Japan Studies Student Leaders’
First Annual Sakura Matsuri
(Cherry Blossom Festival)
Noon – 5:00 pm
Saturday April 4, 2009
Our First Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) will bring the Japanese and Willamette Communities together to celebrate the coming of spring with cherry blossom viewing. Our club, JSSL (Japan Studies Student Leaders) consists of Willamette and TIUA students who love Japan and Japanese Culture.
We will bring a cultural approach to the sharing and expanding of dance, food and songs from the traditions of cherry blossom appreciation. JSSL hopes to provide an event that involves the Willamette Community and people in Salem, and provides a better understanding of Japanese Culture.
Karaoke and Taiko Game contests will be held, and will be open to those in attendance. Sakura Matsuri also will feature live entertainment. “Takohachi,” the Taiko group from Portland will be performing powerful Japanese drum music, and also show Okinawan dance. In addition, a lively Shamisen piece will light up the festival. A high energy dance, Soranbushi, will be performed by JSSL. From the Willamette community, the martial arts club, and the Japanese a cappella group “Green Tree” will come on the stage. You don’t want to miss them!
Besides live entertainment over 10 sponsors will display traditional Japanese crafts and artwork, and there will be free samples of traditional Japanese food. Make sure to come by anytime between noon and 5pm. See you there!
