The Trend to Go Green

ILKA.jpg

The German political party that has its main interest in environmental policy is called „Bündnis 90/Die Grünen“. The central idea of their policy is ecological, economical and social sustainability. The party „Die Grünen“  was founded in the 1980s and has its origins in the anti-nuclear power, ecology, peace and women’s movement of the 1970s. In 1993 the party „Die Grünen“ was joined by the „Bündnis 90“ party. Chairman and chairwoman of the party are Cem Özdemir and Claudia Roth.

This year has been a big success for the green party in Germany. After the nuclear catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan, the ruling Conservative party (CDU) lead by chancellor Angela Merkel had to abandon its energy policy. Originally de-nuclearization was the main matter of interest of the green party and the conservative party used to postpone the abandoning of it. In many cities German citizens demonstrated against the continuation of nuclear power stations. „Energiewende“; (Turn of energy policy) is a term that is discussed a lot within public life in these days.  Since the tragic events in Fukoshima, the Germans urgent will to the federal government decided the final nuclear phase-out until the year 2022. Compared to the use of 17 nuclear power stations in the year 2010 at the end of July, this year the number of nuclear power stations that are used has been reduced to 9. Concerning energy supplies Germany is on a more green-energy course now.

Today more than 20 % of the energy supplies are covered by renewable energies. The most important resources for eco-electricity are windpower (7,5 %), biomass (5,6%) and solar energy (3,5%). The green party aims to gain power supplies fully from windpower, solar energy, water power, biomass and geothermal heat.

Supporting the green party and their policy has become more and more popular. This year the green party is active as a coalition partner in five federal states. For the first time the former conservative federal state Baden-Württemberg has voted a green Minister-president (Winfried Kretschmann).

In the traffic sector the greens want to implement climate protection strategies. The CO2 –emission shall be reduced and renewable energies in the traffic sector (biofuel and eco-electricity) shall be increased and be fully implemented by the year 2040.

Another aspect that helps to save the environment is the recycling system that we have. The recycling initiative “The Green Dot” has been very successful in reducing garbage. Manufacturers and retailers have to pay for a “Green Dot” on products: the more packaging there is, the higher the fee. This system has led to less paper, thinner glass and less metal being used, thus creating less garbage to be recycled. In order to recycle plastic and glass bottles and cans a deposit system ensures that those bottles and cans are returned at the right place to get recycled.
