German Minister of Defense resigned because of plagiarism in his thesis

Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg, Minister of Defense since 2009, resigned this week after long discussions about his doctoral thesis. Guttenberg was accused of plagiarism in his thesis about the development of constitutions in the United States of America and the European Union that he conducted in 2006, only five years ago. At this point he was a member of the Deutscher Bundestag. German politicians, the media, and the German citizens were arguing about whether or not this questions is reliability and credibility. On Tuesday, March 1st 2011, Guttenberg finally resigned. The new Minister of Defense is Thomas de Maizière. He used to be Minister of the Interior and this job will now be done by Hans-Peter Friedrich.

Fun Fact: Guttenberg comes from an aristocratic family and his full name is Karl Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg.

His wife is Stephanie Gräfin von Bismarck-Schönhausen, a great-great-granddaughter of the first Chancellor of Germany Otto von Bismarck.
