunity to study abroad in Korea and get paid while doing it! And, I can do it after I graduate! I wasn't really keen on going back to South Korea before heading over to Japan, but I would totally do it with this program~

Came in early today to work on my thesis. Zan's been here doing a video project, and Simon and Jose were here chillin' earlier. Talked with Eri for a bit about how things are going for her. Natalia and Kelsey were in the back. Jing was tutoring for an hour, too~

Checked around on some forums for info regarding Japanese study, but no bites. Tried to help Zan with screen capture~

Apparently the program Powere-DVD can screen capture with the "c" button~

Vic's Mon 3-5 shift

Came in and was instantly attacked by Natalia as per stealing Kelsey's computer away from her. That was not the case, by any means, but it was interesting to see Natalia so protective~

Simon was here with some tutors, and Jose and Amadou came in and out. Jing was tutoring, too. Oh, yeah, my friend Whit came with me, too~

As far as blog writing goes, if I have to keep to this format everyone else should, too. Get your crap together, people! Even my sweet blogs with youtube trailers and stuff are more awesome than your 2 lines of bs~

On a cultural note, there are a couple great tools for independent Japanese character study called mnemosyne and anki. They're both free and awesome. Also, you can buy tasty cheap Korean booze at the local liquor store for about $4 for 650 mL. It's called soju, and it's awesome.

The movie that won Best Foreign Film in the Academy Awards is coming to America soon! The Japanese film Departures is an amazing story about a cellist that finds himself becoming an encoffiner after his orchestra is prematurely disbanded. I recently read this short story for class called "Moonlight Shadow" by the Japanese author Yoshimoto Banana. She's one of the few female authors from Japan that has received critical praise, and it was a very moving story. Inspired by the 80's song of the same name, it's about a young woman who lost her lover of four years in a car crash and can't move on. If you have the time, check it out!

Victor's Mon 3-5 shift~

This past Saturday was the First Annual Sakura Matsuri put on by yours truly and the good folks over at the Japanese Studies Student Leaders. It was a truly amazing experience that brought together the support of various campus organizations and the Japanese Studies department to put on a free event that showcased just what a Japanese festival has to offer. Special thanks to all those who attended, and to everyone else, I hope to hear that you make it next year!
~
That being said, the event was a festival that allowed various organizations to set up booths to inform people about things and also to entertain them. For example, JASO (an organization that promotes Japanese cultural awareness with scholarships and their own festivals) came and set-up a tent. Considering the amazing turnout that we had this year, we will be sure to have a much more incredible event next year and we will be looking for more people to get onboard and support the cause. I think the LLC would be an excellent addition to the line-up, and you guys could set up an info booth manned by some TA’s who could teach some cool foreign phrases to people or something awesome. I will write that in the notes for the festival for next time.

Victor's Wed 5-7pm Shift

Spent the first half of my shift creating a teacher's account on WordChamp and setting up a class. Not too difficult, really, but I was a little confused by the language associated with using a YouTube video for homework. You don't actually post the entire html code, just the part that follows the "=", something to be wary of. However, I think I did a good job of creating a mock HW assignment involving translation of some song lyrics. If only I had some students...

Victor's Tuesday 5-7pm shift

Talked with Natalia about writing insightful blog entries. It is with that thought in mind that I try a new style of entry~~
I took the time to think about how to go over the WWorld News process with Eri, our new TIUA intern. In my opinion, it is best to go over the information with her as follows:

Explain how it is a place for international students and Willamette students from America to discuss different customs and traditions around the world. Essentially, it is where people can discuss how the same event or holiday is viewed comparatively around the world. Also, it is an excellent place to post world events of particular importance to share that information with the Willamette community.
Then, after discussing the overall significance of the awesome phenomenon that is WWN, she can look at what it has become today. Show her the archives, starting with entries from Chinese and Japanese representatives, something she can relate to. Explain how the blog process works by logging in with your WU id (so easy, really) and walk her through it.
After talking to her about it, she should be encouraged to start doing her own posts. I'm sure she will have her own insights on any particular number of events happening in her home country or how things relate here at WU, and if she thinks it's cool enough we can get her to encourage a few more from the TIUA crowd to get in on this (the ultimate goal) and we can spread WWN's popularity even further!
~~
Also, in response to Kelsey's earlier post, I look to my department (Japanese, Chinese, Asian Studies) as well as TIUA and my club the JSSL for good material worth advertising in the Events blog.

Natalia and I spent the afternoon working on incorporating new scheduling options and other features into the language assistants' spaces. By adding the "Sign-Up" tab into the browser you can add any events, like tutoring sessions, language tables, and extra-curriculars, and even have a sign-up checkable by the LA's themselves. You can add them manually to their own "Space" and then they can use the set-up as much as they want. I've already added the German, French and Japanese LA to their own "Space".
