China’s figure skating couple Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo finally realized their Olympic dream, dancing to gold in the figure skating with a nearly flawless routine. The husband and wife team came out of retirement in quest of Olympic glory with a performance worthy of 18 years’ hard work together. Meanwhile, another Chinese duo Pang Qing and Tong Jian claimed silver to complete a 1-2 finish for China.
After finishing at the top in the short program, Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo looked confident to start their free skating routine. Under the song of “Adagio,” by Italian composer Albinon Tommaso, the three-time world champions put on a breathtaking performance.
The couple opened their account with high-flying triple toe-loops to wow the crowd. And later there was only a tiny mistake when Zhao put down Shen from air to ice after finishing a one-hand hoist. After that, the pair completed the rest of their routine in perfect fashion. Those lucky souls in the arena witnessed Zhao sending his wife into orbit as they performed a back-to-back throw triple loop and throw triple salchow. Shen landed each of the jumps with such precision it seemed as if she was performing on a metal surface with magnets attached to her blades dragging her down to the surface.
Eventually, they accomplished as high as 139.91 points in free skating, plus 76.66 in the short program, they scored a record total of 216.57 points to win the gold medal.
Zhao Hongbo said, “I’m so happy. It’s a like a dream. Actually, I felt big pressure before the competition because it’s has been many, many years. We were desperate to realize this dream. But today even if there was an error, it generally didn’t affect our overall performance. ”
Shen Xue said, “We made our return last year for today, for our dream. Whatever difficulty we met, we finally made it come true. I felt very happy.”
