Fashion Culture of Japan

By Shotaro Kumano

Fashion is very important for Japan because it is one of the best ways for Japanese people to express themselves. Fashion trends change in an instant every year and Japanese people are very attuned to it. College students, especially, focus on fashion.

In Japan, students who are in elementary school or high school have to wear uniforms that are decided by the school. And, if we get a job, we basically have to wear suits. Therefore, college is the only chance to wear whatever we want in daily life. College students always buy fashion magazine, window-shop, and watch fashion TV shows.

Japanese fashion can be seen as a mixture of all European, American, and traditional styles. If you walk around in Tokyo or any metropolis area in Japan, you can see some splendid fashion.

As I said before, college student mix American style. I don’t even know what American style is, but we just use our imagination to try to get as close to it as possible. We can say same thing even for ASP (American Studies Program) students. (Learn more about ASP http://www.tiua.edu/!) ASP students from every year are inspired by American fashion. They express their own style with inspiration of American images.
