Congratulations, JSSL members, on making our club one of the best on campus!

Last week at the Campus Life Honors and Awards Ceremony, Japan Studies Student Leaders was presented a certificate that honored us as the Outstanding Student Organization of the year.

This award recognizes the dedication and hard work of the past and present members of our club and the marvelous Executive Boards JSSL has had.

As our school year comes to a close, I would like to thank you for the countless hours of work and support you have put into this club to make it as successful as it is today.

Have a wonderful summer and I will see you again in the Fall!

Students do presentation about what they research in on their thesis. these written below are their research. Have a look at it!

7. Examining representations of Sakamoto Ryoma by Garcia Maritza

8. Play Ball! A review of Japanese Baseball and Society by Mow, Chelsie Ann

9. HIV/AIDS in Japan: Translation and Commentary on Minato Kanae’s Confessions by Brigham, Ellen

10. Konkatsu and Marriage Decline in Japan by Wu, Jenna

11. Translation and Commentary on Otsuka Eiji’s A theory of Narrative consumption by Bergevin, Robert

12. My light novel can’t be this postmodern!: Translation and commentary on Hiroki Azuma’s the birth of Game-esque Realism by French Kathleen

They were doing best at that time to explain their research. After all presentations, we had Sumi-e workshop. Sumi-e is monochromatic ink painting. You can understand obviously what Sumi-e is as you see below pictures.

We had many fun booths like calligraphy, Origami and game also had a lot of amazing performances like Taiko, Sanshin, Karaoke contest and Dance of Soran-Bushi.

I am planning to show movies to students taking Japanese or  interested in Japan on March 2nd and 9th from 6:30 to 9pm at Kaneko Auditorium.
What kind of  the image of the Japanese do you have? You think that we are polite, quite or hard-working, right?
These movies will change the image you have of the Japanese so far especially of Japanese women and men.
I will show “ the Idiot” on March 2nd. This title in Japanese is Hakuchi (白痴) and it was directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1951.

This story is about a Japanese veteran, driven partially mad because of the war. He travels to the snowy island of Kameda where he soon enters in a love triangle with his best friend and a disgraced woman.
On March 9th I will show “Love strikes” or in  Japanese,  Moteki (モテキ).

This movie was released for the first time 2 years ago. It represents the behavior of the present young generation of Japanese people.
The movies I will show you are totally different. You will realize that Japanese love style changes a lot between  the past and the present as you watch them.

We had a good time at Goudy Gustav Hines Room (the side room to the left of the forks and napkins).

We have language table every Wednesday from 5:30 to 7pm at same place.

If you want to make new friends, you can do it easily. If you want to practice Japanese or English, This time is the best for you. We are looking forward to see you next time!
