Hi everyone! My name is Gabriela Bustos and I’m the Language Assistant for the Spanish department. I was chosen by the Spanish department [editors note] to help students with their homework, assignments and conversations in Spanish at Willamette University. In this first entry for the WWN blog I’d like to tell you something about my country, how I arrived to the US and my role at WU.

I come from Argentina, one of the most beautiful and extensive countries in South America. It has a population of about 40 million of inhabitants and it is divided into 23 provinces and the autonomous city of Buenos Aires, capital of the country and seat of the federal government. Argentina is usually known for its fantastic food, its cultural traditions and its popular soccer players such as Messi and Mascherano. However, it has many attractions more such as its landscapes, its music and most important its people, so it will be difficult to show you everything in 8 months. I hope sometime you have the opportunity to visit my country!

What do you do when you want to study abroad? Well, your answers may be different in some cases but in general you just buy a ticket, pack your luggage and go. For me it wasn’t that easy. It was the result of a long and hard application for the Fulbright Program for teachers of English. I started my application in September, 2011, and I only learned I was coming to Salem one day after my birthday on June 4^th, 2012! Can you believe it? Well, it was shocking, and I was so excited that I didn’t even realize that my life was about to change completely. In Argentina, I work as English teacher with students of different levels and ages. I love teaching and I enjoy very much talking to my students and listening to their funny stories, but my favorite thing about teaching is that I can share what I know and in turn I receive my students’ love and affection.

My job at Willamette is a bit different because I’m not teaching a class; I just assist students and teachers according to their needs. Another function for me is to share my culture with Willamette students so for this reason, I host the Spanish table on Tuesdays from 12 to 1. The Spanish club is also in process of organization, which means that in the next days there will be movie and cooking nights, parties, games and coffee evenings at Bistro.

All in all, I would like to welcome you to the World Languages Studio. You should definitely take advantage of all the resources available for your learning of different languages. It is an awesome opportunity to make friends not only from Argentina but from all over the world!

Fui elegida por el profesor Uggen para ayudar a los estudiantes con sus tareas, sus trabajos y conversaciones en español en la Universidad de Willamette. En esta primera entrada del blog WWN me gustaría contarles algo sobre mi país, cómo llegué a los EE.UU. y mi papel en WU.
Vengo de Argentina, uno de los países más bellos y extensos de América del Sur. Tiene una población de aproximadamente 40 millones de habitantes y está dividida en 23 provincias y la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, capital del país y sede del gobierno federal. Argentina es generalmente conocida por su fantástica comida, sus tradiciones culturales y sus futbolistas populares como Messi y Mascherano. Sin embargo, tiene muchos más atractivos como sus paisajes, su música y lo más importante su gente, por lo que será difícil que le muestre todo en 8 meses. Espero que en algún momento tengan la oportunidad de visitar mi país!
¿Qué haces cuando quieres estudiar en el extranjero? Bueno, las respuestas pueden ser diferentes en algunos casos, pero en general, compras un boleto, empacas tu equipaje y te vas. Para mí no fue tan fácil. Fue el resultado de una larga y difícil aplicación del Programa Fulbright para profesores de Inglés. Empecé mi solicitud en septiembre de 2011, y que sólo supe que iba a venir a Salem, un día después de mi cumpleaños el 4 de junio de 2012! ¿Puedes creerlo? Bueno, fue impactante, y yo estaba tan emocionada que ni siquiera me dí cuenta de que mi vida iba a cambiar por completo. En la Argentina, trabajo como profesora de Inglés con estudiantes de diferentes niveles y edades. Me encanta enseñar y disfruto mucho hablando con mis alumnos y escuchando sus historias divertidas, pero lo que más me gusta de enseñar es que puedo compartir lo que sé y, a cambio recibo el amor y afecto de mis alumnos.
Mi trabajo en Willamette es un poco diferente porque no estoy enfrente de una clase, sólo ayudo a los estudiantes y profesores de acuerdo a sus necesidades. Otra de las funciones es para mí compartir mi cultura con estudiantes Willamette por esta razón, dirijo la mesa española los martes de 12 a 1. El club español también está en proceso de organización, lo que significa que en los próximos días habrá noches de cine,cocinar, fiestas, juegos y noches de café en Bistro.
Para concluir, me gustaría darles la bienvenida al World Languages Studio. Definitivamente, deberías aprovechar todos los recursos disponibles para el aprendizaje de idiomas. Es una oportunidad increíble para hacer amigos, no sólo de Argentina sino de todo el mundo!
