The current Japanese prime minister is Naoto Kan who belongs to the Democratic party of Japan. We had a big change last year when the political party in office was changed from Liberal Democratic party to the Democratic party.
As you may know, the Japanese prime minister has changed many times over the past several years. I know that it is not good even for other countries, because we are in the global world. I hope that it will never happen again. It would mean that the Japanese government works well.
The Japanese government system is based on a “parliamentary cabinet system” and, as in many democratic countries, is composed of three branches.
-a legislative branch
-an administrative branch
-a judiciary branch
The powers of these branches are independent. But the legislative branch and the administrative branch are very close, because most Ministers are chosen by the prime minister.
The political parties which have a seat in the Diet are 13 parties and nonpartisan. And there are more parties which do not have a seat in the Diet. The number of parties has doubled compared to 1996.
The Diet of Japan is made up of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors. The House of Representatives represents the people’s opinions. And the House of Councilors is there to check the power and judgment of the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives has more power than the House of Councilors. Both Houses have their own elections.
In Japan, suffrage is granted at twenty years of age. When an election campaign starts, the candidates have an election campaign, like stump oratory, and are using election cars in their election district. We have had many elections in the past several years.
Anyway, in my opinion, Japanese young people don’t discuss the elections very often. I don’t know why exactly. Japanese people tend to avoid these topics like politics (which party do we support) and religion.
